There a number of people here that complain about some very odd things (more so for when TFA is brought up) but just because Star Wars is a thing again after so many years doesn't mean people should just automatically like it. They are works that are still subject to criticism like everything else. You guys just blow my mind.
In 2012 you were all thinking to yourselves, man I guess we will never see another Star Wars move again. That's too bad, what could have been.
Here we are just 4 years later and we are getting so much more from Lucasfilm, and Disney.
I see too much complaining. Would you have preferred that they never made these films? My god just appreciate them for what they are. Its not life and death. Its continuation and in some cases an expansion on a series most of us loved growing up.
Again I remember very distinctly reading an article back in 2012 were George said there will never be another Star Wars film, and that really bummed me out.
Some of you complain about everything.
looks well made
but the complete obsession with the death star is becoming almost comical now

Just add me to that as well. But with perhaps a little more positivity.I'm forced to agree with the naysayers: Outside of some classic Star Wars visuals it feels like every other Sci-Fi Action film that's come out in the last 5 years.
I hope I'm wrong, I really do.
Has everyone sufficiently reviewed and scored the movie based on the trailer?
Feel like we need a review thread for this movie already.
I thought Disney doesn't interfere with Lucasfilm's decisions, same approach they take with Marvel.
i had a pretty fascinating convo with a guy that is a mutual acquaintance and one of the things we talked about was this film. Works in the industry and said that while Disney definitely were not thrilled with the product Edwards put out that they already were prepared for all this and Disney is the one company that can afford to not just reshoot scenes but pretty much shoot a whole film again if need be.
Bleh it looks ok, but the dialogue is wonky as fuck. Honestly doesn't look all that better than the prequel trilogy.
I'm convinced I'll never be excited for this movie. It just feels like any other big blockbuster film with some Star Wars iconography on top of it. There's the TIE Fighters again, the Death Star, the robot with the chances for survival, ya x-wings crashing into Star Destroyer shots,Mon Mothma and Vader cameos wooo.
That'll probably be enough for most, but I'm infinitely more interested in Ep.VIII and its promise of new adventures, weird places, and interesting ideas that Rian Johnson and co can conjure up.
I have high hopes for VIII, but am also expecting a ton of backlash when Johnson inevitably doesn't reinvent the sci-fi wheel.
It's definitely better presented and probably will be a better movie. I'm saying it's about as closest to the prequels as this new batch of movies will get so far. The dialogue is wonky, the production isn't as tight as the mainline movies. It just feels a bit like a throwaway movie that doesn't really bring anything interesting to the table. I'm hope I'm wrong on this.Maybe you should rewatch because this looks like ESB in comparison to the prequels. I agree the dialogue is still way off though.

I hate this line of thinking, that a film can only be worthwhile if it adds something to it's encompassing franchise. Are any number of the classic films of cinema "throwaway movies" because they don't exist as part of a franchise?
Its not an enviable task. Everyone's looking for two contradictory things. They want Star Wars, the franchise, so that means Jedi vs the Dark Side, lightsabers and lasers, robots and aliens, X-Wings vs TIE Fighters, Skywalkers and the Force, John Williams and Ben Burtt. But they also want something NEW as well. Its hard to remember now, but try to think back to Empire Strikes Back. It was still Star Wars, but suddenly the galaxy was larger. There were strange new locations, new kinds of enemies and creatures, the Force was solidified as this Zen like essence by Yoda, Vader was Luke's father, it was a huge expansion and explosion on the Star Wars mythos. When I think of ESB, I always think about Bespin. Its this beautiful, high fantasy place with a very particular style of clothes, population, economy, and politics, and yet it felt a-piece with the Star Wars we know from ANH. It made the galaxy of Star Wars seems so big and interesting.
I think ultimately the success of Ep.VIII to my mind is to somehow combine the creativity and imagination of the first six Star Wars movies(yes, even the not-good prequels) with the level of competent filmmaking craft Rian Johnson/Lucasfilm/ILM can do. I think anything else would be a disservice to waht Star Wars stood for orginally, which was giving audiences something they never seen before, using old archetypes and storytelling choices to make it feel iconic and timeless.
I just don't get "not feeling this" Not feeling what? Its a Star Wars movie, what gives you feels? What are you looking for?

I groan at the fact that most of the upcoming SW games are still in that era.
You got a new era of complete unknowns guys - do something with it.
Star Wars is a science fiction fantasy and it already explored leafs of new ideas and possibilities. There's been 7 films, 2 TV series, and loads of novels and comics. The universe is very well defined and people love it. You can't go changing everything just for the sake of being new.No, but in all fairness, they can be considered to be "throwaway movies" if they don't have an individual sense of spirit or uniqueness that allows them to stand apart from other films, quite unlike Force Awakens which many people found to be rather bland and derivative, even in a franchise like Star Wars that borrowed from so many other movies as a means of inspiration.
Science fiction at it's heart as a genre is about exploring new ideas and possibilities, diving headfirst into the unknown in search of the unfamiliar. Not re-heating up yesterday's cinematic left-overs and adding just enough new spices to give give off the illusion that you're actually serving up something fresh and original.
The original trilogy WAS Star Wars from 1977 to 1999. It is also much more widely critically acclaimed and uncontroversially appreciated by fans than the prequels. How I feel:

The problem is that nothing they've shown about Rogue One is really all that compelling outside of some neat visuals here and there. The characters don't look all that interesting, the story is going to lead to a place where we already more or less know the final result, and of course I've already mentioned the wonky dialogue as well doesn't really do much in the way to suggest this movie is worthwhile. The movie could be about Dexter Jettster and could be a worthwhile movie if it was done right, but nothing in Rogue One has really been grabbing me so far in the trailers. I like some of the scenery shown in the trailers and promotional materials, and the new Stormtrooper designs are really good, but that's it.I hate this line of thinking, that a film can only be worthwhile if it adds something to it's encompassing franchise. Are any number of the classic films of cinema "throwaway movies" because they don't exist as part of a franchise? If Rouge One is a compelling film, then that's all it needs to bring something interesting to the table.
