Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

I like the feel of the guns. I never played TF1 but I'm surprised at the lack of need for traversal, seems easier to take points (and lives) by hiding in corners.

I wonder if they're listening to feedback from people who played TF1 or if they're just treating this as an entirely different game and aren't looking to recreate the first one.

This also feel somewhat exploitable.

If I see someone rodeo me I usually just sit and let it happen now, after they dismount spin and punch. They even get highlighted with an icon of your battery...so if you look at the start vs. the end I gained ~30% core and a shield for his trouble.
You can't hear the enemy pilots feet moving around while you are in the Titan, you just get an AI callout? What happened to all the cool sound design? I hate what they have done they have changed so much stuff which never ever needed changing.

Damn this game is SOOO GOOOOD!! Is like a little bit slower Advance Warfare but with titans, AI, moves fast, is agile, the grapling hook works well, jumping on titans (enemy or friendly) is amazing, calling a titan is amazing. The weapons are really good. Love the progression system. Everything! Been a FPS player since DOOM ad played them all and this is really great. I <3 it Going to play all day!

going to assume you didn't play the first game eh?

The people who didn't play Titanfall 1 are obvious. I feel bad for them, this is their first impression to Titanfall and it's CoD with mech killstreaks. Even if they love it like Matt, they really don't know what they're missing out on :(

But even then it's not a bad first impression lol. It's still better than the best of COD. It's fun. I can't deny that this tech-test isn't fun.

It's just that i played a hell of a lot of Titanfall 1. I was obsessed with it, so compared to that it's a really big letdown.

They need to make serious adjustments immediately.

Titanfall 2 going after the esports crowd. Mlg gaming huh.
I remember sucking at black ops 3 and would load up Titanfall 1 and feel like a boss.

I've gone from probably buying this to waiting and seeing, just based on people's feedback in this thread.

Loved Titanfall on PC. Really disappointed I can't try this myself.

Definitely havent heard them stomping around on top, was actually hoping it was just because it was beta, but have quickly lost faith in that idea, lol.

I made a list, yall. Who asked for these changes? Certainly no one who loved Titanfall.

  • No recharging titan shields
  • Limited titan loadout customization
  • Slower titan movement
  • Slower player movement
  • Removed and reduced NPC presence
  • Lower TTK
  • Rodeoing is now completely passive
  • Third person animations for things that used to be (awesome) first person animations
  • No titan timer
  • Scorestreaks instead of burn cards
  • No attrition
  • Glowing players

I also miss the bombastic presentation with more radio chatter, video popups and music. Everything feels so slow/muted compared to the first game.

Of all the things I figured Titanfall 2 being boring was not one of them; this is awful.

Its hard to believe that I may not even buy the sequel to my favorites FPS game. If the retail game is like this it will be DOA.

You can only hear them jumping OFF, not ON... Which is extremely dumb...

Reached level 10, playing a few more matches with my brother, then going back to R1 I guess. Some impressions from me below. Tried to write up new stuff, and go on the positive side.

Pros:
Tutorial is fun, but no titans in it.
Grapple is a nice addition, I don't think it'd work in R1.
Best fucking sliding in an FPS ever. BO3 was close judging by the beta, but this is just amazing. The length, the speed, the canted gun. An addition I expected more of in R2.
Nice new titan guns, Scorch main weapon, its trap, Ion laser are all fun additions.
Energy weapons for pilots give some good variety.
Levelling based on merits feels more natural to me than filling an xp bar. Makes me concentrate more on the objective too.
Networks is an interesting idea, can't wait to see how it works out in the long run.
AI hit reaction is certainly an upgrade. Grunt heads exploding is so awesome.
Reworked melee animations. The kick was so boring, the new uppercut looks so much better.
Pre-main menu music is pretty good.

Cons:
Lower TTK (why even introduce healthbars for this?)
Glowing enemy pilots
Depth of Field vignette
Glow effect (somehow R1 seems to be more clear on the visual side)
Decreased ADS FoV
No sidearms by default: Having 3 guns in R1 was such a blast, made me feel prepared for everything. This is like Stingers in MW2, wasting a slot on hunting for Killstreak Rewards.
Huge hitmarkers: What's the point? There is already a healthbar to see your damage. It's also hiding the beautiful gibs.
Medals popping up in the middle of screen for almost no reason. I killed a grunt? Got a medal, I must be fucking amazing. Yet no recognition of multikills.
Movement in general not as fluid, going back, R1 feels much more natural. Both for titan and pilots.
Alpha maps are way below R1 average quality. Boomtown is okay by me, but I dread every match on Homestead.
Stim nerf: The initial boost is amazing, but it wears off instantly.
Pilot looks locked to skills: Why even do this? (I wouldn't be surprised if it's just for the beta though. If not, have fun on 5v5 spectre matches.)
Predefined titans: Lot of the magic in R1 came from building my own titan, boosting it with each unlock and tweaking a bit. Ofc by now everyone uses the 2-3 best combinations, but the same is going to happen with the prebuilt ones on time imo.
Less AI, no grunt chatter, silence about Attrition Mode
The game is more focused on camping and playing it safe. In R1 I had no problem crossing the map on my favourite route. I was fast enought to avoid getting shot by pilots. Did not have anything to lose by dieing anyway.
3rd person animatons: I see no reason for these. Climbing into an Atlas, everything going dark, then the screens booting up one by one was iconic. Worst offender is the jumpship transition for less than a second. Assassinations take way too long too, and third person loses the brutality. It's rather hilarious now.
Amped weapons as killstreak rewards.
Rodeo rework with auto dismount: I loved juking people out of their titans. Now whenever I get a rodeo, I can sit back, just shoot the guy who took my cell, than take it back for the shields.

Currently unplayable on XBO in UK. Serious lag and connection issues

Same on PS4 in UK.

I spent a bit more time with it and warmed up to it a bit, after being crushingly disappointed initially. It's OK, I can't deny that it's not at least a bit of fun and I can see folks who didn't play Titanfall 1 really enjoying it, but... yeah :( I also never realised that they removed the awesome first person animations entering the titan, I mean there's literally no point to removing them, they were cool as hell.

Went back to look at some of my old Titanfall 1 footage and the difference is easy to see just from map design. You had wide open roads and clearings where multiple Titans could duke it out while on T2 maps its like you have to form an orderly queue just to get shots off. Titan AI didnt seem as dumb as bricks either as it would dance around and do shit while my Titan in T2 just stood still and spammed attack.

It seems whenever a great new FPS multi comes around, its only great for that initial outing before it gets COD'd and all of its uniqueness focus group'd away. Killzone 2 was almost perfect and just needed rocket spam removal, but K3 suddenly had shit low TTK and more COD in it and it just wasn't as good.

I hate how the shoulder canon cancels out the arms reloading the gun, it should be multi tasking.
Add it to the long list of 'why did they change that?' decisions. In the first, smart management of your independently reloading weapons could give you an edge in a Titan on Titan battle. These subtle touches added so much depth.

This was the thing I couldn't put my finger on but you nailed it. The battle felt so alive. It just feels so lifeless now. And that tones down the excitement a lot. I really wonder if it is the same core people designing this. They are missing the soul of what made Titanfall great.

I played on PC as well and I think the grappling hook is going to make for some insane plays on that platform.

That said, you're better off not playing the test at this point. It feels like a step backwards and to the side.

I think a lot of that, awesome, chaotic presentation in the original Titanfall came from trying to make the multiplayer have campaign elements to make up for it not having a single player component. Perhaps now that there is a campaign in the game the multiplayer has become focused on being traditional in it's scope/presentation.

Saw this a lot here, might be the most puzzling. The R-201 Carbine in this build has the same fire rate as last game's R-101, and same hits to kill a pilot at standard range. There aren't a ton of guns in this test, so what's driving people to think this?.

To me the TTK doesn't feel lower, if anything it takes me longer to take someone down compared to TF1. However, on the receiving end it's been really challenging to get out of someone's aim. In TF1 it was fairly simple to take cover, jump down or just get away. For whatever reason, in TF2 I hardly ever manage to evade them successfully. Combination of slower/different movement, map design and players glowing bright red.

Yeah pretty much the only thing that TF2 does better are graphics and performance. There are a lot of small things that feel off from TF1, and those add up.
But I steel feel like the foundation for a good successor is there as the stuff that bugs me seems fixable:

- Pilot movement should be as fast and smooth as TF1.

- Remove the "Amped" from Hardpoint, sitting at a flag for a minute to "amp" it doesn't really fit into a game where you're supposed to be on the move.

- AI in Hardpoint was good because there was something to fight over besides the flags. It also made the rather large maps feel more like a Battlefield, as others have said.

- Didn't get a single Titan in all Hardpoint matches I played, it's so bad I can only presume that that isn't really working right now for some reason.

- Bounty Hunt is cool and I can see why they might replace Attrition with it, but I hate the aspect of it where you have to bank your bonus, because it encourages waiting for the bank to open when you have a lot of bounty. I'd greatly prefer to just play Attrition with the added drop zones and Titan bounties.

- Hate whenever the camera switches to third person. It's okay for the takedowns, but entering and exiting your Titan in first person was so much cooler.

First timer here, really love the ideas I've observed in TF1 though. I followed that game even though I only have a ps4.

Played a bit last night. And I get the feeling that Titanfall 2 seems like hotline Miami 2 vs tf1's HM 1. Im disappointed that the game isnt really rewarding good movement. The game feels good to traverse, best traversal out there, but the map design is so open that continuous movement just gets me taken out by people sticking to the ground. I get the feeling that these maps are indicative of the rest, but I hope.I'm wrong. Anyhow, there's not enough AI in bounty hunt, it feels empty. Long stretches of nothing, which again is disappointing based on what I was pumped for after pinning for TF1. The ADS feels restrictively slow, and the recoil is virtually nonapparent. I think TF2 probably is a great game, but even as someone who didn't play the first, R2 feels weirdly at odds with the things that I respected so much about R1 from a distance.

I know it's unlikely but please delay. Address all of the many issues the game has.

Just figured out that there are over 400k people on Xbox One who have tried this tech tech test.

The ADV Advocate Network you are not able to leave. There are currently 417,323 people in that network.

I suspect the PS4 number will be higher, so must be pushing towards 1m in total?

Anyone able to check? (go to My Networks and see how many people are in the ADV network)

As of 10:10am EST:
ADV
PS4 - 424,781
XB1 - 453,817

Edit:
GAF
PS4 - 1,493
XB1 - 506

I'm leaning towards preferring XB1 myself, as playing with the Elite controller makes using grapple with Bumper Jumper SO much better.

I felt Pilot vs Pilot is more fun than Bounty hunt or Amped hardpoint.
In other words, Titanfall 2 without titan is more fun than Titanfall 2 with titan. I think it is the biggest problem of TF2.

In a way, I'm extremely depressed over how shit this game is. I tried my best to love it but the maps they let us test are so shit. They look so boring and procedurally generated. I'm right there with people that hate the new titan movement, rodeoing, kill streak required for titanfall.

In another way, I'm happy that I just saved $60. I was there on the original Respawn Titanfall forums back in the day. We were all asking for the same things. More customization. More content. Who the fuck OK'd this trash in Titanfall 2??

Glad I played this, because I can now cross this off my list for fall games unless alot changes. Never played the first game so I have nothing to compare it to but I just was not enjoying this at all.

The gunplay and titan gameplay was solid but everything else felt off. Looks like I'll be going with BF1.

I'm kinda warming up to the game but it still feels like someone tried to copy Titanfall and kinda failed to capture what was so good about it. The maps are especially a problem right now. Boomtown is too small, too cramped and there's not enough building to wallrun everywhere. Remove the trees, add tall buidings (to grapple around) with interiors (to guerilla warfare the titans) instead of these out of bounds patches of trees. Homestead I'm not sure what could be done though. The idea of these big fields is cool but as a pilot you are so vulnerable when a titan roll around that it's almost suicide to try to kill the AI when they spawn there in the Bounty mode.

Still this is fun.

I've only played like 10 minutes and it felt like a lot of nice ideas, loved the grappling hook, and so far I'd say it's a day 1 purchase for me. A lot of things will probably be balanced out and so before release though.

youtuber shares his impressions and I 100% agree with his thoughts

He makes a good point regarding the Titans. Having your Titan on a timer probably did a lot to curb camping, because you're not so concerned about getting kills to get the Titan before dying. I really had no desire to play Titanfall 2 after my second match, but in those two matches I definitely felt like camping so I could eke out the kills needed to get my Titan.

The AI also helped with camping - you were rewarded for roaming the map and finding pockets of AI.

Titanfall 1 fixes Titanfall 2's problems. They've talked about approaching Titanfall 2 like a new IP, and I guess they've even managed to achieve the flaws I'd expect in the first iteration of a franchise. It's just weird.

I don't get the hatred for the grappling hook, I loved the addition of it.

Game is not the shitshow I expected after reading impressions here but definitely needs tweeks. Number one for me is titans being on a timer, too much of the game is spent as a pilot

That's the funny thing, Titanfall 1 feels like the sequel to this game.

lol no. not at all. honestly can you even name one "beta" which this isn't, it's more of a server stress test, where they changed things? Maybe they made that pistol do 2 damage instead of 3 in some games but nothing has ever been significantly different after stress tests.

I enjoyed TF1, though didn't get into the community heavily. But my understanding was that the issues most people had with the game were about content, customisation and single-player. I though the general consensus was that they absolutely NAILED the gameplay re. movement, shooting, Titans etc. Maybe I'm wrong on that?
