[SPOILER THREAD] Suicide Squad

You say it's played for laughs. I say its intent is to sell Rope Guy as a piece of shit, so when he gets his head blown off, the audience is okay with it. I don't know. Tumors of him being a rapist could be just that, but you can imagine how they'd want to paint him apart from the other prisoners.

It's not a tumour!

When the Enchantress shows the Squad what they really want, Deadshot really wants to kill Batman. That doesn't really fit his arc. He wants to be with his daughter and wants her to know that he's not a piece of shit. That's the whole reason why he wants to continue through with the mission, but what he really wants is to kill Batman? Come on.

That was truly awful, and the only explanation I can think of is that they thought they shouldn't have a cliched "happy family" scene three times in a row.

I'm not saying rope guy is a sexist and he should be ashamed. He's a fucking dick, he's a bad guy, we know he's a shit person, not my point.
I'm agreeing with thecouncil on this matter, that it was played of as a part the audience should laugh at, by the filmmakers with "she had a mouth". The other points, I did not mentioned so I will not defend those.
I particularly did not see the major issue with Bats punching Harley in that segment, same as I mentioned earlier I wouldn't have had a problem with Boomerang if one of the guards he punched was a women, a guard is a guard, nothing sexist about it.

So it's only sexist because it was for laughs. But Boomerang punched a guy and it was played for laughs.

Who cares if it was played for laughs or not? People need to stop using this simple black and white logic that a character's actions and thoughts reflect its creator's. So what if Slipknot was sexist and punched a woman (OMG) in the face? Does that make the movie sexist that it didn't portray it as a terrible thing? This is a film that centers around characters that range from morally ambiguous to flat out reprehensible, so the caviler, casual manner in which violence and political incorrectness is portrayed is just in line and, tonally, should be expected.

So it's only sexist because it was for laughs. But Boomerang punched a guy and it was played for laughs.

Now you're just being willfully ignorant. I already mentioned Boomerangs situation not being comparable. Slipknots punch was played of for laughs with the butt of the joke being "lol, he punched a woman for speaking to him".
Boomerang did not punch the guards cause they were men, he fought them cause he's a crazy ass caged animal that just got set loose. It had nothing to do with gender.

You can have sexists characters in a movie, with it being part of the character, we've had tons of them. But when it's played for laughs, it most definitely is the creators choice. And it is a choice, creators are free to choose as such, I am free to call it out.

Well, there's that and the fact if he killed Batman, he would have been with his daughter. End result is the same.

Can't have bad guys be bad guys, tho.

They should've shown him being with his daughter then. Cut out the middle man.

I think it was less that he punched her because she spoke to him, but that he punched her for bad talking him. I don't think he did it because she was a woman. If it were a man, he would have punched him.

Seems like you're just applying an arbitrary double standard for the side of your argument. This is the same character that was literally blown up for laughs yet somehow him punching a nameless character is what bothers you. I can guarantee if it hadn't been a woman you wouldn't have cared, or so much as even noticed.

I've tried to explain my position as best I can, but you still reduce it to this, which is not true, this is not what I am saying at all. I cannot explain it any better than I have so far.

If the guard had been a guy, Slipknot wouldn't have punched him? And the joke of "he had a mouth" wouldn't have been the same?

But it wasn't a guy. It was a conscious choice by the filmmakers to get a laugh out of the crowd. That's my issue with it.

And hell, this whole thing has gotten bigger than I think it deserves to be, it's a small part of a mediocre movie, it does not deserve me typing so much about it. But it really does not need to be waved of as nothing either.

Relevant.

I loved that Will Shit scene where he just shoots and shoots and shoots and shoots and shoots.

Not sure why..

Because it was a good moment in the movie?

Also is that a typo or are you being weird about Will Smith?

So...

Incubus shows up, Task Force X is activated, and neck bombs are placed. Flagg and June Moon infiltrate under the subway Incubus is at, and prepare a devastating bomb with a 2 second timer to take Incubus out. Enchantress is brought out, she leaves the bomb with Flagg and joins Incubus, who can heal her heart stab wounds inflicted by Amanda as Flagg (stopping the countdown at 1 second left) lets Amanda know Enchantress scrammed.

Flagg then leaves the bomb behind and leaves the city to pick up the rest of the Suicide Squad and Joker gets the guy who made the neck bombs. Flagg brings the Suicide Squad by helicopter to rescue Amanda; the plan, fly to Amanda's building rooftop, pick her up, and leave. They get shot down and survive, and walk their way to the building instead, taking out a few popsicles along the way.

The reach the building, find more popsicles in the vents and take them out. Diablo actually is useful at roasting more popsicles. They then reach Amanda, who takes out her own agents due to them not having clearance. Flagg shrugs, used to it. They escort Amanda to the roof without incident and other than a run-in with Joker (who simply wants to take Harley, and uses jamming signal by bomb maker to keep Amanda blowing up Harley) who picks up Harley and then takes off, they encounter no more popsicles or obstacles. Helicopter comes as planned and takes Amanda away, with the Suicide Squad's orders simply being to wait for the next helicopter for evac.

So literally, the reason why soldiers are escorting the guy who shoots good, the girl with a baseball bat, the guy who climbs good, the guy with boomerangs, crocodile man, and the guy with fire powers who doesn't want to kill... the reason they are sent with neck bombs is to escort Amanda from the top floor to the rooftop so she can then ride out in a helicopter.

No plan for stopping Enchantress was ever created by Amanda or the generals backing her. Good thing the big bomb was left under the subway, so that random soldier that was escorting the group could use it to blow up Incubus. All the random soldier even needed was crocodile man to keep underwater popsicles busy and someone to distract Incubus to be standing on a particular spot. As for Enchantress, she could have been stopped at any time by crushing her heart. Her superweapon just needed to be bombed.

I dunno, Bats punching Harley was pretty funny but mostly because she's fucking crazy and it was completely absurd for her to try and kill him with a knife after having just crashed a car into a river and gone through the goddamn windshield

I think it's funny because he just saved her life and then punches her.

Considering that Slipknot was meant to be a serial rapist, it puts that scene in perspective.
It does, but that's not in the movie.

Basically all of this. The Suicide Squad is just superfluous.

It's blue in SS and JL but yellow in BvS. I like to think that it's just a case of him not having that good of a grip on it, uncontained unfiltered raw Speedforce energy but eventually it turns yellow as he gains more experience.

Huh, interesting. I wonder if they'll stick to that.

it wasn't yellow in BvS. the cam footage was black and white

Just saw it, pretty terrible. The plot was just horrible.

And I always assumed this was a prequel to the other movies and this was "young Joker"... I was shocked that it takes place AFTER BvS.

That scene bothered me... wasn't it completely out of character for Batman to throw her on the hood of the batmobile and then kiss her while she's unconscious? Batman is Bill Cosby now?
I walked out halfway through it anyway through... people getting possessed creeps me out. Will Smith was the only interesting character.

...CPR?

He was performing CPR because he thought her breathing stopped.

On one hand, it was just a crappy attempt at CPR

On the other...Batman is a total perv, so I DUNNO

I thought it was cool actually. That entire scene complete with his quick reaction to her response was like straight out of the Arkham games. I dunno why but something about how quickly he got his hand on her throat and didn't say anything was straight out of a cutscene of Arkham knight lol

Also the KO punch had the theater laughing.

If it had looked like normal CPR it would've been good, definitely felt Arkham-y with that quick counter grab

And the KO punch was funny, whadaya want? Harley's fucking nuts

Oh shaddap

It was CPR lol that's why he checks her pulse. Harley turned it into a kiss because she was fucking with Batman

How did you come to the conclusion that he was kissing her?

I already forget. Saw it 2 hours ago. Did Diablo die?

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Had an enjoyable time, didn't drag out for me, although the fight scenes were kinda boring. The critisism on Leto were kinda harsh. Ben Affleck kills it. The Flash cameo is nice. Would've been nice if I didn't got spoiled with that. Will Smith is fine, so is Margot Robbie.

I think the only parts of the movie I disliked severly are Cara Delevigne, Katana and the dumb villain.

I loved the scene Waller shot those guys.

When Waller went on her killing spree the audience got really into it at my showing. Big laughs for, "That is one mean lady."

Still have no idea what purpose Katana or Killer Croc served.

I saw it. It was okay... The beginning of the film started well, but once they actually got to the plot it where it fell down. Some weird cuts and edits like when Harley first made her joke after being released and the second one where she gets the purse in the trailer didn't flow.

Enchantress's motivation wasn't clear to me. She wanted to destroy the world because she thought people worshipped machines? The part where Moon transformed in the middle of the night and tried to get her heart back was weird too editing-wise. Really, once Waller actually called for Task Force X I was like you're calling them for this? Doesn't seem like the situation you'd want to use them for. Batman, WW, Katana, and Flash and some soldiers would've gotten that done. From the my exposure to them in JL and the animated movie the government is making them do something a little dirty so that would explain why you wouldn't get a cape for it.

Deadshot was likeable, Diablo too, but Katana was forgettable and so was Croc. From what others told me of Waller I thought she had some real foul leverage over some of these people. I was disappointed, but I do say that Viola Davis was a great choice. The backstory on the characters was good, Joker being shoved in without really contributing to the plot was whack. Thought Diablo turning into a fiery skeleton was weird. Harley I disliked more than like. Most of the jokes came off weak, but I think she sort of got the character right.

Also, why did Waller shoot those people in that room? That shit came out of nowhere and then Flagg rags on Deadshot's morals and he just accepts that shit.

I was confused too about the dancing

also, awkward "dancing" by Enchantress. why???

Oh so I wasn't imagining Enchantress just borderline belly dancing lol

What the fuck was up with Enchantresses dancing CGI body?

I'm not convinced that Enchantress' dancing was trying to be humorous at all.

It looked like she was having a seizure.

I need some Entrantress dancing gifs now!

She reminded me of Aaliyah in Queen of the Damned

For a week I couldn't pinpoint what it was, but now I remember : she reminded me of the dancing spawns

I thought pre-bail Enchantress was one of the most interesting characters of the movie. Not sure why she fought with swords at the end, though. Oh man, that ending. What a lame kindergarden trick she fell for.

Yeah, the film didn't offend me. It just sat between mediocre and poor.

I probably enjoyed it more than Batman v Superman. It was more consistent, I found, and unlike BvS it had a few likeable characters (Alfred is really the only one in BvS, imo).

The Joker was disappointing. He did have a good Joker moment when he threatened that dude's wife, or left Harley to drown. But most of his character was in his relationship with Harley, and that was weak. The entire point of their relationship in the animated series and comics is that the Joker doesn't love or even really like Harley, but keeps her around for her usefulness. Based on deleted scenes, and the novelization of the movie, it seems like the reshoots were in part to make their relationship less twisted. The Joker's design was also bad - the tattoos didn't bother me, but the makeup, hair colour and lipstick were awful.

I laughed a fair few times, though. But that was, in part, at the movie, not with it.

I have to admit I also thought Batman was kissing her out of nowhere. Just a poorly made scene.

Overall, it was a flawed movie and clear tat it was cut to ribbons by re-edits. but for a big, dumb action movie, it was ok. Glad I waited and saw it on $5 Tuesdays at my local theater.
