Why does it seem like Sony is rushing to release PS4 Pro

I understand that once the specs are finalized and manufacturing has started that it's hard to stop but why did they need to release a more powerful console this year?

It just seems like this is being rushed out for no reason. If it's for PSVR, I don't think they have done a good job selling it. PS4 is still selling great and would be able to buy Sony more time to get PS4 Pro right (specs, developers, messaging and etc). PS4 games by 3rd Party still perform better than the XB1 version.

I don't think they're rushing it so much as gamers deluded themselves into thinking it was meant to be something more than it is.

Pressure from other departments to "push 4K".

It seems like a very half step device and doesn't even look premium since it shares the new bargain looking Slim design and not the slightly upmarket og PS4 gloss.

They just showed a range of games that are improved on more powerful hardware. Horizon for example looks like nothing else I've seen. I don't see how it's rushed?

Partially for VR, partially because the system was fairly low powered to begin with, partially because tech advances move along at a faster clip these days and partially to have something to go up against Microsoft's new hardware.

Christmas, money, together with the new PS4 Slim. It makes sense.

It's nice to have more options, you know?

Because PSVR is coming and they know og PS4 isnt gonna cut very long to support PSVR.

That's exactly why they should have delayed the Pro into mid next year.

Launching the two side by side seems a smack in the face to those who buy into OG PSVR

they committed early and do not want to deviate from their plan because of scorpio. i expected a spec bump to get closer to scorpio but it looks like they don't care about the power difference between the two because they consider this still as a ps4 and scorpio is technically next gen

personal prediction : they are going to release the ps5 in 2018 which is more powerful than scorpio so they can boast that they are the most powerful console again compared to scorpio. this is why you have mark cerny saying things like "we are not starting a new gen"

The moment those specs leaked from a credible source expectations should've been in check. Yet here we are about 3 ps4 threads are a console war I've seen Sony pony..I have seen Sony pony on here in about a year.

It doesn't seem like it at least in terms of no UHD but I wouldn't say it's overall rushed. It's what they can do at this time in terms of hardware so getting 4K native wasn't going to happen because of parts not being there. I guess they could have waited like MS for better realisation for 4K but overall the pro is not too bad of a device/plan IMO.

Because PSVR is coming and they know og PS4 isnt gonna cut very long to support PSVR.
The thing is PSVR have to work on both so that isn't the case.

Because they sell 4K TVs
Because they want to sell more people on PSVR
Because Xbox One S exists

Most importantly: Because the ASP for PS4 would keep falling otherwise

They want to sell 4K TVs.

This doesn't hold much water when the PS4 Pro doesn't even support UHD Blu-Rays and the fact that there are other 4K TV manufacturers besides Sony out there who are probably more successful. Not once did they say Bravia during the announcements.

Fake edit:

My hypothesis? They're trying to establish a 3 year cadence and hit the holiday season. Delaying it further does not benefit them whatsoever.

Seems like something to protect against Scorpio, but something they want out ASAP to allow enough time to pass for a next generation machine announcement. I feel like we'll see PS5 in 2018 at this point. Sony can let Microsoft eat the cost of pushing out a 6TFLOP machine next year and then come in at a lower price with similar specs in Fall 2018.

There's only like 20 games released and unreleased who benefits from the Pro as of now.

Sounds like it's rushed to me.

Yup. I really think the Scorpio announcement sort of inflated expectations for the Neo that it could not meet.

Because they have to. Releasing early is their only advantage over Scorpio.

Because it's part of their strategy and planning to keep the momentum going. Releasing new products is like the best way to refresh the market and keep the interest.. PS4 is selling well now, but is it going to sell well a year from now? Looking at past consoles, they just peak at something 3-4 years in and things drop sharply after that. Selling systems at 200 bucks isn't worthwhile for a business. They need to keep a certain price for the product, consoles will never drop that low again. They just phase out. Why they had to release it this year? Why not? There is no time as good as present. Andrew House was quite clear that they giving options to people and just putting this out there, it's like a experiment for how to do things in future and you have to start now. I'm not sure how it's rushed. Is better specs really that relevant for this? It's more than good enough for what it's supposed to do.

It's a terrible way of doing business like Nintendo does, just waiting and waiting when all of your momentum is gone to release something when no one cares anymore. Sony has everyone's attention now in this market, it's the best time to do things like this. It's much harder if you're behind.

Rushed or not, it's a much more interesting product than the same exact thing repackaged into smaller box, like console manufacturers have been doing for decades now. It's the hardware they designed, that can be released now for a relatively low price - so why not?

There is no way their next iteration will be at the same level of the Scorpio. It will be a decent amount more powerful, as it should be.

What people are forgetting is that there's also the undocumented improvements to existing games that do not need official patches. Games that were struggling to maintain a locked framerate will be able to take advantage of higher clockspeeds and additional resources provided by PS4 Pro.

We're already seeing what a minor bump in the Xbox One S can bring, I'm looking forward to what PS4 Pro can bring to games like Battlefield 4.

This. I remember a thread on here that basically said why Sony did this and it had to do with the new parts being cheaper to use than continuing to pay more money for the old parts so they said, why not?

And only because there aren't proper full lists out, WHAT exactly is gonna get patched and what not ( I don't even have to include new titles as it's mandatory), it's rushed ?
The IGN list is just the things they saw on the stream. TLOU for example seems to be playable on NEO at the event.
So, maybe the concern is rushed.
Just wait a bit until you see some details. Yes, Sony should have presented their infos better.

The Neo is a perfect example of enthusiast buying into a self perpetuating narrative they created. Ever since it was confirmed that devs were using a new PS4 model and we got specs everyone should have known that those specs were locked.

But because MS had a higher number Sony had to counter because engineering takes seconds and the Neo just has to have the biggest epeen in the console space. In reality the Neo is an opportunistic piece of tech to capitalize on chip manufactures selling better GPUs at almost no price increase with the added benefit of selling your console at a higher price and getting some synergy with PSVR.
