So, any starting tips for us PC players when we finally get our hands on it? Please feel free to spoiler tag anything you feel necessary.
Hm... my tips based on how I started out:
- Maybe wait to redeem the pre-order ship until you have learned the hyperdrive and antimatter recipes. This actually didn't wind up messing with my progression really - I just bought a different ship before leaving the first system, then wound up scanning the planets from space to find the quest locations to receive them - but it's not really worth messing with as the pre-order ship doesn't do much for you anyway. I'd only redeem it after getting those recipes just to get rid of the notification that you have it available.
- Resist the urge to mine everything around you. Resources abound everywhere and you have limited space. Focus on looking for resources you need to activate upgrades for your equipment as you get them, as well as high-value items (in the early game, this is generally neutral elements like Gold, or trade items).
- For upgrades, linking the upgrades to their base item seems to improve their effect. This is why the inventory shapes will look weird at first with slots being in different positions. Keep this in mind when upgrading your ship, as the core components of a ship cannot be destroyed and rebuilt in a different slot. I don't really know how this works on the exosuit - you can link certain upgrades to base components (like linking the life support upgrades to the life support base), but the jetpack for example is behind two other core components and can't be moved, so it doesn't seem like you could ever link jetpack upgrades to it.
- Don't wait forever to upgrade your ship's shields or phase beams. At some point you're going to get scanned and attacked by hostile ships for carrying decent cargo, and they can mess you up pretty hard if you aren't prepared. For my part I feel like it is a lot easier to fight with the phase beam than the photon cannon. Also, upgrading the phase boost is a good investment because it helps you navigate around planets a lot better (your turn radius while boosting is a lot better).
- Don't be afraid to break into buildings and take on sentinels. It's worth breaking into facilities, and on some planets sentinels are outright hostile to begin with. They're also a good source of Titanium. Upgrading your shield and boltcaster can be a pretty good investment to make taking on sentinels a lot easier and scoring lots of Titanium (which is especially useful for repairing your shield during space combat).
- Let go of the idea of being a completionist. This game will break you. Sometimes it can be worth going after species discoveries for the units awarded for completing an entire planet, though, and this advances your journey milestone, which is a bit important for progressing into the actual meat of things later. But unless you actually want to spend the next ten years of your life scanning rocks, you just kind of need to accept that the universe is too big and the interesting moments too far apart for you to search every corner of every planet.
