Steam Summer Sale 2016 |OT| It's better than nothing

I just finished a few hours of playing Submerged, which is 66% off ($6.79) right now which matches it's current historical low price (although it's $3.99 on sale on PSN for + members, which is where I bought it.)

The game focuses on exploration and storytelling rather than combat or action. In a way, it's really relaxing as you take your boat out over a long lost forgotten sunken city which happens to be the ruins of a modern day metropolis. Your job is to gather supplies to aid your wounded younger brother. The focus on exploration here really shines, and the graphics are pretty nice too with some great water and lighting effects.

As you progress through the story, you're given a series of pictograms that tell the story of what happened to the city, and also tell the story of how you got there to begin with and what happened to your brother. There is some voice acting but it's all in a strange made up language, so a lot of the story telling is done through pictures and body language.

You can find and pick up boat upgrades as well as story pieces, and you get a telescope which you can use to look for supplies and also watch the local wildlife. Once you find the supplies you can dock your boat and gather them up by climbing ledges, vines, ladders, gutters, etc.

It's pretty short probably around 3 hours (more if you want to gather up all the things) but it's a nice little game you should keep an eye on if you're a fan of story-heavy exploration games.

So just ran it with stats on. I'm getting between 15-30% GPU usage on both GPU's in the scenes where the Framerate hits 12-15FPS in the bench..

75-85% usage in the first part..

So, looks as if it may indeed just be my CPU.

Even cranking it to 4K, my usage goes up, but in that last scene, my FPS tanks. Unless I change the number of units on screen, from ultra to high or medium, it smooths out the Framerate.

(Of course then the battles look much less impressive due to the lack of units...)

Is the 3770k really THAT outdated? I was under the impression it kept up pretty well with most games?( haven't had a problem until now)

Multi-tiered boss fights that don't have checkpoints surely has to be the worst gamedesign right? I'm shaking I'm so damn mad. So close to uninstalling Witcher 3 and deleting it from my account.

Why couldn't the Total Warhammer: Chaos DLC just go on sale? It would make everything so much easier for me.

Valve pls

No, it's still unskippable cutscenes/dialog. Definitely up there, though. I remember a boss from Mass Effect 1 that I always got stuck on (elevator Krogan ambush) that was the worst. And it had both unskippable cutscenes and uncheckpointed battles.

Is it a boss werewolf or Jenny? Because the former was the most difficult fight in the game for me, due to how early it was and my general lack of alchemy at the time. Really had to scrounge together everything I had to beat it during the second stage.

I, uh, really loved it though.

Haha yeah you are right, that really is the worst!

I'm the latter parts of Blood & Wine. Of course, overall I love Witcher 3, still think it among the best games I've played. Luckily boss fights like that are uncommon in the game.

Ah. I'm only at the beginning of Blood & Wine. Definitely some long boss fights, even early on. Hopefully I don't get crushed too much later on... though with how I've specced Geralt (magic & alchemy) I feel like there's not much that can actually hurt him.

Potions are really, stupidly powerful if you can get the tier-3 recipes. The combat-focused default Geralt I used in Heart of Stone had me wishing I imported my real Geralt the entire time...

I remember the Draugr fight in Witcher 2 when the game launched being some infuriating bullshit, speaking of multi-tiered bosses with unskippable cutscenes that take away your characters default skillset on top of everything.

I love the Witcher games but if they have one obvious reoccurring blindspot, it seems to be playtesting their boss battles. The barghest in W1 had some of the same nonsense, now that I think of it.

Uh, on the bright side, you can expect the fight you're thinking of to be patched or tweaked in some way in a month or two.

Does it help to lower the difficulty? I always do that on bosses that annoy me, because I don't want them to stand in the way for the rest of the game.

On average you're right but the lows will be much lower, overclocking should give you a massive boost in situations like that. Also I doubt the Total Wars will run on any CPU without some noticeable drops, they're known to eat hardware alive, don't get fooled by benchmarks not showing minimum fps.

Ah yeah I think you are probably more prepared than I was. I didn't have good oils or potions and was too late to craft.

Ah yeah that's what I did, it became way too easy but felt good to get on with the story.

I'm looking for something with a good story. Should I go with Witcher 3: Blood and Wine (18€) or SOMA+Life is Strange (24€). I really liked Heart of Stone, but sci-fi's also right up my alley.

B&W is barely on sale, get the others and snag it later given it'll be barely different price wise when you decide to go for it.

Dream don't die and Bullet & Crime are cheaper if you're looking for Tell tale type of game (like Life it's Strange)

How much did you like vanilla Witcher 3?

imo Blood and Wine > Soma + Life is Strange. A lot of people like LiS, I thought it was ok, the story of Witcher is just on a whole different level.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either choice. Life is Strange is phenomenal, it's a wonderfully human cult indie movie in video game form, and took 2nd place in the SteamGAF GOTY poll for a reason (mostly cause I intimidated everyone into voting for it.)

If you're a Sci-Fi fan then SOMA is essential, it's a horror game that's possibly better if you make the monsters non-hostile, as it's main source of horror is just the subject matter it explores. The exploration of the meaning of existence, consciousness, humanity and what makes a life worth living will stick with you for a long, long time.

Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, of course, is more Witcher 3 goodness.

I haven't played Blood and Wine (or Witcher 3 for that matter), nor have I played SOMA, so my opinion here doesn't count for much, but Life is Strange is one of the absolute best games I have ever played. Everyone needs to experience it.

Hmmmm, I still havent bought anything so far but I want to but there is to much "want" and to little "fund". Eyeing GTA but 35 euro is a lot.

That's a good point. It'll probably be cheaper during the Winter Sale.

Thanks guys! SOMA and LiS it is, then. Didn't know LiS almost got SteamGAF GOTY, now I'm genuinely hyped.

Bought Tennis Elbow. Asked for a refund 5 minutes later. Holy shit that game is bad. With the same 13€ I then went playing tennis with a friend. Way better.

Is it bad? I've bought it but yet to play it, downloaded some mods though

For first time in a Steam sale I've only purchased one game! F1 Race Stars.
Enough to say I miss the daily deals :-(

I've done great this year. I've managed not to buy anything from GoG and Steam this summer. I think the daily deals not being present have helped.

2nd regret of the sale: Dragon Fin Soup

This game has a very charming art style and in theory it should be good

That's mostly positive
but the reality is that the controls are weird and clunky (even in the options menu, oh my god the options menu), the UI can be annoying as well as the constant prompt about you being sure you want to every time you try to enter a house/step on a teleporter/talk to a merchant and the game still has crash to desktop bugs which were reported last year.
I spent 4 hours with it before hitting that bug. Now every time I try to to talk to that NPC to begin that quest, I end up at my desktop, with the constant reminder that I can't refund the game staring me right in the eye

I'd also add the lack of a proper tutorial to at least ease you into the game but, heh, at this point who cares.

I'm still waiting for my Steam key since I own it on PSN.

Why? Assuming the retail copy was legitimately obtained what's the problem.

It's a weird thing.
Ripping keys from cheaper regions at retail space feels dirty to me.
But before Russian bear was locked in its cage, I didn't have any problems doing the same digitally.

Yeah Dragon Fin Soup sucks. It controls like an unholy abomination of trying to please KBAM and controllers at once and it's not fun on either.

I can see there being SOME appeal for console users since there aren't many games like it on console, but for PC there's like a dozen better roguelikes to play. And even then most roguelikes run on like toasters so you'd have to be like a hardcore console fanboy that faints at the sight of a PC to really get anything out of it.

Thanks for the write-up and reminder, always meant to pick this up once it goes cheap. Now I did. :)

after stardew I'm contemplating Bioshock and Bioshock 2.

Got 'em on PS3, and would prefer 'em on PS4, but for some reason I want the PC versions. Not sure about the DLC though and would rather not spend $2.50 on it. Ah, choices..

If you buy B1 + B2 + DLC you get remastered free on PC.

Yeah, Tennis Elbow is shit. Hope I can get a refund for it without refunding other games

EDIT: Refund request sorted easy enough, best thing Steam introduced.
