Ever heard of "Live from PlayStation"? Plenty of people playing, don't see anyone having near as many problems as GB.

EDIT: Here's someone playing job simulator, for instance. Two moves, no visible tracking issues.

This. I was watching some people play Batman VR and they weren't having any near amount of issues as Giant Bomb was having.

Digital Foundry made it seem like you had to sit pretty close to the camera for it to work properly. It seems the GB guys were sitting pretty far back on the couch.

I think Daydream might be better just because I trust Google to do a better job that Samsung and they seem to have been working on this for a while.

with the couch moved, Brad had some drifting issues but yeah the overall experience seemed better for him until that last game. that was really bad.

the green screen area is also the same area they use for their vive and oculus stuff, with 0 issues.

One potential of VR that they talked about on the Bombcast is 3D modeling.

Like, right now 3D modeling is actually 2D modeling since you have to project the 3D models in a 2D surface. But VR completely solves this and you can mold stuff in a full 3D plan. It's awesome and a big advancement in modeling. I would even say this will be how all 3D stuff is made in the future.

Zbrush in VR could be pretty amazing if you could sculpt with a very fine degree control.

The screen door effect was literally like looking through a screen door, you could make out the pixels. This was with an S6 so I don't know if it improved (I hear its explosive with a Note 7... *cough*)

Can we all just avoid the hyperbolic chatter about what actually happened with GB? It's pretty toxic, in all honesty you guys know that GB didn't kill VR and that GB had issues but have also demonstrated that maybe some people won't. This stream was relatively problem free, but they can't ignore that they and many other outlets/people did have some really serious issues.

Their main point on VR in general, I think, has been that the games aren't quite there yet. The drifting/pulsing problems are almost more a side note than the main focus of what they've covered.

Whether I'm five or six feet away from the couch, I find games like Tumble VR unplayable. I have to sit and wait for the controller to stop drifting to drop a piece. This is with both my PS4 launch era camera and the one that came in my PSVR launch bundle, moving it from above the TV to below, and doing tracking light calibration.

I love my PSVR, but for some of us at least it isn't without its significant issues. And that's fine. As an early adopter, this is what I signed up for. It's a world changing game experience for me despite the sometimes serious tracking flaws. It doesn't really get in the way except for games that require major precision.

Maybe someone figures out how to reproduce this issue (Sony or someone at home) and how to fix it. Maybe they don't. So it goes with paradigm shifting hardware launches. They're often rocky and imperfect.

Yeah, fair enough. They do have a lot of colored lights. I just see a lot of "Giant Bomb are cynical killjoys" criticism here that I just jump to conclusions at this point.

I don't have any colored lights (or any other direct lights or reflective surfaces for that matter) and have similar issues to the GB crew. I dunno. It's early on in a substantial hardware launch that it's equally likely to be user error or hardware error. Too early to tell.

Yes, but it's a tough thing to get right. Having the illusion of moving on screens that close to your eyes while you're sitting causes quite a bit of motion sickness.

I wonder if Sony upgrading the camera would improve the tracking, or if they would need to revamp the entire tracking system to IR or lasers instead of visible light. It seems like all the stuff people were worried about (screen resolution, PS4 power, etc) turned out okay but the PSMove stuff is holding it back.

Maybe by the time PSVR2 comes out inside-out tracking would be the industry standard and people wouldn't need the extra hardware.

But...after having actually played PSVR for about 5 hours yesterday, I feel this is a classic case of Giant Bomb being jaded as they always are.

VR is pretty fucking awesome. and the word of mouth from this thing could be insane.
My friends were also all blown away. being in it, vs watching it is completely different.
things like the 3D presence and controller tracking were way better than I expected.

Even stuff like jittery moves didn't detract from how good the experience was.

I didn't experience much issues, lots of stuff that i expected to be issues turned out to be overblown.
the only real issues were; batman had weird turning stuff, and job simulator required too much space.
Felt a little motion sick, but I found myself remedying it by just looking at my virtual body when i felt weird.

It doesn't really feel like a compromised experience.
There are things which could be better; such as a higher res display, better controller tracking, and bigger play area, but the positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

Ehm. It's not hard to imagine that maybe the PSVR isn't all that as of right now, especially after having played dozens and dozens of hours on Rift and Vive. But yeah, jaded, sure.

e: There were a few good if not amazing games but they were just a few. It's more tech demo type of stuff for the most part.

The sinking in the seat during Driveclub is hardcore and would make me extremely jaded to the VR experience.

But it also must be an issue with their setup or the game because I can't imagine even Sony releasing a headset with a known issue where cockpit games have to be recalibrate every minute or else you sink under the seat!!

ugh why are people still so determined to let the GB stream and meme gifs determine everything when there are so many units now in homes?

A month ago I could understand that maybe - maybe - only GB had the courage to tell (or show) the truth. But now the units are widely available widely plugged in and widely being played. In many many cases by people who have no dog in the hunt. If it sucks they're going to say it sucked. Over and over.

Yes the tracking for the dual shocks isn't pinpoint - there is a fast reset button to re-orient them. The headset tracking is good though. whatever tiny percent it falls short on is not in itself going to make anyone sick. If you want to make a big song and dance out of mis-tracking you can certainly do so by playing around when there is a drift or disconnect and having a laugh. Or you can just play within its limitations.

I had two kids and myself playing for an hour last night various things and only once did I have to stand up and reset the dual-shock because youngest kid - who holds it at like 2 ft off the floor - found it got out of sync. Maybe we should of pantomimed at that moment and made a funny video showing the mis-tracking and uploaded it to youtube for lots of views? dunno.

Anyway what I'm saying is I don't see the obsession with GBs impressions and why they should set the tone because this is a retail unit anyone can look at a wide range of experiences and decide without worrying GB has the right view and everyone else more positive must be wrong.

I'm not saying don't trust them, i'm saying don't let this stream be the only one to colour your preceptions of VR. Especially with GB's outlier tracking issues.
I love giant bomb, their they goto gaming site, but their opinions on things sometimes don't reflect my own experiences.

I've tried mobile VR, PSVR and Vive, and I only consider mobile VR to be comprimised. the 3D isn't very good, lack of positional tracking, and no controller support.

PSVR and Vive feels suprisingly close considering the price difference, the displays are comparible enough, where PSVR is more comfortable, and has better sweet spot, while vive is higher res. Controller tracking was way better in vive and so was the room scale - but PSVR's solutions are good enough to not make me hungry for more vive.

This VR push reminds me a lot of Sony's 3D push and their motion controls push. Does anyone remember that Uncharted 3 had 3D support? Or that Killzone 3 had Move support? They were forcing all of their devs to implement that shit, but eventually nobody really cared, gamers and developers alike.

With VR it's even worse. You got the mix of not having worthwhile content plus a plethora of technical issues specifically related to the hardware itself. And it's been six years later and we're still using Move controllers. And guess what, devs still haven't figured how to put those things to good use. We're playing in a "virtual reality", but a lot these experiences are essentially the same as what we got in the Great Waggling Doom of 2010. But now we can move our head around! Yay.

Maybe one day VR will be a thing in gaming. But not today.

The technology should tell them it can't see them. It is not user friendly to make getting the tech to work consistently a guessing game of lighting and spacial positioning.
