CNBC: FBI's Comey opposed naming Russians, citing election timing

I'm not one bit surprised by this. And I don't mind it either. In this instance Comey is doing what he's supposed to do - hold onto to information for fear of interfering with the election. The only time that it's reasonable to reveal it is if the FBI finds something so compelling or time sensitive that has to be released to the public.

I mean specifically hard evidence that the FBI is holding onto, because that's what Reid was suggesting.
Probably, but it's probably not completely definitive either. We all know that Russia is doing things behind the scene to benefit Trump, and it's only likely that the FBI knows more about this than we do.

Comey fucked up, bad. But honestly it's looking more and more like he either owes someone a favor or whoever it is has compromising pictures of him. Because there's no way this makes sense and he takes the fall for something so obviously stupid.

His ass was on the line with the Clinton email scandal. Where as, he's not linked to the Russian investigation at all. He basically didn't want to have people question his integrity in case the existence of new emails leaked. Seeing as how leaky FBI has been, especially with the rift b/w D.C and NY FBI offices, he figured it was a matter of time before it got leaked and went ahead and disclosed it himself.

All of that was done to keep his reputation in tact, which is ironic because that actually blew up on his face. At least with the emails leaking, he could've pointed to the precedent and Justice Department guidelines to defend himself against allegations from the republicans. Now he just looks like a biased republican.

Hey would this have anything to do with the FBI looking into the email thing again

Edit: Or did I misunderstand recent events?

I hate to be that poster, but is there a summary of WTF is going on since I haven't kept up with the most recent FBI/Weiner email things?

FBI, in the process of investigating Weiner for the underage sexting allegations, discovered devices which (possibly) have information that may or may not be pertinent to the Clinton email investigation.

FBI tells Comey this past week (after having known of their existence for a while), Comey rushes off to write a letter to the (Republican) Committee of Oversight explaining that his 'the investigation is complete' testimony may not actually be true. Soon thereafter, House Member Chaffetz retweets the letter's contents, and attaches 'case reopened' (which Comey didn't actually say).

Cue Media Frenzy, followed by (some) backtracking on their part due to the FBI not having any solid info yet (they just got the warrant for Weiner's computer...yesterday, I think?)

Now, Dems (and some Repubs) are accusing Comey of violating the Hatch act with his purposefully blank/vague letter.

And now, it's reported that in a similar incidence of the Russia hacking allegations (which are at this point tied to the Trump campaign, at least in part), he refused to attach the FBI's name.

Can thank this asshat if Trump manages to win the election. Such a shame so many voters are looking for reasons to not vote for Clinton despite her steely resolve in the face against relentless unsupported attacks.

Well, one is a criminal investigation of a presidential candidate overseen by the FBI. The other is not.

The CIA isnt allowed to investigate domestic matters right?

so pray tell who is in charge of the investigation you are saying isnt under the purview of FBI?

Considering everything we know about what happened the last 4 days, you would think to at least create a cohesive argument if you are going to defend Comey at this point.

... who am I kidding, lol.

Like a foreign nation tampering with the elections or like a state aid printing mails? I think only one of those actually is compelling and time sensitive. I apparently disagree with you on which one it is.

The only ones this sways are the ones who never wanted to vote for her anyway.

Thank you! Much appreciated.

As an outsider looking in to America (UK) I have always followed the elections fairly closely. I 'member from Bush -V- Al Gore onwards but this election is just confusing as. I am not following what is happening with these emails. I was more looking at the immense idiocy of Trump and ignored them.

Will they have that much of a sway on voters?

If true, this only makes Comey look even worse. He would be putting his own reputation and wellbeing above his duty and the wellbeing of the FBI and the American political process. It falls short of a crime, but only barely so. It's mind-boggling just how many reasons Clinton has to fire him!

No, according to surveys, they don't have much of a sway.

It's not a jailable crime, but it does make a good case for violation of the Hatch Act

Is the director of the FBI appointed or elected? If it's an appointment Comey should start updating his resume...

Well, one is a criminal investigation of a presidential candidate overseen by the FBI. The other is not.

And one is directly related to the election, as in, the Russians are specifically trying to influence it.

The other is only tangentially related, as in it might influence voters' opinions, like any other issue (tax returns, health, actual policy).

Wow.

Maybe that Reid letter actually had some factual basis and it wasn't just political posturing.

This story actually has some meat, perhaps.

Comey should go down as a testament to how Democrats do themselves a disservice every time they foolishly decide to "reach across the aisle" and appoint Republicans.. The GOP is toxic, and in its current form, anyone who affiliates themselves with the party should be as far away from power as possible.
