Titanfall 2 Multiplayer Technical Test Impressions (XB1/PS4)

My first go at a Titanfall game. Couple of questions:

- Can you do anything to knock off an enemy who is attached to your own Titan? I love pinging people off my teamates' titans.
- Is the rough gameplay loop in Bounty Hunter to focus on adds in a wave, make money and then deposit it midwave? Are the opposing team just a nuisance rather than the target?

Thanks. I'm having fun with this (though the Homestead feels all wrong for the movement suite they have given us.)

1. Grapple Hook should be standard.
2. Titans should be on a timer.
3. Titans should still have loadouts. Class based on core ability.
4. Grapple hook should be faster.
5. Titans should have at least one dash and the dash should recharge a bit quicker.
6. Zip lines, especially on a giant map like homestead.
7. Increase the TTK to what it was in Titanfall.

These are the changes i think would make for a better game closer to Titanfall even if the base gameplay has been slowed down and the maps aren't designed around fast movement around the environment like the first.

After, spending a bit of time this morning playing Titanfall and getting my ass handed to me as I haven't played in months, the speed difference between the games is very noticeable. It's obvious the game is slowed down for casuals, but there is sill a game here that can be closer to Titanfall than CoD

1. Disagree about the hook. Right now, there is a good diversity, along with sonar, cloak, and hopefully a buffed stim. The maneuverability should come with better maps. If everyone has hooks, then the pool of abilities becomes much smaller

2. Agreed

Agreed on TTK too, but disagree on hook speed. I think the balance right now between abilities is fine, except for stim.

Id honestly love to get TF2 over Battlefield, but right now, Id rather stick with Battlefield. Im just waiting on the maps and hoping the devs turn back now and add grunts, a timer, and improve the speed. Please Respawn, you are so close!

As for burn cards, I like the boost, but wish it was on a timer too. Hopefully we see good variety. Right now, I see no reason to pick the spider ticks over amped weapons.

I also am afraid that because of no timers and grunts, the boosts are going to be a lot less varied.

I don't like the "Amped" part of hardpoint. It encourages sitting at a point for a minute and doing nothing. Like sure, it encourages defense but there are times when it is clear no ones gonna be attacking, and you need to stay in that room instead of moving out a bit and intercepting enemies on their way.

You can easily run and gun and dominate. The TTK might be a little longer but the core mechanics are all the same.

I'll argue it's more of a pick up and play shooter than COD as well.

Sure, maybe at the very beginning. Titanfall 1 has literally no skill ceiling. You would not just "pickup and play" against anyone remotely decent in the game.

Titanfall 1 has so much shit to learn it's actually kind of baffling how deep it was.

Just coming into the thread now, but glad (and sad) to see that others are feeling the same. I played the living hell out of T1, but the sequel is just missing...something. At first, I wanted to chalk it up to me just not being used to the new mechanics and stuff but something's not there. Really wish I could put my finger on it as I would love to give constructive feedback but I'm just not sure.

One thing I can say is that I really, really don't like how the new titans feel, from weapons to movement, they just don't have that raw simplicity w/ depth that made the original set of titans work so well (I don't feel as in control of my loadout as before which sucks too). Also, I'm surprisingly not sold on the grappling hook, I feel like it works great when you nail it, but feels terrible most of the time. That's one thing where I'm probably just not used to the mechanic so I won't hold it against T2, but compared to all the movement options in T1 it just feels unnatural to me from the get-go :(

gotta agree with the other comments. if you had told me this was cod:iw mp footage i would have believed you.

Sadly yes, the Titans are what differentiates them from COD or Battlefield and they are rarely in the battle.

It is a "beta" so they will hopefully fix this

They could easily make hooks available to everyone and balance it with cool downs. For instance, maybe you have a cooldown on your hook from grappling onto an opponent to melee but it works as normal for terrain movement.

It's very easy to rodeo titans, hop off, grapple, repeat. Could be avoided by titans having better health/electric smoke cooldown decreased, dropping the grenade mechanic from pilot and having to shoot something- thus making it risky for the pilot for being noticed much easier shooting at the titan.

and please drop the glowing from enemy players..

edit: that link makes me miss zip lining through a legit map.

:(

Just played a couple rounds. Very disappointed. It feels so clunky. I don't know how to describe it, but I felt like TF1 had amazing responsive gameplay. This feels... Very different.

It's not the only thing. The parkour in Titanfall 1 is, to me, the true difference between it and everythign else. It's a seamless, natural, parkour that i haven't seen perfected anywhere else. They tinkered with that when they shouldn't of.

I've been super down on the game in this thread but I'll still probably get it on launch. Respawn was solid when it came to support in TF1 dispite how heartbreaking it was watching the community leave. That plus I still need my mecha fix finally coupling with this being the first year since MW3 that I'm passing on CoD. So count one gaffer in for X1 launch.

Played a ton of TF1 on PC and this ain't doing it for me. Lots of little changes I don't like. Not liking the maps or the Bounty Hunt mode. Netcode seems good though.

I enjoyed my session earlier. I will be picking this up day one.

Also nice to see respawn showing devs how you enable players to play low ping games at their leisure.. The datacenter selection is really great. Are you watching 343???

played a few game of TF 1 on pc just to compare... Yeah feels completely different.

I still think TF maps are too big for the player count and I don't care how fast you transverse the map.

You get your titan way to quick and it is a repetitive loop.

Despite its flaws I had fun and the reason I quit the game besides lack of content was games like this get boring unless playing with friends/online friends in a party. OH and fuck that smart gun, I see people still abuse it.

TF2 problems are far worse... It has been codified, but to appeal to that mass market they did need to slow the game down and make the maps smaller. Problem is they have done too much.

Rodoing a titan in TF 1 was unbalanced, unless you had electric smoke to counter or someone helped you.

I'd rather have the old style of Titan if not the exact same Titans back.

Give us more options to kit them out than a set standard. Maybe that is the intent but if the options just fall in line with the general Titan "vision" then count me out.

Ion..he's the laser dude.. Scorch..he's the FIRE dude..I wonder if we're going to get an ice titan and he has a grudge with the fire titan.

Fuck it.

Im jumping back into Titan Fall 1.

Hope the necessary changes are made to the full game, but this beta shifted the game from 'Day 1' to 'wait for impressions'

The first one played like COD, so I'm not sure what the issue is.

This is so wrong I don't even know where to begin.

Hopefully, what we are seeing in this beta is a *very* early build and what we actually get is a return to what made TF1 great + various improvements. If Respawn needs to delay this a few months to get it right, so be it.

After playing this bullshit for a few hours it instantly dropped off my Day 1 Collectors Edition list and became a "maybe later at heavy discount". I'm kinda blown away by how badly they seem to be fucking this up. TF1 may have been short on content and lacking a SP campaign... But the MP gameplay loop and gunplay are far and away the best I've ever played. It has it's flaws, but in those two areas they needed to leave the core alone and just tweak a few things for the sequel. I was excited as hell about the inclusion of a campaign, offline modes, etc that should've been in the original. But Lord knows why they thought they had to change everything and ape CoD to do so. I have no idea what they're thinking with what I've seen of so far, but this is Titanfall in name only.

This is barely Titanfall anymore. Guess I'll be picking Battlefield 1 up at launch instead and just wait for a price drop on this. Or see if Respawn actually listens to feedback.

Though it reminded me I need to jump back to TF1 and finally clear that MVP challenge so I can move past Gen9 50.

Not really.

bolded for truth.

took me a solid 60 hours before it finally clicked, and i started winning consistently [now i'm a top tier player on PC, but that's not saying much seeing as how the community has disappeared].

i remember those first 60 hours fondly, because i kept turning to my wife and saying "this game is so much fun, i mean i SUCK, but i'm having SO MUCH FUN!"

It's so crazy to me that this feels WORSE than TF1. I was kind of sceptical at them making a AAA game in Source in 2016 but I figured that if that was to preserve whatever magic they had bottled to make Titanfall 1 play and feel the way it did then it would be worth it. But they haven't even done that.

Exactly. I must suck at searching, but that is a perfect video. This whole process of calling down a Titan and getting in is beautiful. It has what TF2 doesn't so far---immersion. Especially retaining the first-person view when you get in.
Glad they are asking questions to the community. I need to login and vote, though my answer is "Don't care". Just bring me back the feel of the titans.

Im debating on cancelling my CE preorder, this is just so disappointing. I kinda want to hear the devs say something, give me some hope! I don't know if I can support this game

I don't think the engine is the issue. It's pretty much a new engine with all the work that's gone into it from what I've read/heard. But I agree it doesn't feel like TF1. It's not bad at all... But it's not near the perfection of the first game. Not sure if it's movement or maps or what though.

You don't remember shooting people in the back and camping the same area? Come on, clearly that's what made Titanfall such a great game...

About this... Don't pilots show up on the map if they shoot without a silencer, and that dead pilots can literally see exactly where you are?

No one was successful camping in Titanfall... Like, especially those people on top or towers or in homes (eat a cluster to the face).

Oh I know, I didn't mean it to come across like that. I just meant that I was surprised they were sticking with Source because of Frostbite + the issues that TF1 had because of Source (particularly the enormous file size on PC & multithreading issues) but I figured that it was because they were going to leave the base gameplay mostly untouched, instead focusing on new content and maybe new weapons with (obviously) prettier graphics. It feels like they haven't done that though and have rebuilt a lot of the base systems and they feel inherently worse. :/

You know what could work well? the hacking knife! hack the point for double points once you capture it, maybe have the hack on a cooldown or it ends when the enemy walks into the zone to start their capture.

You can't hack anything in Titanfall 2 can you?

if you stood still at all in Titanfall, you were dead.

It's a rather simplistic shooter.

this is when you know someone doesn't know what they're talking about.

I like the idea of the amped hardpoint more than how it was executed.

Rewarding defense and it also can give your team a stand against one that is holding the other two points solid.

I've been playing it lately and I have to agree that this pretty much feels like BLOPS3 on foot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (BLOPS3 is pretty fun). The gunplay and movements feel great, even if it's a bit slower than TF1. Sliding mechanics are solid, hit detection is good too.

I think the issues people are having here are the Titans themselves, in TF1 I never felt like I had to find cover or run away from on foot players - it's different here because of the rodeo system and the fact that Titans can be taken down so darn easily.

I'm actually having fun with the Tech Test, surprisingly. Hopefully Respawn can improve and take into account to some of the criticism they're facing and adjust accordingly by launch, or shortly after.

I've got PS4 gameplay footage coming up with lots of Titan action!
