Looking over the footage and the available materials again, they did a much tidier job this time around of communicating all kinds of subtle reassurances instead of confusing everyone like they did with the Wii U.
- That you can swap from the TV to the portable mode on the fly with the game still running.
- That the portable is entirely untethered—take it out to the park, to the street, without worrying about the range from the base station because the actual processing is in device in your hands.
- That you can use the pro controller in the portable mode, and indeed swap control schemes this way and that regardless of which mode you are in.
- That the pro controller has the classic D-pad.
- That multiplayer works with multiple systems as well as split-screen.
- And all of the new software, of course.
The one thing that worries me is that we haven't seen any sign of gyro control—which control schemes support it, if any, and which ones won't. This is likely to affect my choice of whether to play Breath of the Wild on the Switch or the Wii U. Given the lengths to which Nintendo has embraced subtle motion control as a form of refinement in everything from the Zelda remakes to the very core of Splatoon, I would be surprised and disappointed if it were flatly abandoned. But I could also see the marketing case for not showing it off until we see the fine print.
Things I'd like to know about:
- Battery life and charging options (I would hope and assume you can play portably with a power cord, as when you're travelling or pulling long sessions off-TV, without depending on the TV dock)
- Gyro aiming
- Backwards compatibility with older Nintendo controllers, for home multiplayer (given the layout, it should be possible with the Wii U Pro)
- Protective casing for the screen on the go
- Integration with the existing account system (e.g. Virtual Console library)
- Save data system (in particular, whether data is written to the game cartridges, and how transferrable it is)
- Dimensions—it seems very small and I at least want to see a side-by-side comparison of the screen with the Wii U GamePad's
- Price and SKU options, obviously
