Steam Summer Sale 2016: Hidden Gems & Deals

if you finish fc youll be buying sc the second after

SC picks up right where FC leaves off, so no.

It's... pretty much the most direct direct sequel ever. It picks up like within hours of FC's ending and you transfer over alot of the stats and event flags also carry over. Really, they are practically two halves of the same game.

FC is sort of a self contained story, but it does end on a cliffhanger that will probably motivate you to keep playing.

All right, thanks! I'll be picking it up in a couple of days, then!

*begins significantly shuffling wishlist*

Going to recommend a cute Rouge like called One Way Heroics.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/266210/

It's a cute rouge like where you can only keep heading right,it's a real funny way to make fun of some old school jrpgs for less than a buck it's worth checking out.

Interested but looks way daunting. Does your Civ V comment really stand?

You'll run into differences, but nothing so huge that you couldn't figure it out. The tutorial leaves much to be desired all the same, but, yes if you know how to play Civ V you won't have much trouble figuring out Endless Legend.

It's £5.19. This and the MISERY mod is the most fun you can get from a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.

I recommend the stalker as well, but I would recommend the following:

First play Shadow of Chernobyl. Use Zone Reclamation Project mod. It fixes bugs.
Second, play Call of Pripyat with no mods. Its good out of the box.
If you hanker for more Stalker, then play Clear Sky with Sky Reclamation Project.

Then dive into the wonder world of mods. Call of Pripyat has all the good ones like Call of Chernobyl, Misery, and a whole bunch of single player campaigns and whatnot.

Can someone remind me if the Complete mods for the STALKER games are compatible with the Steam versions?
They are but why would you use them? They are bad, dont use them. Theres no reason to even use the one for Clear Sky now that Sky Reclamation Project is all well and good.

For those recommending Trails in the Sky FC and SC... as someone who's a couple hours into FC currently, do I need SC right away or is the first game self-contained that I can potentially wait until the winter sale to pick up SC?

The wait for SC after finishing FC was some of the most painful years of my life.

If you can even manage to finish FC and not wanna jump right way into SC, you're a stronger person than me.

I can definitely recommend Tales of Maj'Eyal:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/259680/

One of the best roguelikes on steam.

It's 75% off for the base game currently so it's $1.74 right now.

The base game + Expansions are 55% off so that's $7.19.

It's a fantastic game. You can play it roguelike style, where it's one death or bust. Or you can do exploration mode to unlock classes/races and have unlimited lives. Or a medium adventure mode where you get like 5 or so, and can get a couple within the game itself.

Has a huge amount of builds and playstyles. It's really amazing and I can't recommend it enough for a roguelike.

Raw, Naked Shilling, just how you like it.

Legend of Grimrock 2: The GOTY for 2014
weak year my ass
~ $8.39 (65% off)

dux5Ldk.png

You know those games that come out and feel good, feel right, and play right, but they juuuuuuuuuuuuuust don't have the scope, polish, or the design in a few facets quite right to really work, but so damn enjoyable and honest and true in their aim that you like the game and wish the devs the best on the next adventure? That was Grimrock 1.

And you know that NEXT game, that takes the scope, polish, and design critiques and sends that sequel thru the roof with some of the best-thought out gaming you've experienced and an all-time classic? THAT'S Grimrock 2.

They did so much so right in this game.

A grander scale with a whole island full of smaller dungeons to explore. More puzzles. More secrets. More variety. More ambience. More choice. More monsters. More loot. More boss fights. More MORE.

It's a much more stabler adventure, with fewer bugs and those were squashed within two weeks of launch. And on top of that, Almost Human fixed the skill system with a PROPERLY simpler one. No more meaningless maxed Spellcraft bonus; everything having 5 tiers and everyone having access to every school makes for some crazy min-maxing and "sure, why not?" class ideas like Fighters who have high INT and spam magical special weapon attacks to complement 1's single example of dual tomahawkin' Mino Rogues. It's fun!

Bless this post.

Subbing to this. I completely forgot about Black Mesa so I might pick that up.

Is Defense Grid 2 good? I like tower defense games and the first one was fun. DG2 is currently $3.74 in the sale.

Adding two classic games, will go back and add to existing recommendations!

CALL OF CTHULHU: SHADOW OF THE COMET
http://store.steampowered.com/app/389470/

Point and click adventure meets cosmic horror in this game. Classic Lovecraftian elements, fun puzzles, excellent soundtrack.

$1.49 (-75% off)

CALL OF CTHULHU: PRISONER OF ICE
http://store.steampowered.com/app/359620/

An old school point and click adventure set in the rich world of HP Lovecraft. Very atmospheric, interesting puzzles, well written, etc.

$1.49 (-75% off)

I've been looking at all of them in my steam list for like 2 years now not playing any of them because of "these are the good moods and this is the order for everything"

I know I could have looked it up/asked but never bothered so thanks for this, now I have a starting point

Can I recommend a title from the OP even when I've played it on a different platform (for example, I'd recommend Life is Strange but I've only played it on PS4, not on PC)?

EDIT: Seeing as this has been linked to as recommendation in the OP, I'll elaborate: Life is Strange is a charming and engaging adventure game with an interactive narrative. It's not perfect and the writing can be a bit cringe-worthy at times but the overal plot is quite interesting and the characters are great and really manage to pull you into their world. All in all, it's basically a coming of age story meets crime mystery, meets time travel, meets high school drama.

As long as it's on the summer sale it shouldn't matter I'd assume

Well theres a lot of things floating about. People often recommend you mod out of the gate, but you should play the originals (just with fixed bugs first and foremost). If you want different balance, gameplay, freeplay, etc. theres a billion possibilities out there. The community has went nuts with both small and big mods.

Call of Chernobyl (for Call of Pripyat) for example is all the maps in the series plus a bunch of new ones all tied together as free-play. You go and do what you want. Then this mod itself there is options such as STCoP which adds and rebalances weapons. Theres also Arsenal Overhaul and Weapon Renewal, but they arent as well fleshed out.

Shadow of Chernobyl has OGSE (which is one of the bigger overhauls for that game) yet I have never played it but people have said good things about it. Faction Wars for Clear Sky is another one as well.

The best I can always recommend is just bug fixes first and foremost. If you like the games but want more, then the mods are out there. They are out there in ways you will be shocked to discover. The community has been pumping out stuff for nearly a decade. its something else.

If I was going to get one way of the samurai title which would be best?

I want to know this too. I played the first one on PS2 way back in the day so I know I like it, but I want to know which one is more worth getting.

I really like both games, so for me it's hard to recommend one over the other.

I think that the story paths in Way of the Samurai 3 are better, and the game is less quirky than 4. It's also set in a time period that people will find easier to associate with samurai.
WotS 4, on the other hand, is way quirkier (home of the famous Melinda Megamelons) and the story paths have worse writing, but it's got a ton more accessories and more refined gameplay/graphics. The time period is also pretty interesting (late 19th century, with foreigners coming to Japan)

Thanks for doing this Dusk Golem, amazing work.

My recommendation for one of this sale's hidden gems is Republique

The game is currently 50% off and costs $12.49 (matching it's all-time low set during the Winter Sale last year). It's a story-rich stealth / adventure game set in a dystopian future. I've played a few episodes in and it's really great.

Doesn't the game shit the bed in the final few episodes? I remember hearing something about that.

I've only played the demo for this but I'm gonna buy it.

$7.49

Salt seems like a really well made open world survival game and it has overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Another great one is Subnautica which I have played extensively. I put about 34 hours into it and then stopped myself so that I wouldn't burn out before the full game releases. It's an absolutely fantastic game

$11.99

Thea: The Awakening is a roguelike/RPG/4X where you try to survive in a harsh, Slavic mythology-inspired world. You will lead a village to their death many times before even approaching a victory. And you will love it. Highly recommended for 4X fans; lots of micromanagement, but it pays off in a big way with how personal it makes the different characters under your control. There is really nothing else like it.

The devs have given it two big, free DLCs now: one that expands the game, and one that adds multiplayer. Has a bright future ahead.

And

Intrusion 2. The most awesome 2D shoot'em'up you will ever play. It's only a few hours long, but the bosses are sublime, the very definition of epic encounters. Plus it has a Mischief Makers reference which automatically makes it god-tier.

Special guest appearance
header.jpg

HAMMERFIGHT! Gladiatorial helicopter action unlike anything else, entirely mouse-controlled. It is a tale of revenge, redemption, or perhaps revengeance, in a bizarre sci-fi world. You will come to understand just how deadly gravity is when tethered to something heavy, and learn to fear flying things.

Whatever you expect, you were wrong.

To add to this, the Plus DLC rounds out the game and adds a bunch of fun stuff. Highly recommend them both. As far as roguelites go, it is second only to FTL in my eyes.

Haul so far is:

- Grim Dawn
- Darkest Dungeon
- Punch Club

Gifted my gf Sundew Valley. Looks right up her alley, shes played the hell out of every Harvest Moon.

Life is strange for $10 sounds pretty good, but still salty I missed amazon's $6 sale last month

(How the hell do you sell out of steam codes in less than 3 hrs?)

I'll try to do a more thorough write-up later on (I'm on phone right now) but I really wanted to recommend The Count Lucanor. It's a short, top-down action-adventure with fantastic atmosphere. Trailer here.

Catching up on the one's I don't normally shill for but should:

Valkyria Chronicles. Looks great. Plays great. Sounds great. Allows you to do Stupid Things like good RPGs should.

Dark Souls 1 Beat it. You'll be better for it. Man-Serpent Great Sword 4 lyfe

Recettear. Surprisingly glib and hilarious, with addictive play. "Can't you just sell it for a teensy bit less?" "GTFO OF MY STORE"

Rocket League If you don't like this, you died inside. Also get ahead of the ball on defense once you buy it please.

This Starry Midnight We Make. WTF is this game and why did I play it so much. Cavyhouse knows visual design, I know that much.

Fortune Summoners. You thought it was kawaii desu ne, but it was me, Hardcore 2D Sword Combat!

Yes, Burnout Paradise is an amazing amazing game. Great sense of speed, great multiplayer and so much to do.

Oh yeah, that's absolutely true. I played the heck out of the game on the PS3 ever since it came out in 2008. I grabbed the PC version on Steam last year, and although it's familiar territory, I enjoy tackling the various events and challenges all over again.

Is this multiplayer still active for this on PC?

You know, I hadn't really played the multiplayer on the PC game yet. That said, when I was playing a few days ago, I went to the Easy Drive menu and glanced at the list of multiplayer games, and there were a few small sessions going at that time.

One reason why I recommended the game while it's deeply discounted is that the influx of new players might give a little boost to the multiplayer pool, even if that boost is only temporary.

Can this be played with a controller?

Yes, I played with the xbox 360 controller. Was fully supported, including appropriate graphics for buttons.

Yep, and I used a Dualshock 4 with no issues (other than Xbox button prompts).

Top of the page, so I'll also throw out my nth plug for Zachtronics' trio of programming puzzle games:
