Final Fantasy XV - 50 min video

"...Whatever"

This feels like it needs another half year to year in the oven. Graphics totally need another pass and things just cleaned up in general.

Having mulled it over I think I'm fairly pleased with the footage. It looks like it'll be fun and in some odd ways it feels very Final Fantasy (the tombs mostly).

My biggest concern now is that Famitsu played this for 25 hours to get to that point? Is this the MGSV of the Final Fantasy franchise, where everything is filler exploration between short bursts of narrative. I had enough of that already with Xenoblade X.

Others played through this in ~3 hours. Famitsu apparently tried to do all the optional stuff as well.

The Ifrit boss theme sounds amazing. I'm just not sure why the hell Tabata thought spoiling 30 seconds of the end of the game was a good idea. Even without the spoilers, you can infer a lot about the game from that little clip.

But that bit is literally from the beginning of the game. Spoilers or no, you'll see that scene when you start the game.

You mean Ifrit.

Damn you people are fast ;)

But the entire flash forward wasn't a good idea. It doesn't even make narrative sense; it's just a common trope that Tabata threw into the pot for no reason. It would've been better to start off with something that actually makes sense, like the flashback scenes or
Noctis going to sleep
. It kind of makes me worried for some of Tabata's other storytelling decisions...
particularly the leaked ones.

I would hope Ifrit isnt an end plot device. I mean it would be fresh not involving Bahamut I guess...but just used to seeing Ifrit, Shiva, and Ramuh early on.

That's probably what they mean. It's a weird framing device, I hope it'll make sense in the context.

Exactly this. Final Fantasy games are great when they start off small and build up to something larger. A girl riding Magitek in the snow. A soldier caught up with a group of terrorists. A knight stealing a crystal.

Noctis and the gang pushing the car would've been an iconic opening. Tabata didn't need to add a shit ton of fire, bloom and flash to tell people "hey, this game will be good eventually." It was probably a moment of weakness on his part. It makes me doubt his confidence as a director.

Kinda that, but also, who's gonna get excited about fighting Ifrit - if it is Ifrit of course. I mean... it's Ifrit. You know?

I think your last sentence is kinda pushing it. I don't know how you assume all of that. I actually have no issue if that's how the game wants to open. Because it just "is"

I believe it's heavily edited.

It definitely is, some of the later scenes are chopped to shit. For example, one of the characters calls Noctis, "Your Majesty" which implies the father is dead but we don't see anything stating as such in the video. So they cut out that part.

one of the most awkward transitions from flash forward to present i've ever seen lmao

edit:lmao @ the tattoo guys voice and performance

That's because they clearly edited out the remainder of the in media res/flash forward prologue. The whole video is full of edits like that.

And, I agree about Gladio's English VA - it's dreadful. He's flat and has no real emotional range at all, opting for typical tough guy stoic whereas in the original Japanese he's chipper, friendly and warm. He's the worst of the main 4 for me.

Square-Enix definitely had balls showing off the Xbox One version for over half the video. The IQ and performance of that version really does not present an enticing picture for the game.

Yeah, I didn't really like that. I was hoping Stand By Me would've played during a more meaningful scene.

I loved it. As I mentioned in another post, it really brought me back to times where my friends and I had to push a car through a road. Man, the feels...

Yea. PS4 version needs a bit more polish no doubt but overall it looks decent enough. That X1 footage looked rough.

I do believe it was maybe Nomura or something who said that SE is really focusing on and optimizing the PS4 version of their games this gen. I don't think the X1 version will be shit, but it's clear their focus is PS4. Considering Japan etc.

You guys had to do that, lol? I can't even imagine pushing a car; then again, I'm very weak. xD

It's understandable, though. In a way, you and your friends can be like Noctis and co. Heck, even some of the footage reminded me of my friends and I. My best friend is practically like the Prompto to my Noctis.

Well, it's definitely just my opinion. But it's how I usually take framing devices that don't have a textual purpose (good framing devices: Forrest Gump, Titanic, How I Met Your Mother)

The entire purpose of this framing device is to say, "hey, this game is really cool!"

BTW, Tabata said that the dungeons would be more like the ones from FF I per example, and you can see that in this video. Their mini map shows many paths.

Yeah, we ran out of gas during a road trip.

Now I wish Stand by Me was magically playing in the background during that time. :p

But yeah. Besides getting tired as all hell, it was a fun experience. We were joking and laughing all the way. Two of the guys actually stopped pushing, like Prompto said he would, and the other two guys kept pushing without knowing it. :p

EDIT: I would be Prompto, because I'm always taking photos of EVERYTHING during trips. :p

I feel like everything up until the repair shop could have gone a lot smoother if it were just a CG cutscene. No awkward loading screen, no awkward, disjointed dialog during the boring car pushing, more change for interesting camera angles and shots, Stand By Me would sound not as out-of-place, we could have gotten some good, pretty zoom-ins on faces to introduce the main cast, etc.

But i feel like we're not supposed to like CG/cutscenes anymore. :/

It's memories like those that last a lifetime. :) I almost wish that I could experience this now, lol.

I'm excited about the photo feature in XV. Do we know if we're able to take photos at any time? I forgot how that feature will work.

Tabata mentioned that only Prompto takes pictures. But if I remember correctly, he mention that they would look into ways for the player to take their own pictures.

I watched about a minute of the video and closed it. I can't believe they spoiled
the time skip in the very first scene of the game.
I wonder if this means the rest of those 4chan leaks are true.

Maybe the whole
time skip
thing isn't really important? Perhaps it is not one of the game's main plot twists. If they feel confident to put that at the very start of the game, then they must have a lot of heavier stuff under their sleeves.

As someone who's not aware of what leaks you're talking about, I was willing to just take that scene as face value, aka "I have no idea what just happened but I'm willing to play the game and see how it gets to that point." Its really hard to come to some kind of conclusion from that first minute. I wouldn't call it "spoiling."

...Unless YOU know what is actually happening because of the leaks in which case gtfo I don't want to hear it.

I'm confused, how did they spoil anything if people didn't read the leaked spoilers? Most people would be unaware of what was going on, right? I didn't read them and had no idea what was happening.

It would make a lot of sense if we're completely misjudging this scene based on the leaks, and it is just a regular story fight
post-timeskip
, and there's still a good 25-30% of the game after it.

It just seems really weird to me that they'd throw away brand new character models for one small section of the game. And it's also, generally, really bad form to have a cold open of the end of the game, unless you're doing it to screw with the player's expectations.
(Lufia, Dragon Quest 6, etc)

The only thing that's keeping me from believing this is that we know the development has been troubled to the point where expecting the best case scenario seems naive.

I love how at the very beginning at the bottom it says: "Main Character design: Tetsyua Nomura" As if they had to put his name somewhere on the title screen :P

The game looks empty. The sidequests are completely devoid of any personality. It's like the Assassins Creed 1 of open world RPGs. A blank slate with plenty of potential but not one you should jump right into on the first installment.

Except I feel like there won't be a direct sequel to the type of game this is.

In a world where Witcher 3 exists FFXV just seems pointless, effortless and sad.

Not even touching the visuals - just burn the Luminous Engine to the ground. It's obviously no good.

They really need to cut that cold open. It doesn't do anything and the crew pushing the car is a much better opening for the game.

That looks amazing so far. Sure a lil bit of work is needed, but my hype got even bigger. Can't wait for this game. I should have all my PC parts put together when they announce a PC version for the best experience.

Mmhm. Well, it's not uncommon of Final Fantasy to have some kind of boss-behind-the-boss. That, however, would put the opening scene at even larger odds.
Honestly even Zanarkand opening was bad and pointless.

He looks different though, like his redesigned father.

Honestly, that would be a more appealing main character. For me anyway. Maybe it's cuz I'm not getting any younger. They just should've ditched VsXIII completely. I don't understand the decision behind this weird frankengame they got going on. Noctics has this 10 year-old designer hairdo ffs.
