You can't tell about the resolution, but Skyrim and Zelda appeared to run less smoothly on the handheld

Yikes, may take a wait and see approach with this one. I don't really know why I'd play the handheld version if it's an inferior version (I don't play games when i'm on the go), and I already have my PS4 (soon the pro) for my couch experience. Hopefully Splatoon, Smash, Kart (ports), and then Zelda are all there at launch. Nintendo really needs this to do well...

Interesting concept even though I don't really travel with portables. That's not a big selling point for me though playing off tv could be. The exclusive game selection will be the biggest factor.

The system looks well designed and expensive(?), so the price will be a factor in it's appeal.

It seems like all the un-clicking and re-clicking for attachments and docks could be a potential wear and tear risk. Not really a fan of the name.

I'd like to know when the rest of the reveal is pls thx.

Please don't be january lol. At least we got a glimpse of the new mario.

Happy to see the kept it simple. The online store and backwards compatibility is going to be the make or break for me. So many nintendo games i haven't played since gamecube era. No sign of touch screen so does this mean nintendo still releases a seperate 3ds successor?

If you think of it as a console, it's really not all that different from the Wii U in so many ways.

If you think of it as a handheld, it has a promising future in Japan and could succeed in the U.S. and elsewhere given the lack of competition in that space.

Smartphones and tablet though...

The name is fine... but this looks like the Wii U, I can't see anyone but nintendo fans getting this. That thing doesn't look portable at all.

I love nintendo games, but they are just terrible at console hardware.

I could see 3DS continuing to sell because this looks like a Wii U replacement not one that covers both.

After watching this trailer. I can definitely say Nintendo has clearly learned from everything that went wrong with the Wii U. First and foremost, the name. At first, I was a bit unsure of the decision to have Nintendo's name in the finalized title, as I wanted the system to stand on it's own and not have to leech off an old brand name because Nostalgia. But Nintendo Switch actually has a pretty nice ring to it. The Nintendo name actually compliments the concept rather overpowers it, plus at this point, anything would've been better than "Wii U". Second, the concept. The Switch clearly has a lot more thought put into it's gimmick than the Wii U ever did. The Wii U was a trainwreck of jumbled, underdeveloped ideas forced into a confusing, poorly designed package. But the Switch's ideas are much like the Wii, In that it's simply just one idea, used in a variety of applications. And the different concepts they showed all make sense for gaming and don't come off as underdeveloped, or pointless.

Which brings me to marketing. Now granted, it's only a 3 minute trailer, but what we have seen is still much cleaner and simpler messaging than with the 2 E3s the Wii U had. Everything they had to show about the system is shown off, and the gimmick never feels like it overstays it's welcome like the Wii U trailer did, as again, it's simply just one idea executed in multiple ways, rather than some cluttered contraption filled with useless technology that nobody knows what to do with.

There's still a lot we don't know about the Switch and Nintendo will probably doulge out more info as in the coming months leading to it's release (at least, I hope they do). But so far, this is about what I expected. Nintendo Switch is the new Sega Dreamcast. No, not in the sense that it will inevitably fail (though that is an unlikely possibility), rather it returns the company to what made them popular before, and fixes the mess that it's predecessor made. The difference being that Nintendo may have a bit more time to amend their place in the market than the poor Dreamcast did.

THIS aspect is what will make the console a success.
It's what i was telling i would have done.

Very excited for this too. This console combines the best aspects of Online, Local MP, and LAN Play, without any of the drawbacks:

  • There's no extra "portable" console to purchase. Buy 1 console, you can play it at home/TV or on the go.
  • No split-screen: everyone gets their own full screen. Essentially a LAN party.
  • No more "console-lite" versions of games you have to buy separately. It's the full game. With full controls.
  • No more split userbase between console and portable versions of same game. If you want to play Madden on the go, you can play with "console" players.
This is the first true console on the go. It's what the Vita should've been. I'm beyond stoked for this thing, and I never thought I'd say that about a modern Nintendo console.

Bravo.

I love the click sound effect in the logo animation. Such a clever way to incorporate the console's main feature in to the logo, especially when combined with the name.

Nintendo's always been good with stuff like that.

I doubt you'd release a screen that big in 2017 and not have touch. People just expect it now so it's not in the sizzle reel. Same with gyro.

This has me cautiously interested. I bought a Wii U even though barely any of the games appealed to me (apart from Mario Kart and Little Inferno), and when I traded it in last month I felt ready to give up on Nintendo. I'm a big fan of handhelds, though, so if the Switch has a steady stream of third party/indie games -- no sure thing, obviously, considering their track record -- I could see myself picking this up.

Talked with a friend this morning via IM about this preview. This was his reaction:

my thoughts:

oh boy a mediocre shit tier "console"

oh boy another electronic gagdet i have to carry around in addition to phone tablet laptop and whatever else

those controllers look fucking stupid

games library will likely be shitty ports and shovelware and nintendo sequels

Swearing and hyperbole aside, I kind of agree with him.

I can't fathom using the little controllers for a multiplayer game, yet that pretty much drove the entire design of the console. It just doesn't seem to me like people are really going to use it like that. Strange.

I also don't know what use case there is for using it as a portable. It's too large.

I need to see more of what's on offer, content-wise. This doesn't feel like a device I need yet, considering my current PC/Console/Tablet setup. I don't really travel to just sit around and consume entertainment, and I carry equipment that already has (solid) gaming capabilities.

I would say it's pretty stupid. looks like a pain in the ass for portable and that screen is just asking to be destroyed. We'll buy it as a home console though.

No different than smartphones or tablet screens.

People use tablets as portable that are bigger than this.

Smartphones and tablet though...

Not very many people play real games on those devices, though. It's all Candy Crush and Game of War shit that drives that.

There's a reason that 3DS launched right in the middle of the biggest growth node for mobile gaming and still sold 60M+ units.

lol another one of these trailers that thinks all 20-somethings live in fancy brooklyn apartments or at least aspire to

anyways i'm actually pretty uninterested unless that Mario game is more 64 than 3D World.

mainly i'm just glad the speculation threads finally have less of an incentive to exist.

A little surprised there's no Dpad by default. Guess it'll be an accessory. I sure hope lots of the classic downloadable business makes its way over like Spelunky etc... looks like a super compelling package!

Well ok so this was basically exactly as the rumors suggested to the last detail. It's kind of telling/depressing half of the ad was footage of a literally 5 year old game, does not exactly inspire confidence on the third-party relations front. The name - let's put aside the fact it's an exceedingly generic dictionary word - feels a bit like it's going against the idea they are going for? Switch implies change, difference - the concept here is obviously a smooth transition from one environment to the next, the message is muddled.

I guess I am just disappointed this is the 3rd time in a row they have played the "gimmick console" card. Maybe they will luck out and catch that Wii lightning-in-a-bottle again, but at legit no point watching the trailer did I think wow, this is a game-changer.

I didn't see any kind of headset peripheral or voice chat showcased in the marketing video.
They did hint at esports or whatever with the splatoon teams, tho. Immediately I wondered how they could all communicate in a team game without voice chat.

Does anyone know if Nintendo has talked about this? It's sad that we even have to ask, but given Nintendo's history of choosing not to include voice chat on their platforms, it does beg the question.
