Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

Toggling HDR on and off while playing Forza Horizon 3 on this TV makes me wonder how I ever lived without this.

I think the hype behind HDR is totally justified.

Tho i cant go back to 1080p on Forza even with HDR. haha.

Game is awesome looking tho.

From what I can tell, all settings go across apart from Backlight which defaults to 50. I'm not sure if this should be left or not.... as far as I can tell there is no way to have two lots of settings for HDR/Non HDR which makes me think Sony expects them to be the same?

HDR mode does allow you to change this setting from the brightness default value of 50 (Max) to whatever you want it on. The value can depend on your room lighting conditions. Brighter rooms require more backlight, dim rooms less backlight for optimal PQ. So SDR backlight and HDR backlight can be set independently.

Have you tried Infamous Second Son or are you only judging these sets performance on ND games? In no way shape or form should ISS look washed out with HDR on. Its a fantastic implementation. ND HDR, not as good. Ot does appear that they have raised the overall picture luminance which is not how HDR is supposed to work.

Brightness with 1 is still the same. Haven't tested it now that I know that Black Level is brightness on this set.

Uh no. Black level sets black level. Black level may be set by eye using a se-up disc like the one I have previously linked to. The default value nails it on my set and did not need to be adjusted. Most TV manufactures do call this brightness, because in the old days there was no way to decouple the backlight from the black level.

Contrast sets the white level.

The brightness sets the back light luminance (intensity). Adjusting this to 1 or Min is good for a dim/dark room as it ensures those inky blacks.

1st set backlight, then black level and contrast.

Turn on enhanced HDMI in the TV settings, plug Pro into HDMI 2 or 3 and you're pretty much done as far as that is concerned. This will allow 4K HDR.

Make sure you are in game mode.

I don't know, this TV does beautiful things with a 1080p signal too. I'm shocked at how well it upscales!

inFAMOUS looks great. Everything else looks kinda trash. The issue is that a lot of games on PS4 Pro don't really tell you whether HDR is being implemented or not.. Obviously you can look based on changing HDR auto to on/off but it's still unintuitive.

I swear you said in an earlier post that black level controlled brightness on this set.

That must be the issue. I'm playing in a pitch black room with no windows. Should brightness be set closer to 1-10 on both SDR and HDR or is 50 what it should be on for a DIM room. I guess I'm still looking for clarity as currently, outside of inFAMOUS, everything looks washed out and not vibrant in the slightest.. It was the same when playing in the Sony offices too.

It really does! Specially when the XB1S scales things to 4k. But native 4k is just so much more crisp and nice.

Im excited to get home and hook up the Pro already.

How do you turn on 4K HDR? Trying to play Ratchet on the Pro and it says only 2k is enabled.

Eeeeeeexcellent.

Hopefully I can get one on Black Friday, and gonna play FH3 and replay Gears 4 in HDR. Awww yiss.
Modern Warfare Remastered is supposed to receive an HDR patch as well, right?

So this thing is gonna stay at $650 right?

Is that deal for the ks8000 still going on? I'm undecided but I wanna buy a TV soon

Could be a number of things..first thing I would try is going to settings menu on the tv, click external inputs and change hdmi signal format to enhance 4k.
I'm probably just really dumb, but how do you get to settings? Apparently the "action menu" button on the remote is not that, and I can't find the button on the TV itself.

Edit: Nvm, I got it.

I've been trying to figure this out for the past two hours...

I can't figure out where the settings are for the life of me.

Home button brings up an Android-like menu, keep scrolling down for a Settings box. It also took me two hours to figure out.

Black level controls the lowest (darkest) end of the luminance spectrum.

Most TV sets call this setting brightness.

Its just the terminology used, and Sony is using the most accurate terminology, older TV's and monitors used a rather misleading term, brightness, instead of black level.

My dim room backlight setting for SDR is 1. I also mostly play in a dim room, but I typically do have the backlight (brightness) set higher for HDR. I think you will see that dropping the backlight on UC4 will not fix the image being 'washed out'. That needs to get patched, IMO. On that note, I think it has not been mastered properly. A proper HDR image certainly should not wash out the picture, the average luminance should remain basically the same. This is not the case with UC4.

I don't have a method of calibrating for HDR yet, although a gaffer did mention that Spectral has recently released a cal disc. OFC, I don't use SpectraCal I use HCFR.

inFAMOUS has a really good HDR implementation. Uncharted, et. al. do not have as good of an HDR presentation as inFAMOUS. If inFAMOUS looks great (it does), your HDR set-up is fine.

Remember, the HDR i mastered by the dev. It has to be created, so some devs will just do better than others. Not all implementations will be equal, and hopefully, some will get patched or improve.

Finally got to try out my PS4 pro today. And can confirm the HDR doesn't look washed out no more. In fact it looks amazing. I guess it could be the ps4 didn't have a HDMI 2.0 input. Therefore HDR looked washed. But ratchet and clank looks fantastic now with 4k upscaled and HDR..

Did you switch to the cable that came with the Pro? Maybe it was the cable.

Ok now I've got my Pro. Playing Rachet and Clank and Imfamous first light mainly to check out the HDR.

As far as the Pro and this 4K set go the games look great looks insanely crisps and almost total elimination of "jaggies". But I'm more interested in the HDR and I have to say.........It looks OK. Was sort of expecting more of a POP. Was able to compare it better in First light as you can toggle it off and on pretty quick in the menus.

I stood in front of a car at night. With HDR off the head light reflection off the pavement was more of a white smear with not much detail with in that white smear. With HDR on the the headlight was had a thin white smear in the middle of the beam with subtler transition from light to dark where you can see more detail in the surface of the road. Just a bit disappointed the bright parts of the headlights or the powers weren't noticeable brighter.

The set is currently 729€ on Amazon.de (sold and shipped by Amazon themselves) if sb is tempted to pick it up at that price

Got it to pop a bit more bumped the gamma from 0 to 2. Plus a few other smaller tweaks. The last of us left behind title screen with the sunny window noticed a big difference realistically brighter and more detail. When toggling HDR on and off.

Got the wife to check it out and she too noticed a big difference. Quite happy now with this set and the Pro.

So I have the Pro and I'm trying to check my resolution but it says that HDR is not supported. Which is weird cause the 800D should have HDR. Is there a solution to this???

R&C's HDR looks the same for me on the 43" on PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Have you set brightness (backlight) and contrast (white level) to max?

If you find the brightness too fatiguing in certain games, you can reduce them a bit.

Enable Enhanced HDMI in the TV settings and make sure to connect the Pro to HDMI 2 or 3

Lots of reviews seem to criticise the HDR because the TV doesn't have decent local dimming. While they might be right when comparing to much more expensive sets, does it still look decent in HDR mode? I'd expect the black level to go a bit grey but that is probably OK during bright moments.

It's obvious that black is off-black when the scene you're watching has very little brightness to contrast with it, much like non-HDR displays. It's more unusual, and surprising to see how bright tiny groups of pixels can get for embers rising in smoke, neon particles etc.

You just want the black loading screens to go away quickly!

Well given that HDR relies on local dimming in order to be "HDR" (before talking about WCG) , it's a really fair criticism to have.
Another good example of why people shouldn't be buying TVs until they better understand what they are buying!

How can I play HDR videos on windows?

I tried MPC-HC but I don´t get the HDR Symbol at [Action Menu] -> [Picture] on the right side.(Is there any other way to find the HDR information?)
When i put the video on the USB stick, plug it into the TV and play it with the Video App I get the HDR Signal....and daaamn this looks awesoooome =D really different from normal 4K content.

I use the Xbox One cable that came with it, cause its the only HDMI 2.0 I have right now.
HDMI2 on the TV with enhanced Format.
43XD8005 (european/austrian version)
GTX1070
In the Nvidia Control Panel I have
3840x2160
8bit
RGB full

I can´t select 10 bit, even when I switch to YUV 4:2:0

Is this a proper configuration?
Any suggestions?

PS: The TV is awesome, everything is so freaking crisp =D
except the Steam interface xD

The KS8000 doesn't have great local dimming, but the difference between HDR and non HDR is mind boggling. It doesn't look decent, it looks phenomenal.

I'm looking for a 49" 4K Sony TV with HDR with low input lag. Looking at the some test results on RTINGS the Sony X700D range seems like it might be good for low input lag at 4K HDR.

Does anyone know what the model number of this TV is in the UK/Europe?

I think the US model number is XBR49X700D but I can't find out what it is in the UK. Is the Sony KD49XD7005 the equivalent or is that the same as the US' X800 range (or something else)?

Don't bother trying to get this to work. Most comfy way is to run a plex server on your PC and stream the video to the TV. I think it's impossible to get HDR video playing on Windows right now.
