Final Fantasy XV - 50 min video

I'm about to puke......this fish eye reflection bullshit with water......is more disgusting then any graphical problem I have with the game period....this shit would actually drive me insane....the fact that a chunk of bar on the left and right don't display reflections but instead remove it.

please tell me this is intentional because he is fishing

However when they showed that most recent trailer with the Florence song.....the reflections in the water did the exact same shit

In the big gameplay vid this effect was much less pronounced when Noctis was angling in Duscae. Towards the edges of the screen the reflection faded out a little but is wasn't as abrupt as here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gje2nTPERAs
(starts 43:41)

Maybe it's one of the graphical bugs/inconsistencies they want to iron out in the coming 3 months?

The water seems to be using a very weird reflection technology. By itself it looks great, but it has some freaky effects. Watch the video and check the fishing section, when Noctis grabs the fish and shows it to the others, see the water reflection around the fish model.

WTF?

when he caught the fish and zoomed in (I'm skimming the 50 minute video now), you could see it really really badly on both sides of the screen but the initial cast into the lake was normal.....this has to be a bug or some dynamic thing. Hopefully it gets fixed

You see what happens when they don't let Matt play the game

The fish eye effect looks bad in the GIF but it doesn't actually seem to be that bad in the 52 minutes gameplay video.

Regardless, this is called 'optimization' so I hope that if they have the overhead to fix it, they can do it.

That is definitely a visual bug.

Well deserved!

That is definitely a visual bug.

Oh definitely. The shapes of models that are in front of water cause this effect. I think it was also very clear during the scene when the guys find out about the Niflheim invasion. Prompto's model causes this same effect on the background water.

Yeah, this was present in the Episode Duscae demo, also.

I'm not a tech guy, but I'm curious as what is the name of this technique, how they do it, and why it has this particular issue.
Pretty sure the screenspace reflections are deployed in the form of spheres near a reflective surface or something like that. This is to save cost and only render the reflections that are in the view of the camera for the player while ignoring the rest.

I am sure that this is a common technique and not something exclusive to FFXV.

Thank you!

It caught my eye, but it's not a dealbreaker for me when it comes to the visuals.

It's even more annoying if you known that the reflection problem was also in gameplay videos back in 2014. I didn't care back then because I thought it was a minor problem that devs can fix easily near launch.

almost 2 years later and the annoying water reflection is still there.

I'm not sure they can fix in 2 more months what they couldn't do in 2 years.

It won't be fixed. This is simple optimization technique. They can try to mask the effect to some extent like a lot of others do though.

I'm sure they can fix it if they want, but it's there on purpose for performance reasons.

you ruined everything

At least with what we have now with Luna, we know how long her Earlobes are :P
I'm sorry
I think it was just the lighting and resolution of the gif

It was nominated along with Dragon Quest Builders and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. There are plenty of RPGs this year.

Don't forget I am setsuna.
...
And Star Ocean :P

Square Enix vs Square Enix vs Square Enix: THE RECKONING

... Pretty much.

That odd water effect also happens in ARK: Survival.
You can see a reflection from your weapon in the water even though you're not in the water.

It's a downside of screenspace reflections.

I think Square Enix probably figured majority people haven't deactivated overscan on their TV's, and the edges of the image are cut off by the TV's zoom-in. So to them, the affect doesn't look as bad as it does on that particular TV, which has overscan deactivated, thus showing a pixel perfect properly sized image.

There are UI elements closer to the edge of the screen though.

Inappropriately so mind you. Anybody who has a TV that overscans by 10% will have all that cut off except the mini-map HUD. So if you actually look at the right side of the screen, the reflections begin to appear when the mini-map HUD shows up, which is about 10% offset in.

You might be saying, who the fuck still is still playing on TV's that overscans by 10%, yeah I know - but you'd be surprised. Especially when it takes 3 seconds to correct for it...

It reminds me of Valkyrie Chronicles, where you had that white fucking border on the image. People with overscan issues wouldn't see that [as much]. And it probably helped them with performance because they are technically rendering less.

Watching the video again without skipping
Is it just me
Or noctis' hair looks less dithered when he's wet?

And that stamina bar is really annoying

Game looks beautiful to me. If they only spend the extra time to fix bugs and polish the gameplay, and not even increase the fidelity of the graphics, I'd still be happy.

And yes, to me this looks better than Witcher 3 on PS4.

I'd much rather have the stamina bar than not have one. It was annoying not having any indication in the Duscae demo of when my sprint would run out. I don't even really see the point in limiting how fast you run anyway, though.

This is great news winner of gamescom best game. And it's not even polished yet. Happy for SE.

I can tell tabata has poured his soul into the game and engine for final Fantasy, I can't even imagine the task.

Legend of Zelda won best of gamescom

Final Fantasy had to beat Deus Ex

Best Role Playing Game
* Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (Square Enix)
* Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix)
* Final Fantasy XV (Square Enix)

That was the competition for the award.....enix against.....enix

whos wins!

dragon quest won best puzzle game........

Is it hot or is it cold?
Cardigan with shorts...

Sorry
Meant that it's annoying that it overlays on top of the character sometimes
Not that it exists
But I agree, I rather stamina be gone

Guys I think I have spent over 400 hours watching, playing, discussing FFXV. What's your count?

I mean this week I watched that 50 min video twice.

Lol

Stamina should will be gone if you equip sprint boots right?
Is that in the game?
Maybe just the running part?
Cuz doesn't stamina affects how long noct can stay elevated also?

10 years sound more impressive(or sad?) than 400 hours lol

I've watched the 50 min video five times! 2 on Youtube, and 3 on the Gamersyde version. :3

The opening with the guys pushing the car... Man, I LOVE IT.

This honestly. Having to bring back the franchise back to the top, make a game out of a mess that Nomura left, and having to do it all on a engine that is not suited for current consoles. Seems like the most impossible situation, but he still takes the time to try to be upfront with all of us. The sad thing is that if this doesn't do good I can see Square never allowing him to do another main title again.

2 months.

People here are going to obsessively examine every shaky cam, screenshot, and secondhand commentary for 2 whole months.

Because there is absolutely no chance in hell this game won't be a huge disappointment with the worst visuals ever.

I thought I grew a thick skin over stupid FF discussions, but here we are.
