You can beat The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild without finishing the story

Speed runs are gonna be dope in this game

OoT any% was this long evolution of glitches and strats steadily streamlined into the ridiculously skilled runs you see today that manipulates the way the engine works and even things like forcing incorrect load points. It would be great if the same thing was possible in BotW, however I get the impression speedrunning in this game will be a lot more organic. For example, if the final boss was too hard even for speedrunners to do from the start, and they were forced to find the most efficient route in a world as vast and open as BotW to get buff items in order to feasibly beat any%. Then again, never count the speedrunning community out. I'm sure they'll find some crazy stuff! I wonder if it would get patched these days though!

since a stat system is in plce this tiime, you might be able to reach the endboss immediately, but your gear will be nowhere near enough and you'll need to fight him for 6 straight ours without getting hit once or something like that

Sounds amazing, but I don't really understand. You'd think the main story is why Link woke up and yadda yadda, so I assumed the final boss is tied to that quest? I guess not... Still, if I have to choose between all the freedom or none at all, obviously it's the former.

So I can play Link as Doom Slayer in this, doesn't give a damn about the ongoing narrative, go wreck some shit. I can dig it.

I hope the game provides some sort of secret depending on how players approach him.
Presumably you get a unique ending or scene if he's fought with the Master Sword.

Holy mother of fuck. This game is everything I've ever wanted in any game, let alone Zelda. I thought Aonuma was crazy with such mad ambitions, but it seems like he's done it. The crazy motherfucker. Game of the generation. I watched all of the Zelda footage today, like 5 hours of it, and didn't get bored. Also I have an exam tomorrow lol. Still #worth.

Honestly I don't like this. A game should at least guide player's experience in some way. I usually don't know what to do and quit when given too many options in games.

From what we've seen, the game is pretty clear at guiding you along the main questline. You just have the option to completely ignore it and do your own thang.

That's really cool but allowing the player to go to the final boss straight away probably means that the world is chronologically static from a narrative perspective. Not that I have a problem with that, it's certainty better than arbitrary gating.

Interesting, which makes me wonder how they are going to tackle dungeons as I didn't really enjoy how they did them in Link Between Worlds as the puzzles just amounted to use said item to get in and wall merge.

I am a bit worried about that 4 dungeons rumour that is floating around and I am just waiting for Nintendo to come out and kill it.

If hasn't been discussed, but in the stream thread I speculated that the big dungeons gave you legendary weapons, eg. Master Sword, Bow of Light, Mirror Shield, Hero's Garb, which would be top tier equipment and unbreakable.

They would be major power-ups in a game with weapon degradation, but wouldn't interfere with people who want to skip them all together.

I'm so excited for this game.

They kinda did something that with Link Between World with the Hero's tunics and Hylian Shield so you could be on to something there.

And the first shitty rusty sword you find (and apparently can break!) is the Master Sword.[/SPOILER]

That is not the Master Sword.

Did they? I didn't catch that on the stream, on the contrary, they said they didn't want to talk about the story yet.

They showed Koroks in the stream and they only appeared in Windwaker timeline.

I'm no expert in Zelda lore, but in that case shouldn't Hyrule be flooded?

After the event of Windwaker Link and Zelda both set off to find a new land, which they did and named it Hyrule.

Ganondorf however wasn't exactly killed but merely stabbed in the head with the Master Sword causing him to turn to stone and was flooded to the bottom of the sea with the Master Sword still attracted.

So I suspect that either someone dived to the bottom and removed the sword or the sword power grew weaker over time and he broke out.

Im more curios on how complete the game is in development then, are they really sitting on a complete game just for NX release?

Wonder if it'll be like Wario Land and your ending slightly differs depending on completion rate.

So basically 20 minutes after the game is released there will be a video on YouTube of someone beating the game.

Probably not. Aside from the fact that you'll likely at least need the paraglider to get off the plateau (which means you do need to beat the four shrines from the demo), speed runs like that will require extensive familiarity with the game

My guess is the end boss probably has a bunch of health and if you tried taking him on right away it would be a battle of endurance and patience and would take a long time to whittle his health down since you are underpowered and undergeared.

Not at all. The game could definitely have multiple endings, and have the world change as you do things. Nothing's stopping it.

you'd probably break all of your weapons before you beat the boss

The Bokoblins had like 13 HP, the Guardian had around 500 HP I think? I can only imagine how much Calamity Ganon might have.

Either you get stomped on the spot, or if you do beat him, it'll take a shitton of time. I also imagine that progressing through dungeons and shrines is what allows civilization to return to Hyrule, and I'd really like to see that. That'd be very rewarding.

Actually, that part about it being under the sea for a while is a good point. The master sword is shown to be awfully rusty in the trailer and logo lol.

With 100+ shrines, I think more than 4-5 dungeons is overkill for me honestly. Those who love dungeon puzzles will probably get their fill from the 100+ shrines to explore, and those who don't care for dungeons as much in Zelda (like me) will have the option to ignore some of the shrines and not have to grind through 8-10 dungeons.

If there are in fact 4 dungeons in the game, I find that to be a fair compromise between those who like dungeons (you have the shrines still) and those who don't care (I can probably ignore most shrines).

This is the Zelda game I've been wanting all my life. This one seems so much larger in scope and ambitious than all previous entries. I've honestly never been this excited for a Zelda game before.

I had a feeling they might let us fight Ganon right off the bat.

I love this idea. Complete freedom. Link isn't forced to go to every temple and get every item. He does it because he wants to prepare and get stronger.

<3333 Nintendo this is great!

It will be interesting to see if you can actually beat it faster by finding certain items/weapons first and then heading to the boss.

Dunno about this, I like the idea of progressing through the fixed story and having to power up Link before taking on Ganon in the older games. Guess it's time for something new though.

I was very skeptical about a Nintendo open world. But it seems that they've crafted a huge world that you can interact with in a way that was only in my kid's age dreams. Climb, sail, bombs, go wherever you want, jump from your horse and use the wind caused by a fire to aim the eye of a massive techno-guardian and shoot your explosive arrow. They did it right? This game is gonna be so close to perfection. I guess this kind of experiences are the reason why we all love gaming here.

Can you just let me get this Zelda 1 re-imagining instead of OoT 209848th please.

WHAT IS

No forced tutorial?!

(that I know of)

Can go straight to final boss?!

Can "finish game" without seeing full story?

This is TRUE freedom. TRUE open world. I'm telling you man, people dog on Nintendo all the time about being late to the punch, but when they tackle a genre, they FUCKING OWN IT. Seems the same will be true for an open world RPG.

Going to Ganon right after waking up, near naked with a stick?

I love this post so much

In the demo, there were guide points to progress the story along.

I'm currently thinking about Wind Waker's intro in regards to the story. It's interesting to think about, given what we know about the game right now.

Cool, that's what I want from it.

A pointer that says "here is the next important story beat" is perfect. I like environmental storytelling but I'm interested in the more classic narrative in a Zelda game. Not that the two can't complement each other but I don't want to miss super important things.
