Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

I really got lucky with that $611 G1 on amazon, didn't I?

It depends if you pay tax or not. Im more interested in the Xtremes though. Oh yeah you definitely lucked out tho compared to the msi!

Amazon FTW shipping next week and newegg maybe sooner via Jacob.

Can anyone comment on real life performance difference between a 1080 and 980ti (slight overclock) at 3440x1440?

They're not really that far apart.

This video has been circulating...may be of interest to you.

I had TITAN X SLI - upgraded to 1080 SLI. It is somewhat of a sidegrade, but I will always opt for the best/fastest cards regardless of it being single digit or double digit percentage increase. For all intents and purposes, TITAN X and 980 Ti are about the same. Therefore, if one is truly a miser, getting dirt cheap used 980 Ti's could be the secret to crazy performance for very little money....assuming you get them for around $300 each. My opinion is to opt for the new architecture - always. 1070 or 1080 are both awesome cards...and will only bring more performance as some of their features mature (for me, the VR ones were particularly interesting).

[H] just did an OC review where they compared 1070 OC and 1080 OC to the TITAN X stock...pretty interesting stuff.

Thanks for this, it really puts things in perspective.
My 980ti has been great in 95% of its use cases but sometimes falls just a little shorts, TW3, Hitman, etc. Resale value of a 980ti seems to be around 650AUD, and the price of a 1080 around 1100AUD, I'd still be out of pocket for a substantial amount of money which has been holding me back. The counter argument to this - albeit a bad one, is that by the time a 1080ti releases the 980ti value will truly plummet.

Looking for some advice with EVGA cards. I c urrently have a 980 Ti Classified. I have about a week to step up, if I want to. The best card I can get on their stepup list is the 1080 ACX 3.0 (Can't get the FTW or SC editions).

Is it worth stepping up? I would have to buy an extended warranty (which transfers to my new card) for $30. I paid about the same for the cards, so there won't be any additional costs.

Is the 1080 ACX 3.0 much better than the Ti 980 Classified? I'm very interested in running VR and an ultrawide multimonitor setup.

Get the 1080 for sure, don't worry about the FTW, SC editions these aren't big overclockers until somebody unlocks the voltage thru a custom BIOS.

The 1080 is 20% better than a 980Ti when both are at base clocks, 980Ti pulls a bit closer when overclocked. The 1080 has multi screen projection which will help with future VR titles that use this tech. Worst case, the 1080 probably holds its value more than a 980Ti which is already dropping to $400 (i.e. 1070) levels.

What is the typical Offset on GPU Clock, Mem Clock, Power??

Currently I'm running my 1080 at:

+100 Clock
+100 mem
+0 Power

Also what temps is everyone getting?, I'm reading reviews where people sit around 62 degrees, while all my gaming sessions are 82 for some reason

Ive never gotten above 79. Then again my card can only maintain a stable +75 core OC

Memory types don't affect VR at all ;)

Memory bandwidth (which is a function of type) affects VR rendering just like it would affect normal rendering. I don't really see a reason for VR to be particularly memory bound (or the inverse).

I figured, but I was meaning where the faster memory would benefit and whether it would happen to benefit VR then too.

But I doubt there are good benchmarks for that right now. I assume that it would benefit the regular cases where you are limited by the GPU memory? So resolution, texturing. Normal 8 GB memory is probably enough then.

I said this a few pages ago.

Prelaunch, the 1080 benchmarks left me little underwhelmed, but I have to say, after a week with the 1080, I'm impressed with its 3440x1440 performance. At that resolution, the 1080 is significantly faster than even the 980ti, and sli 980s barely function at that res. It seems that, for ultra wide gaming at least, the 1080 absolutely punches above its weight.

My 1080 OCs to 2180mhz before even touching voltage. So I might have a sight bias ;)

For me, it's a surprisingly noticeable upgrade.

I was amazed but then I realized they didn't overclock the Titan X

Yes. The 1080 should be a little faster now, and may improve with drivers over time. It should also be much better for VR if/when developers support the specific changes in pascal aimed at VR

You are missing one crucial piece of information, what the default clocks on your card are. +100 GPU clock on a FE is very different to +100 GPU on a say Asus Strix.

Based on 82C, I guess you are using a FE. With FE, 62 degrees is achieved only by putting the fan at 100% and even then you probably need a cool environment. With 3rd party cards and coolers, 62C is probably more achievable but again not with default quiet fan settings. 1070 is a different story because it runs cooler than a 1080.

Hi Team Green, any news or reviews on EVGA's Classified edition yet?
Nope, not until some time into July -- at least that's the last thing I heard. I think the classified model might be a questionable SKU anyway unless modded BIOSes show some significant gains and actually requires the extra power and phases which is doubtful.

Speaking of which, how long did it take for people to figure out Maxwell BIOS and flashing? Last time I checked OCnet they had Pascal BIOS reading ready and were able to flash vanilla BIOS to cards.

Hello! Random question... I've been an AMD guy since 09 when I got back into PC gaming and then bought a pair of 7970s at launch, put them into my water loop and have not looked back since then.

I think I may make the switch to a pair of 1080s as soon as they are back in stock. Well, my question is in regards to audio. I can't find any specific answer, but will I be able to hook them up, via HDMI to my AVR receiver and output bitstream audio? I just want to make sure that HDMI audio will work the same way as it currently does for AMD. Since I have the whole thing set up to a 54in plasma and a 120 in projector and will need the audio to be output in 7.1 for my set up. I'm just ignorant to Nvidia HDMI audio options.

Anyone have any idea if the Gainward GTX 1080 cards are any good? I can't recall seeing any discussions about them, but now I have the opportunity to buy a Gainward GeForce GTX 1080 Phoenix GS as it's actually in stock. I've just got to make sure I have enough room since it occupies 2.5 expansion slots. My current order is for the EVGA SC, but it keeps getting pushed back.

I've had a delayed Strix on order for quite some time now. Back then Strix was speculated to be top dog along with the FTW. I considered MSI for the twin frozzzrredz and now I see people flocking to that, and Gigabyte for availability. Then there's the whole custom BIOS situation.

For me, it's just a big mess!

So questions are... are the card comparisons still based on speculation since the cards pretty much aren't out yet? Is there a reliable rundown where all the cards are compared to show either differences or if one card is just as good as another?

How big of a deal is the BIOS thing compared to real world performance?

1440p on a 4K monitor is far superior to 1080p on a 4K monitor, I can assure you. These "artifacts" refer to the interpolation that takes place.

Okay, thanks for the info. This GTX 1080 card is my first foray into PC gaming beyond integrated graphics, so there's a lot I'm learning about for the first time.

That isn't exactly correct, to keep it simple 4K is 4 times 1080p, 1440 is kind of an odd one, it doesn't natively render well without clipping or screwing up the ratio which can and usually will result in noticeable blur. It's best to play 1080p on a 4K monitor (if you can't properly push 4K I guess was the discussion here) or 1440p on a native 1440p monitor or on a 5k monitor

HOWEVER with a gtx 1080 I don't see any troubles driving 4K in your future, given you drop some taxing settings depending on the game and desired framerate.

Got my MSI Gaming X today. Thought it was fucked at first but turned out it was my HDMI cable, thank the lord for that.

Loaded up Witcher 3 at 4k max settings except turned off AA (really don't see the need at that resolution) and just wow. Teleported to Novigrad and there was a full on storm going down. Looked insane. Wasn't monitoring the framerate but had to lock it to 30 for it to feel solid. Really glad I held out on the DLC, looking forward to playing it.

Haven't really done any tinkering except using the MSI app to set OC mode on. Probably won't do anything else to it to be honest.

Good to hear man! I shall have my Gaming X tomorrow or Thursday.

Like you, I'll set OC mode through the app and leave it at that. Too scared to OC any other way lol

Good first impressions on my G1. It's boosting to around ~1911-1936 out the gate without any tweaking, and load temp hovers around 72.

Anyone running into a game where they're not getting the performance they want/expected? I'm really impressed so far. I just need to try out something else tonight. Overwatch on epic settings is running silky smooth and Rise of the Tomb Raider was running great with everything maxed.

The reviews of the GHL version have all been very positive. It uses the same cooler than the GS, there's only a bit more factory overclocking on the GHL. Also there is a Palit Game Rock that uses the same cooler but with different colors (Gainward and Palit are part of the same company).

Basically the card is one of the quietest 1080, and the temperatures are great. Also no coil whine reported. So if you're ok with the look of the card and the 2.5 slot, I'd say it's a very good choice. I ordered two GS myself yesterday because they were the only non-FE in stock and I was tired of waiting for an Asus/MSI/EVGA.

Thanks! I had to check if I actually had room for a 2.5 slot card, but it turns out I do. Ordered the GS and expect to receive it before the weekend. That sure beats waiting until July 6th or longer for the EVGA SC. :)

I should've just bought the 980 K|ngp|n edition that was on sale on amazon yesterday. I have a hamstrung Vive that is dying to be played with. -_-

Cant you just order a 1080 that's on backorder from Newegg/Microcenter/NCIX? I know NCIX lets you do it so you'll get one as soon as they have stock.

Where can I pick one up? Can't find a link to buy it.

Can anyone with Rise of the Tomb Raider and my specs do me a favor? I feel I'm not gotten the full potential of my PC.

My specs:
Intel i7-6700K (not overclocked)
Gigabyte G1 1080 (not overclocked)
16GB DDR4-3000
Windows 10 64-bit
1080p monitor

On Rise of the Tomb Raider, I have everything set to max except resolution which is limited to 1080p. SSAAx4, VSync, Very High Settings, DX12, everything enabled.

Guru3D did a benchmark with slightly less settings is is getting way better specs than me. I'm getting an average of around 58fps while they're at 142fps with less AA.

Lmao yeah no problem

Errr.

Vsync is intentionally capping your fps at 60. XD

A day with the 1080 and I'm happy with it. So good after these years with a 670.

Yeah! Same jump I made. Still rocking the 3570k @4ghz and 8gb of slow ass DD3 ram.
Machine is running like a beast though, everything maxed at 1440p between 100-144+ fps.
Feels good.

MassDrop has the MSI 1080 Gaming X available for purchase here.

You may sign up and commit to the lowest price ($689). It says they expect to have these shipped on July 1st (next Friday). Hopefully this helps you guys out.
Fuck it, I just went for this. Won't charge until they actually make the buy and the differences between manufacturers this gen aren't substantial enough for me to keep "holding out" indefinitely. Will post as (and if, I suppose) this progresses.

Really appreciate the link.
Just order an EVGA 980ti from a qualified retailer and immediately get into the step-up queue.
I considered that, yeah. Wasn't super keen on going for an EVGA but it's the kind of appraoch that makes sense with this launch, lol. I'll give this thing with Massdrop until my birthday (the 4th) and then switch to that plan I suppose.

Well I committed, never used this site before. Hope I don't regret it. This card looks like a good one.

Same - seems like the best way to ensure you get it before August at this rate and the price is reasonable. I'm assuming they'll have no problem ensuring that enough people sign up to take advantage of the offer....

EDIT: Oh, the estimated ship date is July 29. Screw that.

I've never used them before either but I've heard generally good things. Their methodology is pretty clever. I wouldn't have taken the risk two years ago but they seem to have established themselves.

Yeah, I figure this is an avenue to make the ridiculous demand actually work in our favor to some slight degree.

I kinda wanted to go with the Gigabyte extreme but I suppose this will do. That other one looked good too the Gainward’s GTX 1080 Phoenix GLH but I've no idea where to get that at.
