Fox has been trying to capture the same lightening in a bottle formula that made Alien and Aliens box office successes. So what needs to be done? Does there need to be more emphasis on world building rather than on action? I think the new Planet of the Apes have done a fantastic job in building its world. And while it has paid its respect to the earlier films, it wasn't unreasonably tethered to it. Some at Fox want to bring back Sigourney Weaver. I don't think that would be a productive direction if they're thinking long term. The first 2 Alien films had alot of things going for it, such as its iconography and its directors. Planet of the Apes was marketed around the star power of Charelton Heston. But in cutting him loose, they were forced to adapt to his absense and thus ensured its longevity.
Should they try to de-emphasize its horror elements, or at least try to decouple the expectation that its horror elements be ground breaking on the level of Exorcist? It can't be a horror film because that cat has already been let out of the bag. As for the action sequences, what films would anyone here cite as an inspiration to use in future Alien films?
I'd like these films to succeed, but the track record after Aliens is hit or miss.
