Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the most talked about game on social media

Zelda is a powerful name. I remember Twilight Princess drove a crazy amount of traffic on gaming websites when it was found, which was pretty rare for a GameCube game.

Glad BotW inspires the same kind of excitement. It's been a while.

Some people in this thread really need to take the salt down from a 10 to a 1, because it is really really sad. But on topic, this game looks aces and I can't wait to play it. And that means I'll have to find a cheap WiiU. That shouldn't be too hard, I think.

Seems to be pretty deserved from all that has been shown. Game looks great - and I'm eager to play it. Obviously some of the hype is overblown because it's a Zelda game, but there's nothing wrong with people loving a franchise. In this case, the game looks stellar too.

However, I'm still a bit worried for Nintendo. I get that they've abandoned the Wii U, but where was Paper Mario? Nothing else in the pipeline at all? If the Wii U is really this dead, should they not be showing off the Nintendo NX in earnest - or is it really still over a year away? If so, it's going to be a rough year for them - and there will be a lot riding on the NX's shoulders.

I was super intro what I saw. However, the thing that just kept popping up was "I would really like to see the NX version instead..."

I know I'm not the only one since the Wii U will be dead by the time this hits it. NX or bust.

There are much more impressive games on display and Nintendo don't deserve so much praise for introducing derivative features that weren't cutting edge even years ago, or designing what appears to be an incredibly sparse open world that has been vastly surpassed by other devs. That's what I'm saying.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be happy and excited but claiming this is the game of E3 is an affront to the fact that many developers have already done what this game does, for years, and they are here at this E3 doing far more and not getting the same praise...

In a Nintendo official forum I wouldn't expect otherwise but from GAF?? I am genuinely shocked.
I dont think the BotW isnt doing anything new, but it is doing everything right. I can't remember the last time I've wanted a game so bad. It just looks well designed and extremely fun. All the other open world games end up feeling the same, but this game looks unique and interesting.

So the only people who like it are Nintendo fans? They like the game because they like Nintendo?

I remember watching a pach attach episode and Pachter said he gets so much more online stuff from Nintendo fans than any other quarter, they are the most Vocal and outspoken online...... and if half of them actually bought a WiiU.....

There is some truth in that. COD and FIFA fans dont go on web sites proclaiming best eva, we won the forum poll/ number of tweets....blah blah....they just buy the game and play it, 20 + million of them every year. And yet every year at E3 or game of the year...guess what ?

It amuses me every year without fail. Reminds me of the small number of fans in the corner of the ground doing all the singing !

For you and every other Nintendo fan.

Was not even close to my top 10. Thought gameplay looked fine, IQ and pop in / LOD was awful - a New console is so long overdue. Will look at it again if it looks better on Nx and maybe adds some density to the world,
Game of show for me thus far, and I'm as neutral as you can get. Haven't had a Nintendo game as game of show since god knows when. Probably Super Mario Galaxy back in 07.

Gravity Rush 2 :(

No one to blame but Sony on that one. They made so many strange decisions for what games to highlight at their conference, and even if the whole pulled Red Dead announcement rumor pans out, they still dedicated over 10 minutes to one game in two separate showings.

As I've said before, no one thing Breath of the Wild is doing is revolutionary or genre-shifting- its the way that all those systems fit together and offer a sheer variety of different options and playstyles that's truly impressive. The only open-world game I've experienced that has anywhere near that variety of play is MGSV, and we've only seen a minute portion of what BOTW has to offer.

Fanboyism be damned, it's easily one of the most exciting games present at the show this year.

The game looks incredible. Grow up.

It's not single features but how they work as a whole that's impressive

Yup. Better late than never, honestly. I don't think decade-old games seamlessly combined all those features into one experience, while this Zelda does so and demonstrates a lot of smart design decisions.

Credit where credit is due. As someone who grew tired of the OoT formula, I'm excited at this renewal of the series.

At the end of the day, social media buzz involves lots of factors. IMO, for video games, the most important factor is still quality. In this respect, Zelda is totally deserved.

Horizon Zero Dawn should be higher though.

That's great. Hopefully it delivers unlike Skyward Sword. It did show a lot of new stuff as we saw gameplay from the likes of Horizon last year but not Zelda. That being said, it was also the only game Nintendo showcased and that too for hours whereas everything else on that list with the exception of Battlefield 1 wasn't beyond their quick demo or teaser trailer so people were exposed to it more.

Best wishes.

Look at the hysterical hyperbole in these Zelda threads, people losing their shit over a game that looks and plays like it's from 2008, and tell me who is the one smoking.

I'm actually a little embarrassed for GAF for losing it's objectivity over this game. If it was being released by Ubisoft and called The Legend of Belda it would be written off as an outdated, mediocre looking action RPG.
This isn't like all the open world games you are from EA, Bethesda, etc. for a few reasons.

I don't know of any instance in those games where EVERYTHING is quite as dynamic as this one. I'm sure you've seen the gifs, but weather is dynamic, rain makes climbing some surfaces hard or impossible, wind blows and carries all implications with that. There was a moment on the stream where they lit a torch, and threw it in front of tall grass. The wind blew it and it started a grass fire!

There was that moment yesterday when they were fighting a robot, used the fire arrow to light the grass on fire, ride the horse close, jump off the horse, use the heat rising from the fire up propel the glider up and shoot the robot in midair.

This game also carries the legacy of Zelda, a legacy that has definitely had a drop in quality lately. Skyward Sword showed everything reaching a critical mass, and they understood it was time to go back and just look at Zelda 1 and go from there. This is the Zelda game many people have wanted for years. It isn't hyperbole.

You should really stop now. Just let it go.

The more we talk about Zelda, whether you like the game or not, the more buzz/interest is generated. Zelda had a great show, amazing art style, captivating trailer and brimming with things to do not to mention the game can be played how ever you want. Damn near complete freedom.
Game of show for me, probably game of year when it launches.

What are you even talking about?

The game looks incredible. Grow up.

It looked terrible, but do the ad hominem, its so mature. I said why it looked bad, the pop in and LOD and the smear filter looked bad to my eyes.

You can counter that or call me names...

except this wasn't a poll on who was bragging about the new zelda being the best game ever. It was merely a poll about anyone who talked about it.

I think after a few years in the trenches Nintendo may finally be on the come up. If they can nail this and the NX launch they might find themselves up with the other two once more.

Horizon Zero Dawn should be higher though.

Sure, but look at all the new IPs above it, there's only 2. The game looks great but it's rank isn't that shocking. Not to mention it had a trailer last week so nothing about it was really that surprising.

I'm a little curious as to how this was done also. Zelda is easy - search for Zelda. Very few tweets containing the word Zelda will be about anything else.

But what about games like Horzon? Do you include all tweets that just say "Horizon" which would end up capturing unrelated tweaks? Or are you looking specifically for the words Zero Dawn as well, which would mean your numbers would be pretty far off.

Seems like the latter considering Battlefront is captured twice, once with a colon and once without.

It has got such a godawful name. Thats why.

Lol! Well that begs the question, what is a Zero Dawn? We haven't seen night at all yet :P

Horizon seems about right. Why do you think it should be talked about more?

Well besides Zelda, it looks to be a more interesting game with its looks, enemy design and gameplay. Especially compared to most everything else in Sony's conference except Spidey.

Look at the hysterical hyperbole in these Zelda threads, people losing their shit over a game that looks and plays like it's from 2008, and tell me who is the one smoking.

2008...what game or games are comparing to?

Really? It looked really dull from the trailer. Just another open-world game only by Nintendo this time.
Man... this is like saying Mario Kart is just a racing game by Nintendo or Super Smash is just a fighting game by Nintendo or Splatoon is just an online shooter by Nintendo

I'm interested partly because it's Nintendo's take on open world fantasy

I never fail to be amused that you seem incapable of defining a game "looking good" as anything other than a comment on the graphics.

Loved it. If Nintendo confirms a Splatoon port for the NX I'll be buying it day one.

Given timings, I suspect we'll be looking at a sequel by that point, or at least a "Deluxe". And I think given how Splatoon went down, we're pretty much looking at some Splatoon representation on NX being a given.

You don't have to like it, but terrible? Is there absolutely no gray area when it comes to evaluating games for you?

That is absolutely right, that is what this game is, and that is why I am so disappointed. I presume that is also why the diehard fans are so incapable of being critical of what they are seeing, because they truly don't want to believe that it's possible this Zelda is not quite as amazing as they know it needs to be.

I am sure it will play well and such, but nothing shown pushes any boundary, not in art direction, not in story telling, not in graphics, not in gameplay, absolutely not in open world design (big =/= better)... And therefore I see no reason to expect this to seriously turn around Nintendo's fortunes in the mainstream gaming market. 14 year old and 30 year olds who have left the fold are probably not going to be won over by this, when it has already been surpassed on most levels by competing games released years ago. If they wanted open world, they had Witcher. If they wanted tight, fantasy-themed combat, they had Souls.

Yeah this game has that Zelda spirit but that wasn't enough for Skyward Sword, why would it be enough for this?

All I've ever wanted from a zelda game is for it to set me free and let me explore the world my way and solve puzzles my way. This game gives me that. Sure, it does nothing new, but it puts it all together in one package. There is no other game that puts ALL of these things together in one place. Some, yes. All of it? no. It might be light on story, but that's fine. So was Zelda 1. If you want an open world RPG with story, there are dozens of other options for you.

Just be happy for the fans who are getting that they want. If it's the game ends up a dud or at the very least isn't for you, just move on, but don't get angry that others are happy.

Have you never been excited when a game was announced and it hit all the bullet points you wanted? Even if all of those bullet points are NOT BRAND NEW game ideas on their own?

I mean, take blizzard games - which you seem to like based on your post history. Nothing blizzard does is new. They just take a bunch of good ideas, put them together, and make them good. They add extra polish and love to it and the game becomes a success - but almost all of their successful games are inspired by past games. Overwatch? Takes moba and team-based shooter ideas and mashes them together into a really nice package. Every idea in overwatch can be found in another game, but I don't think there are many games that put all of those ideas together. Is overwatch objectively bad because all of its ideas can be found in games dating back to 2008? No way.

So when zelda does something where they take a bunch of good game ideas, mash them together, and give the fans what they've been asking for, it's suddenly a problem? We're too dumb to be critical of it because all it's doing is stuff that was done as far back as 2008? Running on underpowered hardware (compared to PS4/XB1/PC) that holds the visuals back is also something we should be criticizing the game for? Please. Find me an open world game from 2008 that looks this good. Find me a game that puts all of these ideas together. Once you do that, then let's talk again about how the game is objectively bad.

I'm glad I can still appreciate fun games even though I'm a pc gamer otherwise I'd miss out.

People on my Facebook feed are freaking out over this game, people I didn't even know liked games. I'm so hyped for this game that it's actually made me less hyped for other games I was looking forward to. :(
