Is this berserk musou dlc real? (PTSD casca)

Well, now that someone called me out for not being able to have an opinon on this matter because I didn't watch/read the source material, where do I begin watching Berserk? (I'd rather not read the manga) I've heard there's an anime, movie adaptations and a new animation project releasing this year, but I can't find clear information about how should I watch all of it.

Is this game planned to adapt the whole Berserk story up until now? Is the series really long?

EDIT: Just heard the new anime is a brand new adaptation that serves as a follow up to the movie trilogy. Am I good watching the movies and then waiting for the new anime to start?

Wow some people are taking this seriously almost thought for a moment this wasn't fiction :)

None of the video material covers the entirety of the series youre only gonna get the first arc in the old anime and the movie adaptations. This game and the new anime are gonna have stuff past the first arc. Im pretty sure the new anime has nothing to do with Golden Age. And this series has been running since like '89 theres like 34 volumes of manga to burn through at this point its very long.

Too true.

I never said ASOIAF exotifies rape. It does however, have graphic sexual details that do not add to the story. One example is Theon having sex with the prostitute in Clash of Kings with no real impact or reasoning for being there. It's highly graphic, talks to wiping his sperm on her. It adds nothing except to create some haughty fiction.

Yeah, that's a bit gratuitous but not "way worse" than titillating rape scenes, not to me anyway. It's just a sex scene, that's mostly there to add character development for Theon. Besides, even if it's meant to titillate (which I honestly don't think it was, despite being somewhat graphic), better it happens with a relatively normal/consensual sex scene than a rape...

Your avatar is an animu ninja with F cups. No one cares what you think about this subject.

At the time, in my mind, Berserk's sexual violence actually existed for a reason and wasn't done to tittilate. Going back and looking through pivotal scenes told me the opposite. I guess my mind remembered them wrong or I wanted to pretend something I love and enjoy didn't treat a serious subject I care about like this. But you're right. As much as ASOIAF has its weird sexual moments, looking at it, Berserk goes way further.

Judging form the wording and what not, i am almost a 100% sure
this is so pre-eclipse. When they say 'bathing suit' my mind instantly goes to the bathing scene she has with guts WAY before the eclipse. You know, right before her and Guts have some hot consensual bang bang... before he freaks out in his own PTSD flashback from his rape that I think a lot of people tend to forget about in the grand span of the manga.

Unbelievably gross. This marketing will be the death sentence of the game in the US, and with good reason.

If a Musou game doesn't sell in the US, it won't be due to rape imagery. I doubt they'll use that in their marketing anyway, since, once again, this was a CGI teaser.
Hell, I don't even know if they still get tv ads (not counting Hyrule Warriors for obvious reasons).

I really hope this depiction of Caska and the whole "sex sells" approach is limited to the marketing of the game.

Caska post-Eclipse is horrible and my biggest problem with the manga series, but the initial reveal of her mental condition is crushing and still fresh on my mind. Tecmo using that costume feels cheap and offensive.

It is after the eclipse

I have been over that link top to bottom and there is nothing there saying anything about the eclipse. Honestly, I think it makes more sense as the bath scene since they aren't going to actually have her naked in model for that. I know the Eclipse is the one thing everyone thinks about when they think Berserk, but there was a lot of great stuff before and after that point; great character moments, great fights, great everything. Berserk became one of the best manga of all time for good story telling and art, not shock value.

A few pages back there is a comparison between the costume and a panel that takes place after the eclipse and they are identical

fuck the movies .. Watch the series then read the manga from start

I've been reading everything here because seeing all the negative fan reactions to the tentacle trailer and this DLC made me hopeful that the series isn't as 'rape erotica' as I assumed it was.

This brings up another point/concession I didn't make it: Berserk has matured in the 30 years it's been running.

People champion Berserk as this well written, mature, dark fantasy series but it literally opens with the hero fucking a monster before blowing its head off with a literal hand cannon. The first three volumes are entirely about the ultimate Edgelord going on a revenge spree before any character development happens. What Berserk was at the beginning is very different from what it is now. And, aside from the troll arc, old Berserk was way more sexually exploitative.

This post has been the most motivational to get back into the series since I've only read the first volume and felt the same way regarding Guts being an edgelord (and Puck didn't help me stay interested) and as such I couldn't see how the series would be this mature, well written masterpiece that people often praise it to be.

I also appreciate Cindi's posts, seeing their opinion after a new rereading was helpful.

I still don't know if I intend on trying the series again but atleast now I'm more open to it.

Yep it does start as just some cool asshole wrecking shit, but as soon as the flashbacks starts the ride begins

I mean there's still a cool asshole wrecking shit, but there's a lot of other interesting stuff going on too

If you're absolutely against reading the manga, then watch the movies as the upcoming tv series is a direct continuation to their adaptation of the golden age arc.

Are you serious?
What the hell does anyone's avatar have to do with their opinion?

Your comment is incredibly rude.

The poster has an avatar featuring an unrealistically proportioned anime ninja girl who's about to expose her tits. It's not irrational to assume that his opinions on an incredibly sensitive topic that revolves around the depiction of females being sexually vulnerable in media aren't all that mature.

On topic I think the cover's fucking laughable. The reason the scene stood out in Berserk was because of how it painted the events as utterly horrific and the sexualisation of that is gross.

The first few volumes are generally considered the worst with the part where the manga goes back to how Gut's life began to getting to that point to be where it gets good. It's why a lot of people suggest skipping it when reading through the first time at least.

Alright, sociopathic hot-headed asshole

I'm gonna be honest, that was kind of a selling point for me with the early parts of the series. I always really loved that Guts was just an asshole, and that almost every character but Puck flat out said "this guy is a crazed monster" whom doesn't so much 'save' people as much as kill the big thing killing them.

Enough to be a problem? A nice, 2016 answer. But yes, sexual abuse is a major theme in the mange if you completely ignore the context. Good job you two.
What does that even mean? If you have a problem with very graphic depictions of rape, Berserk has a lot of them; ergo, it's a problem for that audience.

Okay. I did. I've already stated plenty in this thread before hand. It just didn't sit well with your adolescent mind and/or you just bother to see if I posted before. It's okay though.
Whats the point of calling people who disagree with you juvenile, when the argument is not nearly that cut and dry?
It's barely above calling people who like Berserk perverts.

People "defending" this are doing it on the basis that the source material stoops down to similar levels, which isnt far off.

Was that the prototype chapters to Berserk or no? I need to bust out my books again....
If I wasn't a lazy person playing OW, lol

The prototype chapter had Guts a lot more merry and was off in a lot of ways. Still interesting to read, its still out there on the internet. A lot of Miura's early work is kind of crappy. Japan gets real nationalistic but with a title like that who would have figured otherwise.

I honestly don't even see why a consenaual sex scene shouldn't titillate the audience, in the first place, ideally both genders.
Consensual sex is supposed to be arousing, thats how it operates in real life.

As long as it makes sense in the story, but that goes for any scene, really.
That's mostly the problem in GoT (tv, havent read the books) a lot of the nudity halted the story more than anyhing, or was distracting and it was pretty onesided, with male nudity played mostly as a joke.

Its the one where he has an eyepatch, right? Man, he was so much worse at drawing, then.

Yeah he has an eye patch and kind of looks like a Pirate and is a lot more snarky. He basically just kills a monster and moves on. There isn't much to it but you can see the early ideas behind Berserk still brewing there.

Oh, I agree. Even if one did find that one Theon scene arousing, well, it might be considered gratuitous but I'd still wouldn't call that "worse" than a graphic, eroticized rape scene. xD That said Cindi seemed to agree with the general sentiment after all, so I'll drop this line of conversation.

97 anime, third movie, then new anime. The characters in Berserk are great, but the movies rush several things and I don't recommend it for first timers. The third movie is for a character that wasn't in the 97 series, but is crucial to the post eclipse story.

The manga is a beautiful thing....give the guy's life work a chance

It was a change in opinion based on new facts.

When I said ASOIAF was worse, I was basing my opinion on pure memory. When I couldn't remember if it did erocitize Casca's rape I decided to speed read through when I got the chance. Because I think having facts and not pure conjecture is important when discussing things like this. When I made that comment, all I remembered about that scene were the gritty details: my favorite characters dying, Casca being sexually violated against her will, Guts being held down and forced to watch and cutting off his own arm just to help her, the horrible and very serious aftermath. When you don't read something for over ten years and even if it's one of your favorite things, you're going to only remember basic details rather than fine ones.

I'll say I was wrong about it too. I do think ASOIAF has a lot of gratuitous scenes for the sake of it and I felt that, in my memory, Berserk doesn't have that and that the sex is typically there to service a thematic point just like the violence. But re-reading killed that quickly and I hate to say it doesn't. ASOIAF handles this much better than Berserk, but to be fair to Berserk a lot of the sexual violence it does have does have serious implications, including the rape we're discussing now. In my head, Miura didn't eroticize Casca during the Eclipse but the reality is that he totally does. Whether or not this is done for story purposes reflecting her wishes through her time with Griffith or not, it eroticizes her from the get go as something sexy rather than horrifying. Maybe it's both. Maybe the point is to tie a link between sexual violence and horror through pure visual. I'm not sure. But then it has a lot of shots concentrating on her butt and has concentrated on a giant Goddess with big boobs just pages before that.

In my mind, Berserk was above pure tittilation and sexualization. It's one of my favorite fantasy stories of all time, so I'm going to put it on a weird pedestal. I was wrong for that.

As one ASOIAF fan to another, I think you should give Berserk a chance. It's not perfect but I fucking love it.

Funny, that's why I never read it before the game announcement, and to my surprise he's a big softy at heart.

You should read the chapter "Spring Flowers of Distant Days". It's in volume 37, but it's a flashback chapter (before the Hawks). It's, in my opinion, the best part of the latest Berserk (official western release anyway).

The characters and world are why I like the series so much. The action is cool, but it's not why I spent over $100 to read/watch it all. That chapter was a refreshing change of pace after the rather boring Sea God arc.

Watch the old TV series, it improves on the manga (and removes a lot of the excessive rape scenes).

i really have to question the "it doesn't eroticize rape" crowd what exactly they think Miura is doing with his repeated use of multi-panel/page scenes depicting various demons having domineering sexual intercourse with nameless, nubile, young women.

to note: this happens with less and less regularity as the manga progresses.

This has been a demon representation thing since people started to draw and paint them.
Maybe there are more demon cocks than demon horns on demon paintings.

Too true.

He was experiencing freedom. He finally could live like the lords he envied so much and he loved to do so.
Right after that something really important happens to him which kinda goes against what he just learned to love (freedom and empowerement)

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever read the first few volumes. I watched the old anime and continued where it left off in the manga, after the eclipse. Well, I did go back alittle to where
they tried to save Griffith when he was getting tortured, and also where Guts killed his first monster with a broken sword.

I think I should go and read those first few volumes and see what's it all about.

WOOAAHHHHH, let's not get carried away here

Will say tho as someone who originally watched the anime and then read the manga really out of order I thought the Wyald part was unnecessary and kinda hampered the impact of the Eclipse. But only a tiiinnny bit.

Anyways read the manga and then Berserk Abridged

Edit Is Wyald not in the movies either? Ehhh that's fiinne

The movies and the first anime both skip things, it's best to just read the manga from the beginning.

yeah movie skips things, one particular thing that bothered me is that there's some stuff that happens between second and third movie, the adventure of Guts are fairly fun and cool and give more screen time to a villain/new character.

I don't necessarily miss the penis monster though, that aspect the movie did right.

Hmm....

The teaser trailer didn't bother me at all since I thought they did a pretty good job setting the tone and showing off just how dark Berserk is.

But this? This is weird. Offensive? Nah. But weird? Yeah. This is clearly an "oh look, boobs! Let's add in this costume to get some attention" situation. Which sadly, isn't surprising.

But to not buy the game simply because of this? Seriously? It's just a DLC bonus. Some of you need to relax.

I don't know about how japanese fans consume it, or western ones even.

But the author does indeed portray sexual violence against women in a way that is aimed to titillate the audience, and frequently at that. Practically every female character in the series has either suffered through or been threatened by sexual violence depicted in this way.

So while this DLC is incredibly in poor taste, it about lines up with how the series treats women and rape. It sucks

Every single female character in the series has either been raped or threatened by rape.

The anime is a very small part of the entire series and I don't think it comes anywhere near being 344 episodes lol
Huh. Maybe I'm too close to the material (been a fan since the early 2000s which is when I first randomly stumbled across the DVDs) but that was never my takeaway. To me these things were portrayed in a way meant to challenge the viewer. The imagery out of context and indeed in context could seem sexualized but scenes like the
Caska being assaulted in and her clothing torn open as a kid, the king maniacally groping/ violating his daughter when Griffith correctly called him out for being attracted to her, the intensely disgusting orgy around the goathead god, and the nightmare Gutts has when he bites through and eats Caska's breast, and nudity like that of the fairies and etc
are all meant to be uncomfortable graphic depictions. Not things to get you hot under the collar.

Also come on. It's obvious that 344 is referring to the manga chapters.

It erotcizes Casca being raped before Griffith even shows up. The teaser trailer's treatment of the rape is how it's handled in the manga. I just read it and it treats it very similarly. Sure, we the readers know it's fucked up, but look at Casca and the way she's drawn and way she reacts. It's almost like she wants it. This is before Griffith even shows up.

I haven't read this in literally ten years so re-reading it was a eye opening.

You aren't wrong. I won't argue it isn't being used in that way but I maintain that the intention is to disturb the viewer. I just think that context is everything and whether or not it vibes with the source material or how it was used in a promotional sense in the past I still think it's in bad taste and I'm having a hard time thinking up other examples that where things like this have been done with other IP that has as horrifying events.

I personally wish certain scenes were different and in that sense I consider what I saw in Berserk a success because it did make me feel very uncomfortable which is what I thought the point of it all was. And I say that as a person who has just reread the entire manga and finished catching up to the current chapter in the last week.

Well, now that someone called me out for not being able to have an opinon on this matter because I didn't watch/read the source material, where do I begin watching Berserk? The original anime is how most of us watched it first. This is a fan recut of the original anime that I have been rewatching (though the original is also on youtube if you look for it) and I personally prefer it to how it was originally done so far (less than half way through, it's probably still the same cut and just skips the first episode which is fine by me since it is better seen at the end of the series instead of the begining). Reading it would take less time and give you a more genuine experiance (as this show is sometimes being strangled by it's own budget) but if you have to watch an adaptation I think most people would agree that the 97 anime is a good place to start since it does, at the very least, reach the eclipse which is the scene this thread is about.

what?! when did this happen???

End of volume 9, when Guts returns to the then fugitive Band, before they go and get Griffith. Guts' PTSD flashback about his childhood abuse occurs when he and Casca get physical for the first time. It can be seen at other times, when he shies away from physical contact, but that time he actually goes a little crazy and almost strangles Casca before shaking it off. He then suffers a breakdown that Casca basically hugs him out of.
Remember people! Guts' rape made him stronger!
I've seen plenty of weird claims about Berkserk over the years, including one that says he rapes the demon at the very start of the manga, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone make that claim, joking or no.
