Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

The brightness in this case is just the backlight. I would keep that maxed out for HDR viewing. For dim/dark room SDR viewing, this can be set much lower.

What is typically called brightness in most sets is is actually the black level in this set.

Black level and contrast (and backlight) may be set-up properly using a calibration set-up disc like the free one at AVS:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/139-display-calibration/948496-avs-hd-709-blu-ray-mp4-calibration.html

Yes, the 5040ub is a fauxK projector that does HDR< but it has trouble from many sources, including HDR from the X1S from what I have read. It is by far the most affordable way to get a large screen at this quality though.

Another generation or 2 and I will upgrade my 1080p projector, but they have to iron out some of these kinks.

Interesting. So higher 'Brightness' in addition to Contrast being set to Max as per RTs settings? I noticed they didn't really touch on what happens in HDR mode.

considering this as an upgrade for a computer monitor that is dedicated for gaming.

I would sit about 2.5 - 3 feet max distance away from this and it would function as a steam monitor, xbox one and ps4 (maybe pro) system.

currently using a dell u3011 which is annoying me due to the input switching errors.

I would like to upgrade anyway to take advantage of the 4k output from the newer gaming machines and the enhanced color palette.

current gaming machine uses a 980ti which I understand will be functional with 4k gaming but will likely be upgraded rather quickly if the distance is not an issue.

the question is as follows - does anyone use this (43 inch XBR43X800D) within 3 feet, how does it function as a monitor - and for 1080 input does it look like crap up close?

(the xbox one and ps4 look great on the u3011 - and the computer games look great at 2560 x 1600)

is it time to upgrade?

I use this as a iMac external monitor, and gaming monitor. It looks quite nice, best at native res. 1080p can look quite sharp as well. Currently, there is no other ~40 inch TV that has WCG, 10-bit and HDR, so if you want those 3 things, this is basically the only game in town.

Interesting. So this in addition to Contrast being set to Max as per RTs settings? I noticed they didn't really touch on what happens in HDR mode.

You can max out contrast and still not clip whites for SDR viewing, so thats why they recommend that.

I don't think you will find any settings for HDR calibration. Very few individuals can do it, and I wouldn't recommend attempting it either. I have fully calibrated 6 different sets including this one for luminance, greyscale and a few that had color management systems enabled and I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to calibrating HDR.

Basically, BT2020 is the full wide color gamut, but no display on the market can reach it, so accurate (<2%) color calibration is out the window. This is not really stuff to worry about though since no one can really do it, save a few professionals, and even among them there is still debate about how to properly calibrate for HDR.

For fun, i tried out ratings 10 point greyscale values and it came out worse than default settings, so if you do not have a colorimeter, no sense in using those.

Hmm OK, so you think I should play with Brightness, Contract and Black Level? I'm noticing that Uncharted 4 in particular looks absolutely terrible. Incredibly bright and blacks are gray. inFAMOUS First Light is much better as it's primarily dark.

Brightness (back light), contrast, black level, sharpness, color and hue may be done by eye using test patterns such as those found here: AVSHD-709

D/L and burn the AVCHD to DVD. It will output in 1080p, unlike a dvd when you play it on your PS4. The disc comes with a few chapters of tutorial video, where a couple of guys tell you what to watch out for. Color and hue will require a blue filter, but you can find this cheap on eBay or a photography shop.

Other than that, use ratings settings, but instead of custom, be in game mode. This will get you pretty close to a 2.2 gamma and within <5% color accuracy, typically.

I used the Xbox calibration took for brightness and whatnot. Even then, I am still not happy. I used to have a blu-ray of Joe Kane DV Essentials to help calibrate but I cannot seem to find it.

What I still also struggle with is wanting to play games with the artificially vivid colors, rather than the 'true' colors of what rtings and others have. I think once 4K+HDR content is more widespread, we can have a newer reference to go by.

It doesn't have the triluminous display, but still looks quite expensive. Is that the rate you plan to purchase at?

Similar, just 80 euros less. With Amazon IT and renamed models is so confusing btw understanding which models are people talking. I'm looking for a decent 49"/55" max 4k HDR tv with price tag of 1000 euros MAX. And I must make my selection from amazon: https://www.amazon.it/s/ref=nb_sb_n...rl=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=Sony+4k+tv

can anyone check the link and help me understanding which are the reccomended TVs from this topic? I'd be glad... thank you

People are saying that when you turn HDR on, on the TV, and feed it a HDR feed from the PS4 - things look washed out.

does this mean you should calibrate the tv AFTER you enable HDR on the tv and the PS4 and open a HDR game?

Just confused about whether to do this before you go through colour and contrast etc. I also assume you put HDMI Range full, on the TV and PS4 and all that stuff.

Doesn't TV size needed for a certain resolution depend on how far you sit from said screen? I mean at 6-10 ft away is a 70 incher really shining?

I play on a 47 inch 1080p in my bedroom about 6-7 ft away and it seems perfect. However on my 70 inch in my living room at the same distance looks horrid.I can imagine playing on a 70-100 inch screen you would need to have a huuuge indoor movie theatre to play at full potential.I mean I guess a 70in 4k would look better up close but I wonder what is optimal distance.

I have the 75" 940c and can sit up to 5ft away without problems. But normally I sit about 8ft away.

HDR mode only turns on when a HDR source is present, so you have to configure the HDR settings when the mode's actually on as far as I know.

You can't really calibrate for HDR yet. I'm not sure what settings people are using, but set up properly, HDR should not be washed out. I know it is not on mine, and I have only calibrated SDR.

thanks, what I needed to hear - ordered and upgrading my gaming area.

Anytime people say they get a washed out image the concern is the tv is set to RGB full and the ps4 is at limited. Set ps4 to RGB full And see How things look.

Has the 49" version of this TV ever gone down below 798$?
I'm really interested in this TV, but I'm willing to wait till black Friday.

No and it doesn't look like it will without Sony. This is a Sony priced model in NA. Meaning retailers cannot discount which is why it isn't available at Costco etc. Unless Sony discounts you won't see any massive or sudden drops. Black Friday is also a day for retailers to clear stock or 'get in the black'. This is a model that stays in very limited quantities. Check for yourself. Almost every store I tried to buy it in it was not in stock online or 1 model on hand besides the on shelf display. So retailers won't be pressuring Sony to clear stock with massive discounts etc.

Eventually it will come down but I don't see it happening soon as the television just came out at and at 40"-49" nothing really competes with price/quality.

Why does Sony care if retailers lose money on it? Brand devaluation?

Anyone else upscale PS3 games to 4K? For input lag it probably isn't great but damn it does a good job upscaling and looks great! Twisted Metal in 4K was darn good!

I was looking at 4k sets the other day and saw about 6 stacked on the floor at best buy in Soho Manhattan. I wonder if that's a sign of incoming sale because I see no point of putting full priced stock out. They also had ku6300 stacked oppisite of the x800d which was on sale.

Input lag is identical between 1080p and 4k HDR. Eventually, since Sony has done with practically every model so far, as this television just came out a few months ago, you might see further reduction with a new firmware update.

Could be, or could be that it is the Manhattan location, higher volume of customers etc. I am just saying what I heard. Best Buy and London Drugs advised me they couldn't do any discounts, and that they didn't have stock. I did buy almost 2+ months back so maybe stock was lower then as the television had just come out.

From what I can tell, all settings go across apart from Backlight which defaults to 50. I'm not sure if this should be left or not.... as far as I can tell there is no way to have two lots of settings for HDR/Non HDR which makes me think Sony expects them to be the same?

Probably the best demo material I have seen on Youtube is "Grand Teton 8K". Watch that and prepare for your jaws to drop only to realize it isn't even HDR coming through the display yet.

Watched that yesterday because you mentioned it was sweet.

Only problem was YT compression for the starry parts, but rest was sublime.

I don't think so. I tried looking for it. But yeah man I am in the same level as you. The HDR on this set looks too dull and washed out. I think maybe because ps4 doesn't have a HDMI 2.0. Also the very low peak brightness doesn't help. Perhaps when I get to try HDR on the pro in a few days I will have a better answer on how good the HDR quality is for this set. It's a 650 dollar set and we get HDR that alone is pretty big IMO. It's the best budget HD TV available imo.

I just got my PS4 Pro, so will be testing once it's all backed up. I was at a review event today and it definitely looked washed out but much more realistic. Not what I was experiencing with Uncharted 4.

Maybe it looks washed out because the brightness is at max with HDR and the black level is gray?

Just try to reduce the brightness. I will get my PS4 pro on thursday. The I can try it too.

Not sure if it applies to the set in the OP, but Sony just released a firmware update for their 4K HDR sets which reduces input lag in Game mode HDR.

Plus stability, obvs :)

Benefits and improvements:
Resolves the juddering issue when using a UHD Set-top box
Reduces input lag for HDR game mode (4K HDR models only: X85C, S85C, X91C, X90C, X93C and X94C)
Improves the stability of the TV

https://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/c...015-android-models-update-ver3533/KD-75X9105C

Just installing it on my X90C now. I hadn't noticed an issue with input lag but improvements are always welcome.

Brightness with 1 is still the same. Haven't tested it now that I know that Black Level is brightness on this set.

It doesn't. Those are models from last year, as designated by the C in the name. This years models all have D. Next years will be E. On a sliding scale of quality a W set is now theur budget, X has become their mid line which can range from low-mid, mid, mid-high, and Z is their flagship televisions now.

Sony is good at fixing things with their firmware. The input lag on the X800D is pretty good with 4k and HDR. So anything they do in the next few months to bring it down is welcome.

In the UK is it the XD 8088 or the 8077?

I have looked at the specs and they appear to be identical.

When someone technologically savvy gets this tv and a PS4 can they please post the settings they use for both? All these options are confusing... especially PS4 side. To go automatic or not. It would be super helpful if you could post them.

I'm going to start off with the rtings settings they posted; but I'll be at a loss for the PS4 pro settings. Especially as rtings settings weren't really for gaming so perhaps aren't the best

PS4 can be left at automatic. Does a good job of switching when necessary. It's the TV that we have no idea about. The rtings settings don't look good in HDR at all.

Depending on the size you should be able to get the XD83 or XD85 for the same price. I think the XD85 at least should be a little more capable?

Looked at this before. XD85 are 55" upwards isn't it and the XD83 has 100Hz refresh rate and motion flow being the only different, but apparently it is an IPS panel. The 43" XD80 is the only VA panel in the range I think.

Eugh by what I wanted to hear.

I'm sure some guys will report back on better versions when they get their pro's. I get my tv on Friday.

Looks like I'm going to keep the PS4 Pro on automatic on most things, except limited/full where I'm gonna force it to do full.

But it's the tv settings I'll need help with. What if the tv is on automatic for HDR abut the PS4 doesn't send it for some reason. HDR on the tv also changes some brightness settings apparently so will you have to recalibrate every time you switch from a HDR to non-HDR game if you keep things on automatic

How do people rate the TV as a 4K TV with HDR. ive looked at some reviews but im after impressions from here.

Ive been looking at this and the Samsung KS8000. but i dont think i can fit a 55" so the Samsung will be difficult to fit into my setup. same with the X8500 which looks the same but has 3D, also starting at 55" in Australia.

Is there a big difference between the Sony XBR55X850D and the Sony XBR49X800D besides the size? I heard the "dim lighting" or something is something the 55 has but the 49 inch one doesn't? I want to get one or the other but want to know if the extra $200 is worth it if there's better quality with the 55 (not just size difference). I want to order it tonight.

Rtings notes that the x850D has worse input lag (57.4ms vs 35 on the x800D) when doing 4K HDR.

I have the x850d and it does have a light sensor option that dims the brightness.

I turned it off cause I couldn't see shit in Alien Isolation, although I do fear burning a hole in my retinas from how bright it is.

I haven't really fiddled with the settings much.

The input lag coming from a monitor with 2ms is fucking stark though, damn...

Trying to decide between the 49" version of this TV, and the 55" Samsung KS8000. The price difference is about 750$ here in Canada, with the options available to me.

The Sony is a bit smaller, but sounds like it's nearly as good? Any major differences aside from size that would be worth shelling out the extra money for the KS8000?

Soooo what settings should I be using for a PS4 Pro with this TV? The PS4 is rendering at the right resolution, but it said something about changing the HDR settings on my TV. It currently says HDR: 2 in the PS4 which doesn't sound right.

Any help would be appreciated!

Turn on enhanced HDMI in the TV settings, plug Pro into HDMI 2 or 3 and you're pretty much done as far as that is concerned. This will allow 4K HDR.
