KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

I finally have some free time so im going to try and update the op. It got to be a mess, and i ran out of time.

If you have any links to great content, for viewing post them up to save me from scouring the pages,

Does anyone else have a problem with TV forgetting input labels? Mine forgets them every time it's turned off.

A minor annoyance.

On 1152, but HDR is not activating when I start HDR videos on youtube.

Edit: Hmmm I guess it is. My settings auto changed to 20 backlight etc, but I got no notification.

Here are my final settings for this tv. i will add notes, as some stuff is preference or varies by panel, environment and brightness.

This is on the the 55inch panel with a PS4 PRO. PC use different settings.

For gaming

Picture mode : movie, special viewing mode game

Go to expert settings

I use backlight anywhere from 5 at night to 10 during day. Set to preference and environment lighting, time of day etc
Leave brightness at 45
Contrast at 100
Sharpness at 0
Color at 50. A calibration disc will tune this number to your specific panel,
Tint 50. again, calibrate if looking for perfect settings
Smart led low/high is ok. Some people do not like high bc they see the screen dim during play
Make sure hdmi uhd color is turned on for your input
Black level auto
Resolution at auto
Dynamic contrast off.
Color tone warm 1 (xbox calibration reccomend this) this can vary by preference.
Gamma 0
Color space auto

Hdr for gaming!
This is bugged, you will have to manually up the backlight to 20 for hdr game content in gaming mode and back to 5-10 when you are done. Hopefully we get a fix soon
Set dynamic contrast to off. This can vary by preference. Off gives best range and detail.

Ps4 video settings all set to auto

If you want 4k hdr streaming on netflix you will need to use the tv app until the ps4 one
Hdr content outside of gaming will turn backlight to 20 .You will not get a notification like in gaming for hdr content

For movies, Netflix etc
Color tone warm 2. Industry standard
I leave digital clean view and auto motion plus off in movie mode. You can use digital clean view for clean looking 720p content if you wish

My tv sound is on audio out/optical with bitsream and dolby digital for my logitech 5.1 pc surround i use
Ps4 audio is hdmi out, bitstream digital
Than optical from tv to surround.hdmi from ps4 to tv

Tips.
Do not forget to check in game brightness slider far games with a new tv. I find defualt is best on most.
Do not forget to change your settings for all modes, including when hdr kicks in on netflix etc.
Turn eco settings off
Turn samsung light off it annoys you in system expert settings
Turn anynet off in system expert settings if you dont want tv to power on systems hooked up
Make sure you update to latest firmware

Anything i should add fix or change to OP?

So why should we use the tv app for Netflix and you tube over the PS4 pro ones? I thought the PS4 pro apps were updated for 4K?

One question, I loaded up Daredevil on Netflix (I have the 4K subscription) but didn't notice HDR. I am not used to this screen (and I have not calibrated it yet as I just had like 10 minutes to play with it this morning) and have never seen HDR in person so I don't know what to look for other than "more colors". Is there any way to check if HDR is on? And do you guys have a recommendation for a showcase of HDR?

Check your backlight settings while Daredevil is on. If it automatically switched to 20, then it's working. I think we're suppose to get a notification, but they don't seem to work for me outside of PS4 games.

Am I supposed to be able to access the HDMI Black level on PS4? It's grey'd out for me and the game say hdr enabled but doesn't look enabled. I followed settings on here with game mode on

Check all of your settings with my original post.

Hdr will look enabled.

If you still have issues post all of your settings and we can tell you what's wrong.

Hdr is details in the clouds. Light sources looking more realistic etc

Downloaded the update file from the Korean site, but my KS7090 does not recognize it on the USB (formatted to FAT32 with the upgrade.msd file put in its root).

Haines, you the MVP OP

As to the Eco settings, I believe there are two right that need to be turned off, correct?

Haines ...

Approved on the settings. Any reason for selecting Movie mode for the preset though? Is it doing or not doing something over the other presets?

It's annoying reseting the expert picture setting turns on the eco sensor all the time.

I just can't get away with film mode, warm 1 or 2. It just dosnt look right especially for games. Each to their own of course :)

I was told game was fine.

Than someone came into this thread and pointed out game diminishes picture quality slightly and even says so in the description when you select the mode.

So tbh I don't know and just switch to movie mode bc it takes little effort.

Got a question that might be more for the AV forums but I'll try here.

Do HDR videos play from USB devices like thumb drives?

I got the Koren update and HDR YouTube video's do work for me and change the settings properly when they start. My connection is only strong enough to pull 1080p though. So I tried downloading those HDR videos that worked to my thumb drive but when I played from there the settings did not change automatically, so I'm guessing it's not playing in HDR from my thumb drive. Any suggestions or am I out of luck till I upgrade my connection in the spring?

Hmm. I don't have a Game preset. Off the top of my head I have Standard, Movie, Natural. There might be one more. Under those there is Special Viewing where you can turn Game Mode on. Turning that on lowers the latency of the TV but degrades the image quality slightly (not really noticeable).

I don't think it matters which preset you use as long as the settings are correct. Does everyone else actually have a Game preset?

I think it has to be programmed into the app itself. I'd imagine playing from a USB drive it wouldn't just read as normal videos. I thought I saw a post here about viewing HDR from USB somehow though.

Game special viewing mode is actually it's own preset with separate settings that are saved

Sorry. I thought you were asking why do I use movie mode with game off for film and tv.

I use movie bc it's said movie is the closest to the best picture.

Unless you know of a reason to use the others.

On Samsung TVs, the 'Movie' picture mode is closer to our calibration goal so we always pick this first. To enable game mode, select it from the 'Special Viewing Mode'.

From the rtings calibration link

To me movie mode looks soft/blurry and too dim.

If you leave it at movie mode, yes, I agree. However, I've always set my tvs there and made adjustments after that. It took a few days of messing with the settings, but I'm in movie mode with a very rich, vibrant screen even for broadcast shows (not Bluray or Netflix, still haven't tried that stuff out yet). My whites are white, blacks are great, and overall color is fantastic. I'm still having some issues with motion, even after turning all the enhancements down, but it's getting better.

On a side note, does anyone use this with Directv? I can't figure out how to program my directv remote to power-off the tv. I can do volume, change channels, and power off the directv box, but still no-go on the television.

I really don't think Game mode degrades picture quality at all. The disclaimer that the TV gives stating so is probably just referring to the settings that become disabled; auto motion plus, film mode, or whatever the others are.

I only use Game mode for actually playing games, though. IQ aside, I noticed it causing the audio to be slightly out of sync (nothing that the delay setting can fix) on non-game content.

Yep they do play hdr off a usb. Are you sure you're downloading the hdr demos and not just the uhd demos? It will actually have the letters HDR on the tv when you play them.

I will try this. We leave it on dynamic at home and it tears my eyeballs up.

Yeah it's the same video I played on the youtube app with the Korean firmware, the video showed hdr in the youtube app (settings changed to backlight 20 while playing). So I downloaded the video to thumb drive in mp4 and mkv formats and both had the same results of backlight not changing.

Have you tried it and got it to work? If so how do you download the videos? I use a program called 4K video downloader.

Could it be from having an older thumb drive?

Yes i tried it, or i wouldnt of said it works. The demos are from the uhd demo site. Just type in uhd demos in google and the site will pop up. Then go to the hdr section.

I didnt download the korean update, so the hdr files I've watched have been from that site.

I agree with you. If you want to use game mode for movies it probably hurts nothing.

Does the tv automatically ask you if there is update available? Or you have to go look for it?
After it's been available in your area for a day or two, it should detect it and a message will pop up asking if you want to install it. If you have auto-update on, I think it may just do the update by itself, but I'm not sure.

If you're impatient, it's not a bad idea to check manually every once in a while. This is how I've installed all of mine, but for the last one I had stopped checking but eventually got a notification.

I think i have it set up right i am gonna test some more games out later.

Also, does the labeling of the HDMI really matter? I have my cable box in HDMI 1, PC in HDMI 2, XBOS in HDMI 3 and PS4 in HDMI 4 which is labeled ARC?

EDIT- Also, the TV randomly turns off and on while i am on the PC.

Is it possible to download a 4k HDR video file and connect the HDD to the TV over regular USB? Will it show everything correctly, including HDR? Or would it require a newer type of USB?

took my wife and I a little while to get used to movie mode, but after a week there is no going back. Standard is what we use for years on our old TV, but I have to agree that movie mode is the way to go.

Can't do warm 2 though, warm 1 all the way!

Well it's all come full circle and I am back to getting the KS8000. Teeter tottered for 2 months it feels like.

But I just noticed something that...it comes in a 60 inch model?
Because of the way we have our shelves mounted a 65 inch would be annoying because I would have to move all the shelves up. I don't know why after doing all this research I thought it only came in 55, 65 and 75 inch models.

There's no difference, right?

Also..people are staying away from the 8500 because it's curved right? No other reason.

i highly recommend doing some research about HDR so you have a better understanding of what it is and what it does. It's really not just a "more colors" thing. If you're expecting it to just make everything more colorful you might be disappointed.
