If Nintendo got rid of Toad for good, would you be upset?

How can you not like Capitan Toad?

I will admit though Toad's do fit some games better than others, but wouldn't want to get rid of them.

I don't think it matters that much. If it really bothers you, you should probably see a psychiatrist. It's just not that important.

Yes, because then we'd never get another Captain Toad game.
This + I don't want to lose Toadsworth.

If you're talking about taking the focus off of them as a collective, I'm on board with that. But there are individual Toads that are pretty entertaining.

The problem isn't Toad, the problem is when Nintendo (Miyamoto seemingly in particular) thinks yellow Toad, and blue Toad are sufficiently developed characters, and literally names them Yellow Toad and Blue Toad. There are a HUNDRED other names you could give them in English alone, just based on color, even more if you get more creative than that. But no, Yellow Toad and Blue Toad.

This was around the time that they were also making the excuse of no playable Peach because they'd have to do extra animation work for her skirt.

I did not have the highest opinion of them at that time for that. It really was a long road to 3D World.

Captain Toad was one of the better Wii U games, I loved playing as Toad in SMB2, and my Toad Amiibo that sits on my black Wii U looks great, so yes, I would be disappointed if they somehow got rid of him.

Doesn't that prove his point? Color palette swaps, and the occasional glasses, scarf, or hat doesn't really differentiate the characters very much. The addition of hair, clothing designs that stick out, and variance in silhouettes in TTYD adds a lot of personality.

I'm sure they're well written individual characters in the game, but it's still disappointing visually. Whatever character design rules that got written into the mario bible before Sticker Star was a huge mistake.

They don't have to get rid of toad, they just need to lighten up on their restrictions to making enough interesting characters to fill an RPG.

That's another thing....the toads in TTYD had way more personality than the ones in Color Splash. The toads in color splash, although they come in various colors, have personalities that blend and none of them stand out. I remember the TTYD Toads having distinctive personalities with individual background stories. But perhaps since I haven't played TTYD in almost 10 years I'm remembering this game too fondly and if I replayed it I would realize it doesn't hold up as well as I remember. I remember the writing and characters in that game to be top notch. I'm towards the end of Color Splash currently ( only one paint star to go ) and the story and characters have been mostly forgettable. Not even Super Roshambo is fun....its a tedious mini game imo.

Mario has been cutting down the population with those shrooms.

They're like weeds, stubborn litte bastards. Besides we got el capitan todd out of it.

I'm kinda burned out on Smash Bros., but there are two character announcements that would get me to buy whatever the next Smash game is on day one: Kevin Keene or Captain Toad.

No, I always choose Toad cause he gets all the bitches.

That's true in that they need to make bigger visual changes. Still makes clear that the picture he references is pretty much a lie.

Toad's head on a platter...

Toad's themselves don't matter, only their heads.
They consume Toad heads in Mario games.

They even gain strength from them.

They just call them mushrooms to hide the truth.

I thought this was supposed to be a Toad love thread, not another stupid argument about Paper Mario.

Love your Toad, don't hate other people's Toad.

No way. In fact I want every single Mario game from now on to feature Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad as swappable playable characters. Having the variety is great. And Captain Toad is too good to lose too.

I like the Captain Toad character a lot. The rest are completely fine. I don't think I'd like to see the character gone for good. It's just too iconic in the Mario universe.

There are different Toads in Color Splash, but the optical differences are much more subtle and less emphasized. Toads looking like these indistinguishable people is kind of the joke.

Color Splash's approach to Toads - and to a lot of other things, really - is different, but different doesn't necessarily mean worse. It's kind of a shame that a lot of people only look at Color Splash with the "Paper Mario should be an RPG like The Thousand-Year Door" mindset, when it's actually doing a pretty good job at accomplishing what it sets out to do. It's a fun game, really, I'd even say great. Might be my favorite Paper Mario, actually.

"Toads looking like these indistinguishable people is kind of the joke."

Oh man, just like in DMC when Dante says the white wig that falls on his head is stupid.

"It's kind of a shame that a lot of people only look at Color Splash with the "Paper Mario should be an RPG like The Thousand-Year Door" mindset, when it's actually doing a pretty good job at accomplishing what it sets out to do."

Considering that Nintendo basically told me and other people of said mindset to go fuck ourselves and buy the Mario & Luigi RPG games, I think the backlash is justified.

When I asked Tabata back at E3 whether we should think of the new Paper Mario as an RPG, she said: “This game is an action-adventure.” She then explained what many Paper Mario fans have already deduced. “I’m sure you’re aware that, at Nintendo, we also have another series called the Mario & Luigi RPG series,” she said. “And so since we already have that established Mario & Luigi RPG series, in order to differentiate these two series that we have running concurrently, we’ve tried to focus more on the non-RPG elements for the Paper Mario games.”

This is like Atlus saying "Persona is now a visual novel series because we already have an RPG series called SMT. Now you get to just go to school and that's it, no dungeons or engaging plot for you, also we replaced all of the characters with Jack Frost clones that joke about how they all say Hee Ho the same way."

Bingo. Using the same website I found the models for TTYD and Super Paper Mario. There are far more creative designs in the older games.

The heck? I thought Toad was a fan favourite from his introduction. It didn't take the Paper Mario series or Captain Toad for him to be great. I've always used him or yoshi in spin-offs from the beginning. I know many who feel the same too

I liked him in SNES and NES games but now he's a bit annoying. Actually all of Nintendo's characters are becoming more and more insufferable for some reason.

Except for the sex offender characters.
