KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Hi guys i got the tv but my better half has not experienced it, I want justify the price that I payed for this tv, does anyone know show or demo I can show her to wow her, especially in 4k hdr.

Thanks.

The Man in the High Castle has very bright highlights in its intro and overall good picture (brighter than your old TV was capable of). Its on Amazon.

Yes people. Get on that. This thread right here is putting this one to shame:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-oled-technology-flat-panels-general/2464874-oled-photo-thread.html

Show me what the KS8000 is all bout. I need to see those blacks. Only have a few hours into tomorrow to decide on accepting the shipment or not.

There's so many TV threads I forgot to link it here. Had them these pictures for someone else what was wondering about the bleed on TV in another thread.

Some pictures of your new TVs would be much obliged. Black levels, light bleed, etc.

Here's the KS8000, keep in mind obviously a picture is not going to be representative of the bleed in person. I think there's barely and in the pictures and I really can't see any in person at all.

In the pictures there's an obvious center band of light, but in person it's not nearly as apparent and the uniformity is fantastic.

After trying every setting in the book extensively I endorse this post.

What's your thoughts on color? Warm1 or 2?

This is honestly personal preference. For movies I go Warm 2 since it's closest to D6500 specs. For games, I think Warm 1 probably looks the most natural but I think I still lean towards Standard.

The idea behind D6500 (as far as I can tell) is that it's closest to how your eyes would see things in daylight. The problem is, video games aren't real life. If I look at a solid white object in real life outside, it's affected by the sun and the environment so it's not completely white. For a game though, if I look at something white, I want it to be white since it's not real life.

A long way of saying I prefer Standard but Warm 1 looks fine as well.

The two settings I'm still debating is Sharpness and Color Space. I've read that anything above 0 is enhancing the image above what is "normal" but I've also read its over 50.

With Color Space, Native definitely looks more colorful (PS4 main menu is a good test) but I'm not entirely sure if it's accurate over Auto which looks slightly more faded but may be more natural.

It's probably been said before, but make sure you turn off eco settings. I had it off for hdmi1, but when i switched to hdmi2 i had to turn it off again for some reason, then when i watched files of my usb, i had to turn it off for the usb slot.

Okay, I see a lot of confusion on here... Let me see if I can help some of yall, with some settings that those of us on AVS Forums have sort of decided seem to be good all around general default settings for HDR Gaming. I'll explain the reasoning behind some of the settings, as to make this as clear as possible....

FIRST - If you have messed with your White Balance or Color Sliders and you didn't have a professional actually do it, reset to default. You can not use other's settings for this, and any changes you've done are probably for the worst. You can only get correct values for these via software and a professional that knows what they are doing so they can measure your ambient light and whats coming off of the TV.

Now, On to the settings ( I have the KS9500, basically the newer model of the KS8000, same settings transfer over ) And this is for Game Mode, Not Movie Mode, So yes, there is a number to Sharpness for a reason that is still beyond my total comprehension. But 0 Sharpness blurs the textures out, and too much causes tracer lines and other distortion effects. There is a happy medium, so look for it between what I listed.

Game Mode: SDR / *HDR settings listed ( You have to manually change the HDR settings until Sammy gives us another save slot under the Game Mode Picture Setting )

Backlight 13 *HDR 20

Brightness 45

Contrast 95 *HDR 100

Sharpness 17 ( anywhere from 10 to 20 is good, but don't go over 20 or you will start to get artifacts and other image distortion )

Color 50

Tint 50/50

Smart LED High

HDMI Black Level Normal ( Put your PS4 RBG Range to Full so you won't crush blacks ) (Auto will not work, and causes signals to get mixed up and blacks to get crushed, must manually set to what I've posted to get accurate blacks.)

Dynamic Contrast Off *HDR Medium

Color Tone Warm 2 ( you can set this to another option if you prefer. You won't be getting more accurate colors though, but this is a preference type of thing as well )

Again, Don't touch White Balance

Gamma 0

Color Space Auto ( Used to have to be Native for HDR to work, but Sammy patched it for Auto to work, so it's best to do Auto for now )

Also, make sure you have your PS4 set to YUV420 so that you can get proper HDR 10bit.

For fun I tried your settings. I like the sharpness recommendation, but I don't like forcing the TV into YUV and the RGB into full. I checked the black level website I use and the squares were (slightly) less distinguishable using those settings compared to putting everything on Auto

Hmmm. Edge light is bleeding along the bottom right of the screen. Dammit. There's no fix other than replacing the TV is there...

It's not there when the area's black, but any amount of color at all and it happens. Doesn't appear to diminish with brightness or Smart LED settings. I'm pretty sure it wasn't there yesterday.

Ok. After some testing I am finally done.

Dynamic contrast : off

Warm2

Turns out hdr is no different aside from backlight.

I also realized maybe a little too late my brightness slider was down in game and fucking my game up.

Oops!

Either way. Hdr and ps4 pro gaming look absolutely amazing on this tv.

I hope this thread didn't give anybody the wrong idea although I'm sure it did. Sorry about that.

That's what I'm thinking as well.

Really looking forward to Zero Horizon in hopes that it's done properly for us.

Sharpness at 0 is what you want for normal tv/movie viewing. But trust me, do what I said in a game, and you will see some details pop out that you couldn't at 0. This isn't anything like 50 sharpness or something, its barely kicking in. 15/100 isn't anything in the long run, but it does add a bit to the image overall. It's all preference really, but I like for my rocks to show their divots and cracks :P

Here, made a video showing the artifacts when you dial up the sharpness, even to 17. Was flipping back and forth between 0 and 17 during the video and the artifacting is clear.

Here are my final settings. Found in OP. If anyone would like to clean it up into a nice and neat format for me that would be lovely.

Edit 2. Here are my preffered settings after 1 week if testing.

Here are my final settings for this tv. I will try to add notes, and talking points. I am just a casual gamer and this is simply done from reading on here, my own eye sight and using the wow disney disc

This is on the aaou 55 inch panel. Diff panels could take diff settings!

For gaming, movies and netflix

Picture mode : movie, special viewing mode game

Go to expert settings
I use backlight anywhere from 5 at night to 10 during day. My tv is beside a sunny window in the morning.
I leave brightness at 45
Contrast at 100. My calibration seemed like it wanted it even higher so def max this out imo
Sharpness at 0 from what ive read any sharpness is bad.
Color at 53 My setup wanted those 3 extra notches. May vary by panel
Tint g52r48 again, very small difference from default and may be panel specific
Smart led high. Im not sure on this one. Ive seen it reccomended being on high for hdr so im just going to det it and forget it
Make sure hdmi uhd color is turned on for your input
Hdmi black level auto. I trust the auto setting. Hopefully the tech does what it should
Dynamic contrast off. This should be off imo. If you want it on, go for it, your tv
Color tone warm2 industry standard
Gamma 0

Hdr for gaming!
This is bugged, you will have to manually up the backlight to 20 for hdr game content in gaming mode and back to 5-10 when you are done. Hopefully we get a fix soon
Set dynamic contrast to off.

If you want 4k hdr streaming on netflix you will need to use the tv app until the ps4 one gets an update.
For this i change my source from console to tv, movie mode, with gaming turned off. This way the tv will change the backlight for hdr on its own. If you go to settings, backlight you will see it will be jacked up to 20.
If you switch to a normal sdr show, it will auto put it back to your normal backlight setting
You will not get a notification like in gaming for hdr content
For this i used marco polo.
Dynamic contrast off.
You tv should switch between settings on its own between hdr and sdr content when in normal movie mode.
Do not forget that hdr mode will need its settings set, it wont take the settings from your other modes. So tune it accordingly. I also use the same color And tint settings on my movie mode
I leave digital clean view and auto motion plus off in movie mode.

My tv sound is on audio out/optical with bitsream and dolby digital for my logitech 5.1 pc surround i use
Ps4 audio is hdmi out, bitstream digital
Than optical from tv to surround.hdmi from ps4 to tv

Do not forget to use in game brightness slider. These were done on default setting in Uncharted 4

My ps4 settings are all set to auto.

All that said...

Do we have any opinions on auto motion on/off? I've seen some say setting them.to something like 3 in custom

I have a KS8000 hooked up to PS4 PRO and since last night my screen has started blacking out. So I will get intermittent black screens while playing games. Did the new firmware 1150 do this? I didnt have this before and I've played the PS4 pro for tens of hours.

What happened? :(

Kind of a general and possibly dumb question, but is 1080p120 support something that could potentially be patched in later via firmware update? I'm looking at this TV versus the Sony X850D, and even though the KS8000 is probably better overall, the latter supports 1080p120. While it's not exactly a deal breaker yet, I'm trying to decide how important this is to me since I'll likely be using this TV as a PC monitor as well.

It's extremely unlikely - since 2015 models Samsung is the default choice for "TVs to be used as desktop monitors" and they still don't support it so I don't see that changing any time soon.

This is something I just don't understand why is so overlooked by manufacturers. The 2015 Vizio P series had support for it but it wasn't really properly supported until later. (had handshake issues). But given how great it is for use with PC's connected its something I really want to see. The TV's have 120hz native panels so why the hell not? I'm glad you ask because it bothers me a lot too. From what I've seen Samsung amongst others doesn't seem to care though.

I changed the HDMI cable and it stopped happening.

Anyone know how to trigger HDR or find out HDR is indeed working when watching the Aamzon App.
The Grand Tour has HDR but nothing comes up on the screen nor does the backlight change at all.

Glad I'm not the only one.
I guess its down to Amazon to update the app to support it.

Anyone else with this TV able to try it and see?

I should elaborate, I do get the HDR notification when The Grand Tour starts playing but unless I have HDR+ on the backlight etc will not automatically adjust, the same goes for when I watch HDR content on Netflix.

What mode are you in? If it's in movie mode and it's HDR it will automatically adjust.

Guys can you clarify something. The KS8000 = KS7000 in UK? Also what are the differences between this and the higher models?

Yes I have the Netflix 4K plan.

And yes I'm watching The Grand Tour and it's the 4K/HDR version.

Sorry. Have no other ideas other than to factory reset and try it again. I've had the TV since July and have never had that problem. As long as it's strictly in movie mode and you don't have any other special mode like game mode turned on, it will automatically switch. Also to be clear, you're talking about the TV's apps and not the PS4 apps? None of the PS4 apps work right, but the TV's are great.

That's what I find odd: it's clear that the panel can support 120hz, so it should, in theory, be able to support 1080p120. I don't have the technical knowledge in this particular arena to know whether it's as simple as flipping a switch, so that's why I'm wondering if it's as simple as updating firmware or whether it requires a more complicated solution beyond that. It's disheartening to hear that Samsung hasn't expressed interest in 1080p120 support, so I have to ask what roadblocks exist in implementing it. I do wonder if there's any way we could make enough noise to get them to consider implementing it--or even if there's a way to hack it in.

Yeah I'm talking about the TV apps, I have no other special mode enabled.

I'm watching Daredevil season one on Netflix right now which has HDR right? My TV has not switched to HDR mode.

Don't think Daredevil has it. It will have the HDR label next to the 4k/UHD logo. Try Marco Polo.

Its down to personal preference. Setting it to 3 for each setting gives smoother motion with a minimal level of soap opera effect but the soap opera effect is still there. Some people like the effect some people hate it. I personally can't stand it.

Also one more thing to add to your post. Digital Clean View is a good setting for lower res content. For TV content 720p or lower or streaming content with a lot of noise it does a good job of cleaning up the picture. There is a loss of detail as a result but it is minimal. You don't want this on for high quality content or content where grain is supposed to be heavy as it will eliminate that grain and reduce detail.

Can someone please elaborate on how HDR is bugged for the KS8000?

From what I understand.

HDR - Non Gaming Mode/Media (Netflix App, Amazon App, 4K Blu-Rays...etc)
- If HDR is enabled in settings when HDR content displays on the TV the TV will automatically set backlight to 20.... and that's that. When HDR content is not being displayed backlight goes back to whatever the user had set.

HDR - Gaming Mode (PS4 games, Xbox S games)
- If HDR is enabled in settings when HDR games are being played the TV will NOT automatically set backlight to 20... this needs to be changed manually by myself. When HDR games are not being played, I then need to switch backlight down to 5-10

Did I get this right? Seems pretty annoying to have to change this all the time. I imagine this will be fixed in an upcoming firmware update?

What type of notification? The one that comes up when you start playing a HDR game?
I get nothing at all, it just plays saying its playing in UHD.

What firmware are you on?

Edit::
Oh shit, just put it in Movie mode and the HDR notification came up.

So, this question is for anyone, do I have to watch TV / streaming content in Movie mode in order for HDR to turn on?

I literally updated to the latest firmware half an hour ago in the hope that it'd solve my problem. I don't have a HDR game system but when I start playing The Grand Tour it says in the top left corner 'A HDR video is playing'.

Ok, I'm still on 1142, as I'm not updating the firmware until it offers a new one through the TV and not just on the website. And at the moment its just saying 1142 is the most recent one.

For me just now I did the following:

Switched from Standard to Movie (Had no idea this affected it)
Loaded up The Grand Tour and got the notification of "An HDR Movie is playing"
The backlight also automatically chaged to 20 for me.

The difference between what I watched last night and now is night and day.

I'm now blown away.

And I've just switched it back to Standard and restarted and I still get the notification about it being HDR.

So, honestly, I have no idea what I've done to get it working.

I still seem to have an issue with what looks like minor out of sync lip syncing, but I cant figure that one out.

Crap, there might be something wrong with my TV then :(

Since I got this set, I was always a major supporter of the "Dynamic Contrast = Medium" setting, but last night I changed my mind. For good.

Turning on Dynamic Contrast does indeed make the image way brighter, but that's at the expense of on-screen contrast in the image. It's essentially substantially lifting up all the shadows to be much brighter, and then it blows out the sky and other really bright areas. What you end up with is a much brighter image with much less depth.

I could still see using Dynamic Contrast in a bright room during the day, as HDR mode, even with a backlight of 20, is probably too dim in that environment.

But at night or in a light-controlled environment? Dynamic Contrast needs to be off. Looks way better.
