KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

My settings basically match the 1st posts and i'm quite happy with what i see so far.

Only change i have made is changing to warm1 when in game mode as i found the yellow tint a bit too high.

So glad LG's exclusivity for the NOW TV app is over soon and will appear on Samsung early in the year. Trying to watch this via the Xbox reduced the quality (probably because i couldn't be bothered to switch to movie mode)

You're better off playing with in-game brightness. This game doesn't need DC at all for me unlike infamous, which made me happy. I feared all hdr will look like infamous but it's not the case at all.

For SDR content, it is recommended that you set this to Off or Low, as higher values will cause loss of definition in dark/bright areas. For HDR content, Dynamic Contrast will make the image brighter. For HDR, recommend values are Low or Medium; Off will likely make the image too dark, while High may make the image too bright."

This is what I keep hearing mirrored in the AVS forums thread which, if I'm being honest I respect more than GAF's opinion simply because a lot of them have decades of experience in Home Theatre.

So it would seem...

For HDR dragon is right, for SDR content you're right TLZ. Dynamic contrast for HDR is dependent on the brightness of your room and the game.

Always adjust by brightness and contrast before having processing fuck with every scene.


Contrast = white level
Brightness = black levels


Yes it's fucking stupid how they label settings

Every professional review site I have seen that has listed calibration settings for this TV recommends dynamic contrast to be off. I would trust them over some randoms on AVS.

What's your room size? How big is the room? Tall ceilings? Angled ceilings? Budget?

In my opinion, if you're going to go for a high-end image, you need high-end sound to back that up. I'd look into Dolby Atmos sound bars. Atmos is true 3D sound, as compared to 5.1 and 7.1 surround setups which only do 360 degrees but on a flat plane around you. Atmos sound bars have specially designed upward facing speakers to bounce sound off the ceiling which can completely envelop you in sound. It's mostly used in UHD blu-ray's right now, but it has been making its way into games with Battlefield and Overwatch. However, I don't think Atmos is currently available on consoles for those games, but I'd have to imagine that will change over the next year.

I just can't believe this personally on HDR content in a bright room. I'm 100% on board for SDR content. But for HDR I'm in a pretty bright space and even with backlight panel 20 when watching the LG chess demo, Colors of journey etc. If Dynamic Contrast was off the image was simply too dark. If I turned the lights off it was great, but low, sometimes medium depending on the content was substantially better. I don't think everyone is going to play or watch in a dark room, in fact I don't specifically because it's hard on the eyes.

I do use DC medium for infamous though because that game looks very dark to me. I thought hdr looks like that across all games but when I played FFXV jp demo I was very happy it wasn't like infamous dark at all. Didn't need any DC. I tried DC high and my god it torched my eyes. High is just too much for that game. Anyone who tried both infamous and FFXV jp demo should tell the difference in hdr in both.

I actually emailed Sucker Punch about infamous dark hdr and they approved and found the issue and said they'll patch it very soon.

This is exactly why I decided to go with the KS9000 model. The KS8000 having the back unglued worried me. When I went to Best Buy and saw both, the KS8000 "felt" cheaper in terms of build quality.

Getting the KS9000 through the EPP Samsung deal for $1475 was a no trainer really.

I just got my ks9000 yesterday-I only ran through some of the settings; let me know if you end up wildly off from those calibrating for the ks8000-it would be good to compare notes!

My 860 would pass through 4K but not HDR. Think it's to do with the port being 2.0 and not 2.0a?

Totally I get this. Like I said it depends entirely on the content for me.For Ratchet and Clank I'm playing it in off. But each setting still looks fantastic and doesn't really crush anything. They just get much brighter which isn't necessary. But for the LG Chess video for instance, low looked best, off was far too dark. Medium was slightly too bright. So it seems to me it depends on the content and the room you're watching it in.

But in the LG colors journey the HDR caused some over-brightening in the whites with it on. Low was acceptable but off was best.
 
I have UK ks7000 and ps4 pro and am disappointed with hdr really. Ratchet,uncharted 4 and ffxv demo all look better with hdr off to me. I have everything set up correctly but I don't get the bright highlights or deep colours I was expecting.

The best game I found to do a comparison is the last of us title screen, the window with the vegetation. Look at the highlights on the leaves and detail of the leaves in the sunlight. It's almost like a resolution/texture bump the difference is that strong.

Green is supposedly the colour to get the most from HDR.

OP will not disagree with Warm1 for gaming. We had a discussion earlier about it. But would advise switching to warm 2 when watching movies or tv content.


All that's needed is crunchyroll app.


The fucking web browser burned my retinas last night when I opened it for the first time lol. I have no clue how you would even think of having DC on. I feel bad for some folks eyes lol


As for infamous being too dark. Use in the game brightness slider. Once set you honestly should not have to mess with your panel settings again. Your TV is calibrated for a reason outside of maybe two settings due to the way the set works in game mode.

Remember, brightness = black levels

HDR is made for watching content in darkness like in cinema. It's not made to be used in high brightness enviroment.

Thats Ok, it in limited automatically, so that a kind of 'fool proof' mechanism. Some sets like the Sony X800D still allow switching, which can lead to mismatch. Is this X1?

I guess some people are seeing banding on some games when auto is enabled on PS4, so keeping 10-bit limited should avoid this.

So I'm curious how games that are native 1080P like the base PS4 games, that wont be getting the Pro patch look like on this TV.

How is the upscaling? Will it look bad or nearly the same as on an 1080P set?

I don't want to upgrade to a 4K TV if old PS4 games are going to look bad due to resolution.

Slightly off topic but....

Anyone know if the legs of the TV pop out easily? I'll be moving soon, and will need to take them off for transportation of the set.

you just pull them out lol

They are not even clicked in or held by a screw. They just rest tightly in the slot from what it seemed on mine. Directions don't even mention anything else either.......

Based on the this thread, the 65" has a second slot for the stand. The first slot is supposed to be 52" difference. I'm wondering about the second slot? Does anyone know?
 
So a heads up, if you have your PS4 Pro set to 4k RGB, or Auto for SDR, apparently you're getting 4:4:4, which means you are increasing your input lag from 21ms to 37ms.
 
jesus this TV looks amazing. Upgraded from a 7 year old 47" samsung LCD to the KS8000 and I'm amazed at the image quailty. As long as the TV doesn't die on me, I don't see myself buying another large TV for the next 8-10 years. Very satisfied with my purchase.

Game mode doesn't reduce quality if calibrated. It just removes extra processing which isn't needed as these movies are super high quality and were made with literally millions of dollars. If you notice even in non game mode rtings basically makes you turn off all of the extra processing that you're allowed to turn off.

I saw one of the SUHD demo videos where they said they'd detect depth and enhance contrast there. To me that's stupid. If JJ Abrams or his production team wanted added contrast in a certain scene in force awakens he would've put it there! The image should be displayed as unaltered possible.

Not true. The only way to get true 444 is PC mode, which is where the 37 ms comes from. All other modes accept a 444 signal but actually convert it to 422.

Most of the tested inputs works except for 120Hz. To ge 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4, 'HDMI UHD Color' has to be enabled from the picture menu. For other resolution, labeling the HDMI input to 'PC' will do the trick. Input lag in PC mode is 37.8 ms.
 
Does anyone know how to get rid of the Samsung remote ad that has started plagueing the screen when I hit the Home button on the remote? I tried watching that shit but it still did not go away. This seems to have appeared after some time using the TV and it's just a video that shows how to use the fucking remote I have been using since day one!
 
Ive seen some videos posted here for good demos of hdr and 4k content. Cant find the names. Great Devide or something was one.. do we have a list going of some of the top hdr/4k videos out there?

The demo video from Samsung is very bad compared to the Oled LG. And they were side by side.

Although, a huge step from my Sharp Aquos.

I might jump in next Friday. I can only imagine it would look amazing for the PS4 Pro

But going from 12 ms to 30 ms is my biggest worry.

Did anyone notice a huge problem with this?

Yes I'm sure, I can tell the difference between game mode and pc mode lag wise. I currently have my gpu sending a 444 signal but I switch to game mode for the lower lag when I play overwatch. The PC still outputs a 444 signal, but the tv displays it as 422.

I absolutely agree on warm1. Flipping back and forth i actually believe imo, it is the correct setting.

Warm 2 is much closer to being the correct 6500k temperature. Warm 1 may look better to you because you are used to a more inaccurate colour temperature, and that is fine, but it's not the correct setting.

I am getting mine professionally calibrated in a few weeks so I well see exactly how close it is
