KS8000 settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

Do you guys use sharpness when playing a 1080p game? I tried some Witcher and Smash 4 but both were very soft, I don't know if that's just an effect of upscaling or if I should tinker with some setting..

I tired some mario 3d world and it was soft. Had to add some sharoness to help it,

I've been waiting two weeks for my KS8000 and it's set to finally arrive tomorrow (fingers fucking crossed). I've been keeping up on this thread as much as I can but I'm seriously daunted by the idea of parsing back through it for the relevant ideas and discoveries that I'll need to set this up properly.

I know the OP has been updated but there are still so many other useful details and tidbits planted throughout this thread.

Struggling to get some answers on this problem. I noticed a small smudge on my screen that I tried to clean with a dry cloth and it just got bigger and smuged some more. I have no idea how to clean this off the screen. Its a big blue oily mark, and I and it almost looks like I'm removing a film coating off the screen; hopefully thats not the case.

Anyone know how to fix this? Anyone here had any success?

Made a thread about a problem I had with my first set(although it's the ks7000 in Europe).

http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1319108&highlight=

Is it something like this? Did you try looking at the screen with a LED flashlight?

I bought a sony x850d 65'' 2 weeks ago and had some buyers regrets regarding the blacks, contrasts and HDR (Everything looked washed out).

I decided to rent a van bring it back and exchange it for a KS8000.

Best, Decision. Ever.

It's a night and day difference on my PS4 Pro in HDR!
Simply amazing!
It also was 1000$ off at bestbuy (CA).

Thank you GAF!

PS: Any news if Samsung is aware of the HDR backlight bug and is working on it?

Do you have any microfiber cloths, similar to these?

I had sort of a similar thing happen when I tried to use a dry swiffer cloth on my KS8000. It just created an oily type of smudge which looked awful, but then I wiped it down with a microfiber cloth and it was gone.

Two things I'm struggling with at the moment with my PC connected:

1. It won't let me select game mode. I can't even force the game content type from the Nvidia control panel any more, the only options are auto, desktop and full screen video
2. I can't get 5.1 sound out of it. I'm connecting by HDMI to the control box and then using the ARC port to my amp. This works from my PS4 and it's sending Dolby Digital, but I can't get the same from my PC.

Any help appreciated!

Worked out the first - needed to change the icon for the PC to a blu ray. Weird.

Still can't figure out the second - it seems like my PC recognises the TV as being 2-channel only and then won't output 5.1. Any way around that?

I bit on the cyber monday deal on the 65", can't wait to try it out.

Does anyone know if the built in apps feature HDR? I don't have a PS4 Pro yet so I was wondering if there was a way to check out the HDR without an external input to the TV.

At work, how does it compare to the rtings settings (I used them for mine), or our very own Haines' settings?

If they are close you know we are warm :)

It is basically just summarizing how to use HDR on the TV in game mode (Game mode = On, HDMI UHD Colour = On, Smart LED = High, Colour Space = Auto, Backlight = 20)

They don't really talk to much about other settings, but they have contrast at 90 and have dynamic contrast off.

Awesome of df to that.

Im not suprised by contrast of 90. Im going to recheck calibration now after some advice i got earlier.

Going to watch now. Curious on what color tone they use.

Edit. Warm2. Hmm...kk.

i ran optical from my pc to my receiver and output using that, as i had the same issue

unfortunately i don't have a solution. 5.1 to the tv using hdmi on the xbox one and ps4 work fine, PC does not

i read something about an EDID hack but never went any further with it

I really can't get behind this notion of an objective brightness setting: everyone's sensitivity is different, everyone has different lighting conditions in their rooms, etc.

I do agree about having things cranked up so high that details are lost, which is why I'm continuing to tinker (turned off dynamic contrast, regular contrast now down to 80). But if I'm watching something where I bounce between two values, I'm going to go with the one that looks best for me, even if it's going through a few artificial filters or what have you.

Color and tint settings are something I'm particularly curious about, so I'll try to run that free calibration program from AVS that was linked.

No really though, turn the damn brightness down. That's not a subjective setting and it isn't affected by the lighting conditions of your room. You're raising levels that are supposed to be pure black and making them grey. Raising the 'brightness' does not make your picture emit more light. It's simply raising the part of the picture that's supposed to be black up to a weird grey haze. You're losing contrast, detail, and black levels when you do this, and you aren't even getting a brighter picture out of the deal.

Honestly, and I mean no disrespect... But your settings are all over the place. Your brightness setting is way off, your contrast fluctuates way too much, your TV is strangely set on Dynamic, your Sharpness level is just insane, your color tone is cool, you don't want to use game mode, your color is way too high...

I know that some people have different preferences that maybe don't match what the official guidelines from TV manufacturers/game creators/filmmakers recommend, but this is very, VERY off. And even with that considered, if you were satisfied with your settings being way, way off, that'd be fine. But clearly you aren't satisfied as you keep changing your settings all the time.

So in my opinion, you need to get a proper calibration disc like Disney WOW and be done with it. Or follow the OP's settings, and then leave them be for a week. If you don't like the settings after a week, tinker all you want again.

Just my two cents.

For the game mode HDR bug, I think our best bet would be to flood Samsung with requests to fix it :p

Is there somewhere we can submit this information? I figure the more people do it, the better chance of it getting fixed.

Gamma at -1? Interesting... I thought the consensus was to just leave this at default.

Ive seen it said to switch between that and 0 between daytime and nighttime. Forget which way. Might be in ine of the calibrations linked.

So i just leave it at 0 and forget about it.

i cant imagine a world where samsung isnt aware of the hdr issue by now. It only just came into gaming so they might have just been caught off guard. I cant see why it would be hard for them to fix if it already works in movie mode,

Just gave EDID hacking a crack. Managed to get 5.1 to show up, but still couldn't get sound from my rear speakers. It also stopped 60Hz from working. What a pain.

Gave these settings to a friend who just purchased the TV as well. Similar to what is posted in OP, but I do vary in some of the settings. Keep in mind these might not be the best settings for you, I do believe that we will all vary in opinions and what is best for one may not be the best for another.

Also... yes that it a diaper basket and changing mat haha, we have a 8 month old who constantly shits :p

I've got sharpness around 20. That seems to give the picture a sharper image without overly sharpening other elements.

Again, do the settings carry over to both HDR and non-HDR content? On the LG OLED, it would have two separate settings for both, meaning that if you fired up a 4K+HDR game, it would have its own settings versus 1080p or lower content. I think this TV just keeps the settings for both, but I just wanted to make sure.

Brightness is around the 40s now, by the way, and dynamic contrast is off. Having a list of games/movies to try would help narrow things down as well. I should give Wind Waker a try as well as something that's predominantly black and with mood lighting. I would also give the XB1's calibration test a try as it seemed robust, but I already sold it while I wait for the S to arrive in a couple of days.

Any idea how to make the pop up [SAMSUNG - EXTRA] stop from appearing forever?

It's a small box that appears on the top right corner, I get it when I'm playing Dark Souls 2 mostly ???

Hey guys im having a issue on the audio front for my KS8000 and Onkyo TN646 receiver, the tv wont recognize that the audio is coming from my receiver/hdmi input 1, instead it thinks its coming from the TV speakers how would I go about fixing that?

Picture Size set to 16:9 overscans the image, I'd recommend changing to Fit to Screen.

Nope :(

Latest firmware is 1152 and it seems it introduced youtube HDR and some fixes to motion/judder.

As someone who owns a KS9000 how would I go about downloading the firmware? I googled it and came up short since I couldn't find my correct model on the Samsung site.

Also, I thought 50 Sharpness was equal to 0 on this set? Is 0 or 50 better?

I believe those are the Sony sets in which 50 is equal to 0.

Noticed that Digital Foundry had their TV set to Warm 2 and Sharpness to 0 in their video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rMovlvGGrg

Should we be using Warm 2? I wasn't sure what color temperature games operated at so I just left mine set to Warm 1.

Also, I thought 50 Sharpness was equal to 0 on this set? Is 0 or 50 better?

Some prefer Warm 1, but if you want the most accurate image, you should be going with Warm 2.

Set Sharpness to 0.

Does anyone know of a way to stop the TV from and my devices from switching each other on?

Basically, when I switch my TV, it also switches on either my Apple TV or Xbox One depending on what I was last using.

Also, when I put the Apple TV in sleep mode, it also switches off the TV.

Ah yes, I didn't take a picture of that screen but I do have all my sources as "Fit to Screen" for some reason even when you select that option it will still show as 16.9 in the main menu.

Ahh the good ole' warm1 vs warm 2 debate :p

Warm2 is industry standard and recommended by many for being the most accurate.

That being said, I am a warm1 man myself.

there was a link posted a few pages back, have to check the Korean Samsung website and download the file, unzip, put on USB, and install it that way.

I may be wrong but go to settings, then system, then expert settings. HDMI CEC turn that off.

Same shit happened to me bro, I saw a smudge on my screen and went and did the same thing. Only made it worse, I used microfiber cloths (clean ones) too! I ordered some screen cleaner called "screen mom" which seemed to have helped a lot but I can still see the smidge very faintly, you have to really look for it.

I've clean all srts of LCD displays before and never saw anything like this. I'm wondering of the coating was even properly applied because that shouldn't happen so easily. I'm thinking about taking mine back for a replacement as I've also been having serious wifi issues. Not sure, as my screen is absolutely perfect as far as blacklight bleed is concerned. Very frustrated.

Ive soent so much time lately trying to flip to warm2 in games but i cant do it. Warm1 always looks better and what i think it should like.

Samsung does the same thing. There's individual picture settings for SDR/HDR. When you activate an HDR signal, you'll need to calibrate those settings separately.

Their HDMI Black Level setting on low for 10 bit HDR correct ?
Yes. That is correct.

Something Digitalfoundry didn't mention is what should HDMI Black Level be set to?
Normal = Full RGB
Low = Limited RGB

Am I correct?

Some prefer Warm 1, but if you want the most accurate image, you should be going with Warm 2.

Set Sharpness to 0.

50 = 0 on PC mode only

I've had the 55KS8000 for a little over a week now and I love it. I noticed last night that the chrome border that runs along the bottom of the TV is popping out on the far bottom-left corner and a little bit in the middle right above the Samsung logo.

Should I return it and get another?

I can't do it either man, warm1 all the way.

Their HDMI Black Level setting on low for 10 bit HDR correct ?

HDMI Black Level doesn't matter when an HDR game is being played, this is why it is greyed out.

Non HDR games though, as long as it matches the PS4 setting, your golden

I tried this, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. Thanks for your help though.

I have this issue as well, sometimes it randomly switched source or turns on/off for some reason. I would also check the device itself and see if there is a similar option.

Absolutely, it might get worst, dunno how much you paid but even if you got through EPP still about 800 bucks, I would certainly look into returning it.

The set is amazing, but Samsung with pooched on the overall build quality. Though, your call.

Does this apply to all tv? Or just for 55"?

I had to use M8 50" for my specific floating mount. KS8000, 55". Might be a thing with my mount, specifically, but 45" was a bit shallow with all the recommended spacers.

EDIT: This is my floating mount, if any have the same and are wondering about screw lengths:
