UHD blu-rays have sold like 228K total as of the end of June.

I have to imagine the PS4 Pro is going to sell more hardware than that, the total number of UHD blu-rays that have been sold.

In the context of all of the other components and R&D my point is that $15 is small fries. Many of us would have made different choices on where to cut corners. Sony did it with the drive.

It's not unreasonable for me to have an opinion based on admitted rough estimation that does respect my understanding of other costs on things like retooling manufacturing line and availability of components in the supply chain. People seemed to want an idea on what the cost was so I did my best. Sorry if my opinion bothered you.

Even after basically pioneering it Sony are planning on ditching Blu Ray all together in favor of compressed streaming methods, because they know people love settling for less.

So, they put up a front and make it seem like they are supporting UHD Blu Ray in a gamble to make other companies plan and invest in jumping all in because they, along with everyone else, think that Sony are about to yet again pioneer the next evolution of the Blu Ray format with UHD.

They even reveal plans for a stand alone UHD 4K Blu Ray player and decide to invest in more 4K content than anyone else in the form of their movies.

Sony reveal the "PS4K." The masses hear 4K and get hyped.

People start buying UHD 4K capable TV's. Many of them from Sony's own line.

They reveal the Playstation Pro sans UHD player after they know that certain companies have started to show their hand in UHD support.

Sony knows that they can get away with nearly anything after all the goodwill that they have garnered and that their very large and loyal fan base will start to tear apart UHD physical media at all costs in order to downplay the missing feature.

Fast forward a year or two and UHD Blu Ray has crashed and burned and the other companies who had invested in it have been left hurt by the fall. Sony reigns supreme.

The consumers begin the waiting process all over again yearning for Sony to extend the next teet from which they can suckle.

Cooling isn't a selling point. It's a cost. This isn't just your PS4 with a swapped out GPU.

It's not a 'Goddamn defense force'. If a UHD Blu-ray player is what you're looking for in a console then go get the One S or wait for the Scorpio or any other iteration of these consoles that may include one. That's your prerogative. Just know that the outrage here is insanely overblown and nobody will give two shits about this 6 months from now.

If you have lackluster Internet and are interested in watching 4K media, this device is not going to scratch that itch for you. If you're a videophile who absolutely needs that 'straight from the disc' quality instead of the concessions that go along with streaming, why the shit are you sitting around waiting on a gaming console to give you that? Again, your prerogative, but not all of our priorities are the same.

I know I wouldn't use the UHD Blu-ray drive unless someone let me borrow a disc to try it out. Also, 4k content delivery and internet infrastructure isn't going to do anything but improve. To see people say that the lack of a UHD Blu-ray player will make this thing obsolete strikes me as odd.

Didn't know the bolded part as I haven't bought a Blu-ray since long before UHD was a thing on the market. Fair enough on that if true.

Not making excuses... Buy what you want. If your deciding factor in your gaming console purchase is whether or not it plays 4k blu-rays, then do your thing. I just sincerely doubt that people will really care about this omission for very long beyond the system's release.

$15 multiplied by the millions is not an insignificant amount of money by any means. Just saving a couple dollars by changing out a couple components in a product that will be mass produced in the millions each year would be a boon.

I don't have a 4k tv/monitor yet, but with my isp if I wanted 4k entertainment, I wouldn't be streaming it that's for sure. It sucks for people that looked forward to upgrading and wanted the blurays. I'll just get a dedicated player if I ever get to the point of needing one though. I haven't used a blu ray of mine in a long time, 4k blu rays would change that.

Planet Earth would have to start it all over again though. Or maybe some amazing movie that isn't out yet.

I mean, this is about Sony putting out a (psuedo)4K console. So, they'll release the console that they own, but not support the discs they helped to create, even when both are pushing the format.

This is where things get confusing. Do they believe in the format or do they not? 4K downloads/streaming is a band aid over a bullet hole at the absolute best.

Are people being serious with this? I've seen it multiple times now...

The libraries are over 90% identical and each has their exclusives. If only one can play 4K movies, and 4K is the new technology they are introducing, then yeah that's massively relevant.

sony is marketing this as a games console. they got their priorities straight if you ask me. and who's to say they couldnt incorporate uhd into future hardware iterations, but i suspect people will find something else to argue about. some just cant be pleased.

If they believe the 4K market is going to be niche enough till the PS5 then they'll probably think most will just buy a standalone player. Anyone buying an XB1 is likely to be a gamer and if you are a serious gamer right now Sony know they have a lot of the spotlight there. Meaning I think a reasonable amount of gamers who have XB1s also have PS4s.

Either way I don't think they see everything riding on the PS division. It already does gangbusters due to gaming. 4K if its not to die a death like 3D or progress at a pace that isn't a crawl needs more than a PS4. It needs the mass market to give a shit and not all just rely on Netflix and ordinary much cheaper blu rays.

On Netflix and Youtube, yes (why YT? I dunno). You need 17mbps to get 4K streaming on Netflix, though. Pretty hefty.

This is a value thing. If the cheaper Xbone can do it, why can't either of the new PS4's when Sony has large investments on that medium? It just makes the Xbone S (and assuming Scorpio has it) look just a little bit better.

Who is spinning. I'm pointing out a fact. Given every other aspect of the console is effectively the same as the base model, the price increase is based almost solely around the GPU bump.

I've already mentioned in other threads that the price is good. It's pretty much the only think making the console at all relevant.

The digital future... in a piece of hardware that launches in a few months and is made to fill in the last half of this gen, so three or four years. Fact is, people still buy physical movies and games and will continue to do so in great numbers for the next several years.

Why would I buy a PS4 Pro?

I can still play Sony exclusives. The games only look slightly better. I'm not sure how many games I already have will look and play any better. It doesn't feel time to upgrade quite yet, it's way too expensive to buy both this and PSVR this year. And the Scorpio will be out next year significantly more powerful and will also include 4K UHD disc playback.

Pretty ridiculous that they didn't include the latest UHD Blu-Ray but then again Nintendo can't even put a damn Ethernet port into it's last 2 consoles...so Microsoft wins by default.

A large chunk of the conference was explaining 4K TV's and it's benefits along with HDR. They set themselves up actually.

Wow Sony managed to unsell me on something within just 45 minutes. Impressive. I now have my eye very closely on the Scorpio, and that's from someone who's usually always favoured PS.

I prefer my PS4 to my XBox One but I bought the S and 4K playback was a big factor for me. Sorry if you can't process that

I think this shows that they believe that gamers would rather have a better gpu than a 4K UHD player, and that 4K physical media is going to be a niche market, rather than a mainstream one.

There might be a pro revision but there will be no pro slim. To get the slim there needs to be a node shrink. Next node shrink won't be for several years and once that happens we will see the PS5 not a pro slim.

Internet infrastructure at large isn't even close to being able to support an all digital future.

I hope everyone in fiber towns enjoys all those ASMR cat videos on YT in 4K though!
 
I think a big part of the criticism is that Sony has always pushed for being the first to incorporate new technology at a low cost into their consoles.

When Ps2 was released it was the cheapest DVD player on the market when everyone wanted a DVD player.

When Ps3 was released it was a huge shock that it had blu-ray considering standalone players at the time were around $300+. The problem was $500 wasnt a bargain for a video game console and the games were lacking in the beginning.

Now that UHD is beginning to be slowly enter the market the cheapest player is the XB1 S at $300 and Sony doesnt include it in their new system.

With Playstation, even though Sony has never tried to push it as more than a game console it has always taken over the living room with multimedia features they added on. Perhaps people have gotten accustomed to this and the reason why many are complaining.

It is $50 cheaper for the 1tb one s, and it has 1/3 the grunt.. Do you not see how yoir distortion and concern for how sony looks come off as trolling?
 
They should do an HDDVD stand alone like add on for PS4P. $50 bucks gets you the optical drive to connect to the PS4P. I'd probably buy it but my use of it would probably be limited in actuality.

Man I wish we still had Blockbuster. I use to love going there with friends and picking out movies to rent for the weekend. I got a lot of use out of my PS3 bluray back in the day but now without rentals, I wouldn't be watching many UHDs.
 
Maybe data showed them no one used the PS4 blu ray player but they didnt realise the reason no one uses the PS4 as a BR player is because its loud as fuck when spinning a disc on top of normal PS4 loudness.


I still use my PS3 as my regular BR player.

But not 4K UHD. The adoption rate for 4K tvs isn't forcasted to hit 33% until 2019, while at the same time physical movie sales continue to see double digital declines on an annual basis. Combine the two and you a niche market combining with a declining one.

Sony has access to market data, and decided that it wasn't worth the $15. That should tell you something.

Everything adds up. It's always a tradeoff between features and price, combined resulting in perceived value to the consumers. And obviously those consumers have different ways of ranking features and their relative value. The key is to hit the most of those people as well as possible. But there's also things like synergy, press coverage, and word of mouth that need to be considered. A company with 4K TV's, films, and patent royalties from the format make this seem strange to me.

But Sony decided that they were better off cutting this feature instead of some other component, or just absorbing the hit to profits. My opinion is they pretty much undermined the position of being a 4K device and associated hype. Seemingly the 4K capabilities are pretty much largely tied to services offered on any 4K tv already.

That's because 4KTV market penetration is terrible.

Presumably, after a few years, that would change. As 4KTVs increase in sales (which they undoubtedly will because most new TVs will be 4K), sales of UHDs will also.
