Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Any issues with DSE? I know that basically every LED has it but how is it compared to other brands/models? tia

nvm:
Gray uniformity is average on the X800D. The corners and side of the screen are a bit darker, but the center remains fairly homogeneous. Dirty screen effect should not be too much of a problem even for those watching sports like hockey, where it is usually very noticeable.

I always forget how great and thorough rtings reviews are

Oh, and how reflective is the screen? Does it at least have some kind of anti glare filter?

Been reading reviews on this tv, i'm guessing the 43" is still at $650 more or less? (trying to find a place that i can pricematch at Best Buy since i have a $400 giftcard there.) Tv sounds nice and would probably be great as either a small living room/bedroom tv. I also have a Xbox one S and planning to get a ps4 pro so i want to see what HDR can do for me.

try open box Sensui.....got mine for $520 at BB and haven't had any issues with it at all.

just google best buy open box and you should get their warehouse search on the website

click TV's and scroll through or search for it

Nah, a ShieldTV fits fine but PS4/XO or even Pro: no way. Unless you put the TV on the console haha.

Yes, it also communicates 1080p as native. Do you have any links re: actual danger of damaging hardware by this soft mod? But yeah, making noise for proper edid update is probably the best but not sure how much manufacturers care about that sort of thing... let me know when you finished the post, I will +1 it or whatever system they use :D

Irc I read that on the nvidia support forum, someone was having problem with their monitor and have to use CRU to get the correct native resolution working. Messing with manufacterer setting is always dangerous. I will probably create the topic at sony support after I got home from work....in like 12 hours.

I have both the 43" and 49" inch models on my watch list in case they get a good sale during Black Friday. Hopefully somebody can answer this: is there enough of a gap/room to fit a PS4 under this TV?
My current TV base is set high enough that I comfortably fit a PS4 under it.

Is this a feature on Amazon or another website or are you doing this manually? I might consider picking this up for a good deal on Black Friday.

Also is there a 59 inch version of this?

Does this tv not pass a 5.1 signal through it's optical out? Only have been able to get a stereo signal so far.

yes it will passthrough a 5.1signal but it needs to be DolbyDigital/DTS. uncompressed PCM will not work.

That's totally normal, almost no TVs will take HDMI 5.1 audio and sent it out via optical.
Presumably it's because of HDCP

most new sets do

the 800D does

I just bought the 49" model of this TV from Curry's this weekend. In the UK the model number is indeed 43X800D.

Also for those that have this TV, how does 4k upscalling work exactly? is any 1080p signal plugged into the TV automatically upscalled to 4k? Everything ive played so far looks really crisp, especially Gears 4.

Also, I tried HDR mode but I really didn't like it, made everything look way too over saturated. Its probably because I used it on games that aren't HDR supported? If so i would really like to see what the whole HDR fuss is about in person.

All this 4K/HDR stuff is so confusing.

Yes and No. 4K televisions are always upscaling otherwise they would not fill the screen. So the television is alreay upscaling the image and X800D has Sony's more budget but still amazing 4K X-Reality Pro processor. Whereas the top bigger flagship sizes have the best in show 4K HDR processsor X1 which is perhaps the best tv upscaler on the market. What you're seeing is your images upscaled. And if it looks poor it is because the source content is poor. Try a Blu-ray at 1080p and see the difference than a 720p/1080i cable signal.

There is only so much that can be done to improve the image though. HDR is definitely worth it. Try and see native HDR content. You will see the difference.

What is HDR10? Is there better and worse HDR?

Yes Dolby Vision is 12 bit HDR and is the ultimate HDR spec and is currently better than HDR10/UHD Premium spec. Very few televisions on the market can achieve these specs so far. The X800D falls short in terms of quality HDR. It is still massively better than no HDR but these sets are more budget oriented 4K and HDR and yet with no local dimming or backlight dimming they also are not able to hit over 1000 nits of brightness. I think the X800D does not hit over 400 nits. You will still aee a decent difference over non-HDR though. This set is pretty solid so far especially for the price and at the 43" and 49" sizes, I think only the 49KS8000 and above models are better than the 49" version of the X800D which costs a fraction of their price.

To get rid of the "featured apps" section, go to settings>apps>system apps>sonyshelf and turn notifications off.

Just got this model today and it's a huge upgrade from my budget 1080 Sony Bravia! I'm happy with it, now waiting for Pro!

Anybody else waiting(and hoping) for a black Friday sale on this model? I hope some places like Amazon or Best Buy decide to target this one for a sizeable discount. I'm looking for a 40 or 43 incher at no more than 400 since it's for my bedroom. I'd be willing to pay a little more, but only for this once since it seems to meet all the criterias. But 400 would be the sweet spot for me if possible.

Sorry If asked already, but how do I know which is the corresponding model number for the european (italian) model?

Is playstation vue included on the apps?

Unfortunately not the only two streaming platforms Vue is unavailable on is the Apple TV and Android TV.

There is an Android version but it's only on the Fire TV platform and mobile app.

You could cast PS Vue from your iOS or Android device to the TV.

Bought the 49" X800D and traded in my One for the One S. All my boxes are checked but something still seems off. I was expecting Forza Horizon to really shine but it actually looks worse. Seems dull and less vibrant. I have it on game mode but the calibration tools on the xbox don't help. Example: Xbox says turn brightness up and then down until the image on the right disappears. The problem is it never appears. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong.

Enjoying this TV a lot. Really shines in fast motion scenes. Just stays crystal clear without blur so nice. For 650 this thing is such a steal.

I dunno. You are essentially asking for basement-bargain technology on newly-included features.

Change the Color Mode to Neutral
Move Brightness bar to 90-100
You can also set the Enhanced Contrast to Medium or High

Hey guys, so I have a quick question. I'm going to be purchasing a Premium HDMI cable to enable HDR on my PS4 (apparently Titanfall 2 will have Pro Features, which I assume includes HDR on disc). How will I know if HDR is working on my set? Even with specific Netflix programs that support HDR. Is there a notification on the TV? Thanks guys!

Best,

The banner at the top that pops up when the input is changed will be more "solid" and grey rather than black in HDR mode since it's still SDR.

You can also check for the HDR icon in Action menu > Picture settings. It will show up if the input source is set to HDR content.

Still enjoying it weeks later. 43 inches is perfect for a small room. I'm always skeptical of "This is a GREAT *insert product here*!" ads or promotions, but this one actually did turn out to be great. Best price/quality ratio out there right now, IMO.

Doubtful. The X800D has Sony retailer pricing in NA at least. From what I have heard with friends who work at London Drugs, Best Buy, they cannot change the price themselves. Only Sony can tell the retailers what it will sell for. This is why the television isn't available at Costco. You might find the X700D without HDR and a wide color gamut for that price. But definitely this television isn't going to be $400 anytime soon, if ever.

HDR is automatic and will change your picture. The display will show HDR and even apps like Netflix will show HDR at the top instead of HD or Ultra 4K HD. Plus I think you can always click display on your television remote and see what the details it shows are.

Further to the previous post, this is how you can see whether you are watching 4K or HDR. If you press display, you get the screen showing your resolution and audio ie. 2160p And for HDR, you will see when you click action menu and picture, HDR will be highlighted.

So when I'm in YouTube and viewing an HDR video in the TV apps it doesn't say HDR even though it says it's in auto in advanced settings. Switching it to On really changes the colors but is this really HDR or am I just enhancing everything by turning it on?

Don't think it works for youtube? Haven't seen any HDR content myself through youtube. Do not know if they have anything for HDR besides 4K. When you click action menu and picture adjustments, HDR needs to be showing like it does in my picture above. The logo right above picture mode. If it doesn't show, it means the native HDR isn't being displayed.

this is odd. My set doesnt show that HDR icon when watching content. any idea if the X850D models dont show that?

what happens when I watch HDR content is the picture mode auto changes and the "picture mode" is greyed out Showing HDR Video.

Really? I thought YouTube supported HDR? Sony has demo videos up saying 4K HDR. Maybe it just doesn't detect it as an HDR signal even though it is? Non HDR videos with HDR on doesn't look right but it does on their demo video.

I think you are just manually adding HDR quality to a non HDR source, sort of like Live Football Mode to a football game turns it to Sports and increases the motion ability and changes up the sound. HDR being set to auto means your television automatically recognizes HDR sources and turns HDR on for HDR signals. If you manually turn it on, it just oversaturates non-HDR things all the time no?

YouTube promised HDR support earlier this year but I don't think anything is out yet. I would love to be provwn wrong but all the 4K demos and HDR demos I've seen are just demos that do not activate HDR mode as it isn't an HDR signal. If you manually turn it on, you can mimic HDR in a sense. But it is sort of like upscaling 1080p to 4K versus native 4k.

When I watch Netflix content with HDR, the television automatically handles HDR on/off and as you can see it is the logo when automatic?

I'm not manually setting anything on. I click on a HDR show like Marco Polo and the TV automatically goes to the HDR video mode and its greyed out. I switch back to an older show like TopGear and it goes back to Standard Mode.

how would I go about making it function like your describing?

What version of Android is this TV running on?

My X8508c is still on Android 5.1.1, wonder if this one is on 6.0?

"It is even higher with an HDR signal, since when an HDR signal is detected, the TV switches to a special HDR picture mode that can't be change.

This could maybe be fix with a firmware update, since other newer Sony TV like the X800D can display an HDR signal without having to switch to a special HDR picture mode, meaning that even in game mode, you can still display an HDR signal with a low input lag."

This is what rtings has written for your X850D. It seems it is automatic for you and you cannot change it. Maybe the X800d televisions as they just came out 1-2 months ago are running a different firmware build? Your television does hit greater HDR brightness and has the same 10 bit panel but also has the X1 reality HDR processor. So I think if your television changes when you watch HDR mode. It is automatic. If I turn HDR on manually for the X800D it makes the content look overblown and saturated because it does not really know when to use it. I turned it on and off manually for the Do Over and with automatic HDR and HDR on, it made no difference.

Android 6.0.1 I think.

apparently all the other XBR models are getting an update this week.

AVS Forum:
According to a reliable source in AVS Forums, an HDR Gaming update should arrive next week, with Marshmellow following later in November.

For x850D, the tv will switch to hdr video picture mode when hdr signal is detected. That is on every input even usb hdr videos. There is no way to change it to anything else on the current fw, it is also running on android 5.1. X800D is actually shipped with android 6, newer firmware and processer with VP9 profile 2 hardware support which is required by youtube hdr. Sony that cheap shit cheap out on half of their 2016 line up like the x850D, x930D & x940D and shipped those with 2015 SoC unlike what they have promised @ this year CES so those model might not get youtube hdr support like they have promised.
