Why does it seem like Sony is rushing to release PS4 Pro

I'll eventually get one of these but I feel like Sony would have done better just waiting until Q1 2018 announcing PS5 and just releasing PS5 in Holiday 2018 fully backwards compatible with the PS4. Have it do full on 4k (not upscaled), have the 4k blu-ray player etc.

I do agree this thing feels kind of forced

It definitely feels rushed. The presentation did nothing to entice me to upgrade. Each showing was the just the game running on new hardware, no notable comparison was made at all. Who creates a dedicated event for a new product and only keeps it running for about 45 minutes?

Also, what the hell is up with that design? Sony goes from making a somewhat iconic looking console in 2013 to this?

How is it rushed? We've known the specs since March? This was their plan from the beginning.

Not having 4k Blu-ray blows, I'll admit. But their plan for this thing was probably to have it out by November of 2016 since they started the R&D process. You guys just need to temper your expectations. The rumors never said this was going to be the biggest leap of any console ever. They all always said this was an iPhone to iPhone S type situation.

Nothing feels rushed about it. This seems planned from the start to be what it is.

though I admit I'm still a little salty about no 4K Blu-ray.

Cerny said that they were thinking about it right after the PS4 shipped, to bridge the gap between PS4 and PS5. And they were probably in development for atleast a year or a year and a half with a goal of 2016

If they always wanted the PS5 to release near the end of the decade, it was never going to be the case that they would shutter these plans and release a less powerful system earlier.

If you're going from PS4 to PS5, the difference will be bigger too than just going for a 2018 unit.

Seems like 4K made Sony think they needed a new console.

NX and Scorpio made them think it needed to be more powerful and start the smartphone-like cycle in consoles.

PSVR launch made them think it needed to come out this year.
