Why does it seem like Sony is rushing to release PS4 Pro

The Neo is a perfect example of enthusiast buying into a self perpetuating narrative they created. Ever since it was confirmed that devs were using a new PS4 model and we got specs everyone should have known that those specs were locked.

But because MS had a higher number Sony had to counter because engineering takes seconds and the Neo just has to have the biggest epeen in the console space. In reality the Neo is an opportunistic piece of tech to capitalize on chip manufactures selling better GPUs at almost no price increase with the added benefit of selling your console at a higher price and getting some synergy with PSVR.

Pretty much. If the cost is the same then why not add it, then even with scorpio coming next year the platform will still have a lot to offer even when it releases. Then they probably can drop their new generation in about 3 years time.

They have a year lead on Scorpio

Sony could easily prep another iteration a year after Scorpio is out, giving the current PS4 Pro 24 months on the market. At that point PS4 Pro replaces the standard and a newer model becomes the high end

Christmas...and they know it's less powerful than Scorpio...significantly...so it needs to get to market with as much time between them as possible

I didn't feel like it was rushed. I watched the presser and I feel like the messaging was clear - whether you get a pro or not or whether you have a 4K or not. The post show really hammered on this. This is the first time this type of upgrade is being done and I think they did a good job.

If there is any issue I have with the presser was that the price of the PS4 is $299 with no bundled game. Either bundle a game with it or sell it for $249.

Because PSVR is coming and they know og PS4 isnt gonna cut very long to support PSVR.

I think this is the truth. While I won't say Sony doesn't care what MS does, the Scorpio is less a factor than not having a console to support their VR initiative adequately.

Not impressed at all with this offering. Sony in 2013 was on fire, every decision they made was gold. Now... something seems off. Their design is off, the specs are underwhelming, and no UHD Blu ray player in a console that is selling itself on 4k is hilarious.

MS is hitting the right notes now. Xbone S is a gorgeous console packed with features, scorpio is going to be a beast that's both forward and backward compatible, and their play anywhere initiative is very intriguing.

Sony is still leading this gen and will win it handily, but the seeds of future competition are being planted now, and MS' vision seems to be more focused and forward thinking. I can feel the tides starting to shift back towards Microsoft.

Want to buy PSVR but don't have PS4, so PS4 Pro is perfect timing when both ready to buy.

Maybe they want more attract to non-PS users on PSVR.

There is little to no evidence that these Sony "missteps" everyone keeps freaking out about will translate to the real world.

Maybe it seems they are rushing to you, because you've written some kind of narrative in your head where "now is not a good time" to release this console. Sometimes, I write this narrative too. But, to be honest, it is entirely made-up in my mind. It's not based on real concrete evidence or analysis. We may know better than Sony's marketing department (wouldn't be the first time) and we also may not.

Based on the hype I hear from my non-gaming friends about PSVR, now is probably a great time to catch those people who want VR, don't have or want PCs, and can afford a PsPro & a PC. At the same time, people like me who are just ALL IN ALL THE TIME will happily upgrade their PS4s over the holiday.

They aren't rushing. It was just a bad presentation.

Yeah I think the venue and audience they chose didn't seem to really usher in any of that hardcore enthusiast hype

Compare these two

Scorpio reveal:

PS4P reveal:

there was a different ambience between the two for a variety of reasons, some games at the PS meeting looked stunning though, Horizon in particular and I'm sure that Sony made some positive strides with consumers

Could have done so much more if they waited a bit, maybe even pull the rug from under MS again. As it stands it will be the other way around next E3.

In what way?

Also outside of no uhd player there design makes sense its the best they can get from AMD at this time.

We knew for a while that the Neo would be out Q4 this year. I think a lot of you guys expected too much especially when the Scorpio was revealed to be 6TF. Remember, the Scorpio isn't out until a full year later guys.

There's only like 20 games released and unreleased who benefits from the Pro as of now.

Sounds like it's rushed to me.
Every game being released here on out has to pass Pro cert. So that's every game moving forward, full tilt.

Also, did you expect every dev under the sun to patch their past games? I expected less than were shown.

Power generally doesn't matter. I said that when people were beggingfor PS4Pro upgrades to be closer to scorpio and i say it now as well. Getting out ahead and getting out early will be more of a factor with NEO having sold quite a few by the time Scorpio comes out.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought Sony was giving the developers the choice of whether or not to make a better performing version for the Pro or to just release the same version of the game for both the PS4 and Pro.

No, they have to have a base mode identical to PS4, and a NEO mode

Yup. MS announcement of the Scorpio completely skewered the perspective and expectations people had of the PS4P. The Pro was always meant to be a mild mid-gen refresh; It was never meant to be the start of a new generation and all the new power that brings. This is even reflected in the name: PS4 Pro. Sony making it clear that the Pro should be considered part of the PS4 ecosystem.

The Scropio, on the other hand, seems to be positioned as being a fresh start for MS. Yes, Scorpio games will have to work on the XBO, but it seems MS has marketed the SScorpio as a "reset" for the Xbox platform.

When did they say that the PS4 Pro would only be supported through the PS4 lifecycle?

I may have misunderstood, but I recall Andrew House or Mark Cerny saying something along these lines when announcing Ps4 pro today:

This isn't about blurring the lines of console generations, the goal is for ps4proto still be part of the ps4 generation but provide a even higher quality for the gamers that demand it.

This was any take away also. Hope it's true. Long live generations.

Seems like something to protect against Scorpio, but something they want out ASAP to allow enough time to pass for a next generation machine announcement. I feel like we'll see PS5 in 2018 at this point. Sony can let Microsoft eat the cost of pushing out a 6TFLOP machine next year and then come in at a lower price with similar specs in Fall 2018.

I agree with you.

The problem here is people want PS5 right now for $399.

If this was just an announcement of the Slim with just new wireless and better power consumption people would be talking about upgrading.

But for some reason a refresh with a little better hardware for $399 is making people lose their minds.

This is a PS4 that's it.

We knew about that from the start, but some people were misunderstanding about what it meant

they committed early and do not want to deviate from their plan because of scorpio. i expected a spec bump to get closer to scorpio but it looks like they don't care about the power difference between the two because they consider this still as a ps4 and scorpio is technically next gen

personal prediction : they are going to release the ps5 in 2018 which is more powerful than scorpio so they can boast that they are the most powerful console again compared to scorpio. this is why you have mark cerny saying things like "we are not starting a new gen"

seems pointless to release a new console that'll live for only a year (this is assuming they don't make the PS4 Pro the base)

Because of how it looks. It's like they didn't have the time to design something that was aesthetically pleasing. Just take the PS4 and slap another level on it.

This. People always set the bar too high. Red Dead Redemption 2 announcement ? Lmao.

The RDR2 hype was real, efforts for tempering were made to no avail

and then Agent posts, and about how R* owes Sony an exclusive.

Hell even the ME:A was a bit... underwhelming.

I understand that once the specs are finalized and manufacturing has started that it's hard to stop but why did they need to release a more powerful console this year?

It just seems like this is being rushed out for no reason. If it's for PSVR, I don't think they have done a good job selling it. PS4 is still selling great and would be able to buy Sony more time to get PS4 Pro right (specs, developers, messaging and etc). PS4 games by 3rd Party still perform better than the XB1 version.

Do you understand how companies like Sony make decisions? They need to source parts and set up production lines months in advance. They've had the engineering design for the PS4 Pro locked since way before the Scorpio announcement. There's no way they "rushed" the Pro, they've probably had a release date in mind for over a year.

Well it's pretty cheap since ps4 is still around that price range, might as well buy the pro edition. I figure they release the Pro and then in two years time release PS5 properly.

Because PSVR is coming and they know og PS4 isnt gonna cut very long to support PSVR.

This...sonys putting all their eggs in the vr basket...the pro seems like it was made to address the shortcomings of the ps4 and give devs more headroom

I think the pro patches on vr games are going to prove the point.

That said...sony did a pretty piss poor job in trying to convey what the pro exactly is from an existing owners point of view

I think the spec bump is a monetisation strategy to keep the ASP up mid-cycle. They're trying this model out and if it sees success, like DLC did, then it might become par for the course going forward.

Specs have been known for a long time and a fall release has been heavily suggested by the same documents stating all games from October on must launch with a neo mode.

So the only thing being rushed is people's expectations that it was anything beyond what we got, because we were told exactly what we were getting months ago.

Don't for that to add "unrealistic expectations" to your first part, it adds up pretty nicely.

If the leaks weren't so early then there won't be that much a time for people to dream up stuff that goes too out of control.
