The whole "extremely rare" talking point is extremely annoying and irrelevant. Yes it's extremely rare to COINCIDENTALLY encounter another player, but when you can name star systems and individual locations on the planet surface and have access to ships that can easily traverse the universe, it's not all that difficult.
But no one is asking that. We just want a simple yes or no if it's possible to see another player. Not interact with them, but simply see them.

There is mp. Online functions worked the same for everyone.
Sean said for years that this game had multiplayer functionality where you can see other players and play with your friends, and then he tweets that this is a single player game mere hours before the game release and that means we were all stupid for expecting multiplayer functionality?

He's avoiding saying the feature he touted over and over is or isn't present though. We always knew encounters should be rare, but the fact was still stated that there is player encounters. He is trying to run away from that without being definitive about his claims.

This is the thing that gets me. Sean knew the streamers were trying every which way to see each other yesterday. It would have been as simple as saying "Guys, your're wasting your time. You can't see other players." But no, he's got to keep it all vague and inconclusive despite the flood of repeated questions in his twitter feed and across Reddit/GAF etc..

We are in the context of the metagame of discovering everything in the universe. A bit like how everyone was playing Noby Noby Boy together.
Now some people are saying the game might have regional servers because not both of the streamers are in the US XD

Because I'm assuming they coordinated this and weren't just aimlessly wondering and happened to bump into each other.
Regardless of the exact number, it was explicitly stated that the universe is so large the chances of meeting someone else was practically zero, especially as players would likely all start at the edge of the galaxy millions of miles away from other players.
Now it turns out the universe isn't so large, and players are all within a few planets from eachother.
To top it off because it was possible to generate 18 quintillion planets the chances of two players seeing the exact same thing was rare, and Sean even commented that there have been 10 million different species discovered in one day, yet players are seeing the exact same animals....
The only fitting title for the next OT really.

It's not a 1 in 18 quintillion chance.
Even assuming there are 18 quintillion planets in the galaxy where you start, you can't potentially spawn at any of them. Some people would spawn next to the center and make one single jump and beat the game. Yawn.
No, everyone probably spawns the same radius away from the center of the galaxy, and on planets deemed survivable for newbies. Much, much fewer valid spawn points than you're implying.
If there are 100 million possible starting planets, and 1 million people are playing the game, then on average players will start out 100 planets apart from each other. Some much further, some much closer.
And couple that with the fact that everyone is trying to get to the same center, and it starts to look pretty damn likely that people are going to be able to meet up.
And it turns out that they did. The comments about it being rare/impossible were a gross misrepresentation.

Come on, there's no need to imply things to defend a developer. He can do it himself just explaining the whole situation loud and clear on twitter, YouTube, his webpage, Reddit, here on NeoGAF, or wherever fits him better.
100% Agree, the game have flaws, it not the second coming of jesus. But the critical players maybe are being hasty about this feature? The critical players would be happy if MP is a lá Dark Souls with blueprints of the player? Maybe they are things that critical players don't know yet about the game? Don't know.

The naming stuff is linked to online too so if they were offline when they named stuff last night, maybe their data didn't upload.
At which number does multiplayer become realistic again to you? 400 billion star systems? That's how much Elite Dangerous has.

You know how this wouldn't be a shit storm? Two ways:
1. Months in advance before the game came out: "You can NOT see other players, you will NEVER know what you look like. The only interaction you'll have with other players is naming things"
2. Yesterday on Twitter: "People, there is NO player to player direction interaction, we couldn't end up doing it. You can NOT see each other in game, only interaction is naming things"
Apparently, people are entitled for expecting clear messaging for games they paid $60 for.

In one interview he said you can meet up with your friends. That's technically true but highly improbable though. He was asked to give a yes or no answer to a question that is a lot more complicated.
It's remarkable how many of us knew very early on what type of experience this was yet people keep showing up claiming they were sold on this being a multiplayer game and that you could meet up and play with your friends like it was a regular thing.

Planets need to be hosted locally. There's no way they can afford to host millions of server instances for a game that is 99.9% single player according to probabilities.
I would assume that each planet discovery gets saved server side and the local instance synchronizes with the server at some point. But how much data actually synchronizes? Probably just basic things such as species names. If be surprised if terrain deformation is synchronized because then all of that data would have to be stored server side.
Can you imagine how much data it would take to store millions of planet sized instances complete with terrain deformation? I don't even think Petabytes of storage would be enough.

A short aside:
This reminds me very much of the Destiny "you see those mountains? you can go there" debacle. People were linking interviews about overstated promises/features, and the reality of what was released. The defense on Gaf was also verrry similar. It was also along the lines of "things change in game development," or "it's not even a big deal, why do you even care? get over it" or "I don't see how that's dishonest/shady."
It's weird that some gamers go through such lengths to defend a game they like. You can love a game and be critical of the devs behind it. It's not hard. And just like Destiny, this comes down to a lack of communication up until launch.

He said in interviews that players could kill each other. He also said that we could see other players, but he was pretty clear that the possibility was next to zero. He probably thought people wouldn't get the ability to try this in such a massive universe. Now people have caught him lying, and he simply refuses to give us a straight answer, and he probably won't. This shouldn't go unnoticed by the community.

Those two combined can be interpreted as him saying it's not a multiplayer experience because players are unlikely to find one another.
I'm not saying he's lying, but he do needs to sharpen up a bit in how to deliver messages that aren't open to interpretation.

Because the fact that nobody knows is a problem. People would like it answered. If the developers just put a quick Tweet online with it, then it is over. But they don't for some reason.
