I watched this again yesterday and it's still bad.
The Squad was activated immediately after Incubus showed up and destroyed that subway. The military people wanted the guy who aims good, a psycho girl with a baseball bat, a human crocodile, a guy who throws boomerangs, and fire dude to take this metahuman out. This wasn't supposed to be some black ops thing: they were meant to kill other metahumans. Now, when they actually get assembled, Waller tells them that they are meant to rescue HVT-1 and that's it. Side note: Waller says that she's the only person that matters in that city in front of her subordinates.
So, on one hand, we see that the military people want to use the Squad to kill metahumans, but then almost immediately after that, Waller says another thing. The audience is given two different objectives from two different groups and it's never really acknowledged. It's confusing.
When Flag rescues Waller in the office building and right before she murders her team, she tells Flag that he wouldn't have made it that far without their help, but the movie shows it differently. Up until then, the Squad isn't doing anything that the military couldn't. Harley is killing those putties with her baseball bat. Boomerang is kicking them and slicing them with his boomerangs. Waller even says that those putties can take a headshot and keep going, but we see those putties get headshot and die. Flag does it to one and that's the basis of Deadshot's big action moment. The first time a helicopter got shot down, we don't see who did it, but I think it's safe to assume that the putties did it. The putties are shown to be using guns. What's stupid is that not all of them do so we can still get some melee action. Speaking of the action, it's bland and forgettable.
Now that I've seen the Joker again, I definitely don't like him. He's still superfluous to the movie and Leto's performance seems like he's took Ledger's performance and turned it up a notch. I still think that the Suicide Squad is pretty much unnecessary given the threat. The main villains are defeated with bombs. They needed a covert, black-ops type of thing for this group, not a powerful witch.
I did miss some things on my first go, namely the reason why the putties were taking Flag. It's because the Enchantress was afraid of him. Why they don't kill him instead of trying to kidnap him, I don't know. Again, what the people say and what we see is vastly different. I like Diablo a lot more. I didn't pick up that the house he walked out of in his introduction is the house he burned his family in. Still, him calling the Squad his family is too much of a stretch. It was not earned at all. Katana is still useless and her last minute backstory was hilarious. Boomerang coming back (because he's a boomerang) was completely unmotivated and unacknowledged.
When the Enchantress shows the Squad what they really want, Deadshot really wants to kill Batman. That doesn't really fit his arc. He wants to be with his daughter and wants her to know that he's not a piece of shit. That's the whole reason why he wants to continue through with the mission, but what he really wants is to kill Batman? Come on.
