Clinton campaign didn't do tracking polls for the last month, ignored Michigan issues

For the love of all that is holy let's pray this never happens ever again. After Brexit and this, left wingers better not get as cocky or complacent like this anymore. I swear if this shit happens for the third time in somewhere like France or Germany then the world political climate will be well and truly fucked.

Terrible leadership since Republicans took control of both Houses in Bill's first term.

They are the minority in Governorships, State Houses, The House, The Senate. The lost the Presidency to an inexperienced buffoon and now will have more setbacks with SCOTUS.

Not entirely fair. They were gaining under Howard Dean's leadership. Then, they started failing again after Hillary's '08 campaigners such as DWS and Brazile took over.

When the stakes are high, always ask for the receipts. A lot of people just went on faith that everything was going great in the campaign.

Why do Democrats suck so much at the game?

I think candidates assume their message is enough to get people excited. Given that most of the country is in favor of gay marriage, believes climate change is real, and other progressive ideas, it's assumed that people will flock to the polls to support a candidate with the same stances. But that's not the case, as we've seen time and time again.

When the stakes are high, always ask for the receipts. A lot of people just went on faith that everything was going great in the campaign.

I lot of people were lured to complacency by talk that Trump was a terrible candidate. I imagine she would have run a better campaign against someone she had more respect for.

All the defenders of Hillary's campaign need to just shut it.

IT. WAS. NOT. WELL. RUN.

It doesn't matter if Trump's was worse or if she beat Bernie by a wide margin or whatever false dichotomy you want to conjure up. This was quite possibly the most important election AND the easiest presidential election for the democrats to win in our lifetime and she fucked it up.

Were you not alive when the Republicans had to run in 2008 with the economy collapsing around them after eight years of Bush?

What a monumental fuck up.

This is going to go down as one of the most incompetent campaigns of all time due to how badly they bungled what should have been a clear win.

When the stakes are high, always ask for the receipts. A lot of people just went on faith that everything was going great in the campaign.

There were polls done in every major swing state. They were all wrong. It wasn't just faith, it was bad data reinforcing bad conceptions.

Fuck her campaign team. People didn't donate their hard-earned money to see them piss it away on incompetent campaign decisions like this.

I can't even blame the pollsters or the media. You shouldn't need to be told that when your candidate loses the primary in a state, you should probably try to reassure them that your candidate's actually a good option.

The lack of outreach to working class white people in the Rust Belt was something that should've been done, but then we get into a discussion of to what level? How to allocate attention towards them, with the hopes of chipping away some of their votes, versus other more likely demos in hopes of further solidifying leads?

No, we create a thread calling them racists and we don't coddle racists so fuck em. Thats how PoliGAF rolls.

Not entirely fair. They were gaining under Howard Dean's leadership. Then, they started failing again after Hillary's '08 campaigners such as DWS and Brazile took over.

That's right. Then they shunned him due to pettiness.

Tom Delay was a huge asshole and criminal, but the GOP showered him with praise and high positions because he was effective, although his tactics were questionable.

Texas will remain Red for ages because of his antics.

Why do Democrats suck so much at the game?

One could argue the rift created in the 2008 primary was never fully healed. Hillary and Obama might have patched things up, but that doesn't mean their support networks did.

OFA was a force unlike anything US politics had ever scene. Obama got the largest number of votes ever for a President running for office. They revolutionized how campaigning would work in 2008 with the digital media strategy and comprehensive corresponding ground game.

The rub? These were all Obama people. These were OFA people. These weren't DNC people. DNC was still full of a lot of Hillary people. The people that ran two of the best campaigns in the history of the plant for Obama in 08 and 12 weren't the people that ran the 16 Hillary people.

Why? I don't know. Maybe cause they both already had their own people due to being rivals in the 08 primary. Maybe they never reconciled. Maybe Hillary had or wanted her own crew. Maybe the Obama people moved on to other things after the 12 reelection campaign was over. I'm not entirely sure.

2008 Obama campaign might have been blindsided as well

"Remember 2016" should be the default phrase for the next 100 years anytime any progressively leaning person takes anything for granted again.

These kinds of post are odd when not just her campaign, but the vast majority of the media, pollsters and users thought she would have an easy win. A number of these reactions, while understandably angry, are essentially trying to rewrite history to pretend everything that went wrong was obvious when if it was so obvious it wouldn't have happened.

This should have been a hint:

A consistent crowd draw

Outside of the arena, long lines snaked through the parking lot of the events center, resembling the huge crowds then-Sen. Barack Obama attracted in 2008 during his history-making campaign for the White House. Dozens donned the “Make America Great Again” hats the Trump campaign has used to market the billionaire’s unorthodox candidacy.

Look at how PoliGAF and HilLGAF acted, beating down dissenting opinions. Hell, at some point people outright stated that they didn't need to work with people in the middle or with Bernie supporters. Pure arrogance and blind belief in the cult of person.

I'm with her!

Meanwhile the other guy is like:

Make America Great Again!
We're going to bring back jobs!
We're going to stop the establishment!
We're self funding this campaign!

These 4 sentences alone probably did it for those turned stated.. All she had to do was go and visit those poor people and listen.

Tracking polls? Meeeeeh

Michigan? Fuck em

Holy shit, the extravagant fireworks show leaked and people are lukewarm on it. Set up a conference call to figure out if we should still go through with it!

If anybody bothered to read the wikileaks, they would know that this kind of stupid BS was almost all the campaign talked about

lol

Unknown reasons? Okay, what the fuck?

There's no question that her campaign screwed many things up but are you seriously suggesting that her entire political career was worthless and she didn't do any real work and only got as far as she did through nepotism? Like, seriously?

Apparently not. You gotta resort to mindless populism to get elected. Maybe it wasn't so much hubris, but overconfidence + overestimating the intelligence of people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it is still too raw. People are latching on to whatever perceived flaws are most prominent (ignoring what looked like the 13th or 14th closest state over the summer) because that's what it looks like the election hinged on.

Instead, she spent time preparing for the debate and trying to expand the electoral map. If she didn't have the most lopsided debate wins in modern history, people would be yelling "Why didn't you do better? Why didn't you prepare more? What a fuckup!" If she focused on only the imaginary Blue Wall, people would be yelling "Why didn't you expand the electoral map? What hubris!"

This is going to take time. She bet on having a comprehensive policy vision and a steady, tempered hand. People instead chose Trump.

LiberalGAF, in general, latches on to narratives not really supported by evidence. I donated to Bernie, I donated to Hillary, but I was one of the few in those last, locked threads, arguing that Trump had a legitimate chance and that professional statisticians actually really did know more than armchair forum statisticians. Liberals are goddamn fantastic and getting complacent. 2000, 2010, 2014, and now 2016. This is way too much of a pattern to blame on candidates, and we rely too much on generational figures.

Really, do we need to pull an Obama out of our ass ever decade to actually win some elections?

Just last week I saw a Vice news segment that was extremely biased in favor of her ground game against Trumps. I can't find a link now but it would be interesting to see now.

As someone not from the US, this fact just blows my mind.

He made that tweet back in June first hand. Secondly Obama campaign would have had the fucking numbers. That's what they were fucking good at.

DP's comment seems fool hardy now, and it was probably fool hardy even in June. He wasn't running Hillary's campaign though so I'm not sure what info he was basing that on.

Time/money wasted on states like GA, SC, and Arizona, which were all pipe dreams anyway, could have been spent on MI, WI, PA, and FL where it could have made all the difference.

This is likely oversimplifying, but it seems like the pursuit of a landslide win rather than shoring up the close/winnable states may have cost them the election.

Democrats (including me!) often look down on people who don't keep up with social changes. Adapting isn't so easy for many people but we label them as homophobes or racists or whatever else instead of talking and listening. I know I was guilty of that a lot through the years. I hope I learned my lesson and I hope the party did, too.

Not everyone on the other side is deplorable, even if it seems that way sometimes. Most are good people who are slower to adjust to change or simply liked when life was easier. They aren't villains but they're treated as such.

lol, if anything results from this election the Clintons are finished in national politics. Their foundation does good work though, that's what they need to focus on.

Yup. This election has firmly buried the political careers of the Bushes and Clintons. Kind of amazing in hindsight given how folks were joking about Dynasty Warriors: American Politics Edition last year.

Oh they're still acting that way, hop into the community thread and enjoy the nostalgic feeling of undeserved arrogance and being shouted down.

After the primaries, I thought that the GOP was a super fragile party that would probably disband in the near future while the Democratic party, despite the conflict Sanders had caused, was still solidly in control of itself and its constituents. I guess I was wrong.

I tried to tell people on GAF my home state wouldn't be in play for at least another decade. To get back to me in the 2028 presidental election. People tried to tell me GA was already purple. *Rolls Eyes*

I blame them and the media the most for this.

Hillary was a bad candidate as well. I'm not excusing her role in this, but she alone is not the reason why this happened.

You can add the FBI to the list.

Blurting out "Stop the presses! Corrupt Hillary is corrupt!" days before the election before quietly muttering "Whoops, our bad, nevermind" played right into Trump's groundless attacks against Hillary's character, and it's pretty safe to say that the damage from that made the narrow difference between a Hillary Presidency and a Trump Presidency.

Nevermind the fact that the FBI gave a heads-up on the incoming misguided bombshell to the Trump campaign but didn't afford the Clinton campaign that same courtesy.
