Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

Ardyn was not designed by Nomura iirc (at least not the outfit) but he's wearing what you would expect from a 2000 year old excentric mad fallen savior/lucifer living on the streets and that's what he is. He has elements from all of those in his story and in his costume.

Voice actor is portaying him as such. I have no complaint about him except that the game does him a disservice.

I would have liked the beast form boss but maybe that was better as he is.

Nomura didn't design anything for this game aside from the faces of the 4 young bros. Everything else including their clothes, their older designs, and every villain, guest and NPC was designed by other people.

what happened
Stockholm syndrome, soon people will start saying that the romance element was believable and that Luna was a great character... >_> the premise behind Ardyn was sound and actually pretty clever but holy shit the execution is really terribad like so many other elements of the story, Jared™, the fact that Ledolas was seemingly asleep back at home with absolutely no one reporting about what Ardyn was doing is pretty insane. This is the least an empire has felt like an empire in the history of the series and it's not because Ardyn was stabbing everyone in the back but because there is absolutely no sense of structure or logic whatsoever.

You actually have to wonder how much Regis knew of Ardyn and whether there were more connotations to when Ardyn entered the audience hall and sarcastically introduced himself as chancellor of Niflheim.

Ardyn succeeded indeed. The reason he powered up Noctis is because of the Crystal I think. Ardyn wanted to exact revenge on it, and couldn't touch it himself. So the Crystal chose Noctis to merge with, and Ardyn wanted to slay him. I think he had 2 thoughts, win or die, both would fulfill his goal. This would explain why he would go all out but also doesn't really care that he loses.

Ardyn must've been a king. He does use Royal Arms, and those are Lucis Caelum powers. Both Noctis and Ardyn can use them, so they're both Lucis Caelums (which they are, but the game implies Noctis hails from a fake bloodline and Ardyn was the real one). Ardyn calls himself a healer though, not a King at all. The most logical explanation here is that Ardyn is betrayed by a relative. And that he was cast out of the family.

But Izunia is such a weird name anyway. It means Weasel.

One thing we all agree on was the Noct/Luna romance was nonexistent. I did love their puppy dog romance as kids but it didn't carry over to them as adults to me.

Does Luna even have a phone? "I wish I could hear his voice again" Well, maybe call him? Everyone seems to have a phone but the oracle.

Yeah but so did Leviathan and Titan, but you had to earn their trust.

Yea true but they were more like "dude I was sleeping come on."

Where as Ifrit was like "I am going to ravage all of mankind for thousands of years with a parasite that will turn men into daemons and absorb all of the light so Eos is plunged into never ending darkness and man will suffer for eternity. I hate mankind, and I hate you. Burn...burn it all."

Did I enter an alternate universe? the last two pages with people talking about how good a villain Ardyn is when for me and my brother (having finished the game last night) he is maybe one of the worst main villains in the series.

I don't know, maybe we skipped some information in the game or didn't put attention in some parts, well maybe it's not that he's a bad villain but that his story is a mess, I'd like to read why some of you think he's such a good villain.

No. You just found out your opinion is not universal and people may disagree.

Plenty of people have stated their reasons for loving Ardyn in this very thread, especially in the last few pages. Give them a check. :)

what happened

We played the game. He definitely looks ridiculous and came off very over-the-top and hammy in Kingsglaive. He works much better in the game because he gets to be pretty lowkey and you start understand why he talks with that affected voice (he is being condescending).

I definitely thought he looked like a real dumb guy before I played the game. He's the best character. And the english VA is superb.

The lack of the Emperor and his men being on screen really hurts both Ardyn and the game. It would have been great to establish the Empire starting to figure out they were played only for it to be too late.

Ardyn largely carries the plot, regardless.

They "replaced" Ardyn's bloodline...which is why Ardyn says "Now it is over majesty. What are you going to do, banish the daemons and bring peace? Erase me from history once more?"

If anyone is still curious about the combat, and strategy potential, there's a FF fan Podcast where they talk about the combat a lot. They usually play FFXIV and other FF games so they know a lot about the history of the series, and did their homework on how the combat got to where it was. https://youtu.be/_TKgg78gyFU?t=807 Combat talk starts at 13:43 ends at 1:20:00, they answered all of my concerns, it sounds interesting to me, and if I got it today at least I'll know what I'm in for (waiting on mpatches, DLC, and how new game+ will turn out).

Some highlights:

They like the feel.

The whole game is built around developing iFrames (invincibility animation abilities).

It only ever felt bad to them in one instance (the long gigantic boss battle).

Didn't like the lack of control you have over your allies.

No really engaging fights that force you to learn mechanics in the game.

Felt it was very forgiving (Got hit? Chug a potion).

AI should at least learn to avoid stuff sometimes, not all the time (you can call them away from danger with abilities).

A lot more...

Maybe new game+ will force playing skillfully. Though the AI will probably piss people off if they die to stuff they should learn to avoid, like the Snake coil poison AOE that takes a while to happen as they say in the discussion. Same situation in Dragon Age Inquisition but I can control each of them to get out of the way, hold their position out of the aoe, and position the melee if there's a safe spot for them to continue fighting.

The six seem like Greek gods, all with their own distinct personalities.

Titan: Warrior, calls out to Noctis directly to challenge him and gain his favor

Ramuh: Nice old guy who makes you solve a really simple puzzle to gain his favor

Leviathan: Total dick, still helps you if you beat her up enough

Shiva: Nicest of all, helps humans directly, appears as a human-like figure (I've even heard from some places that her giantess form attacked the empire directly because of what they were doing with daemons, and that's why they killed her before the others - I don't know how reliable that is, but it sounds cool)

Bahamut: Stern and stoic leader, gives info dumps

Ifrit: Satan

Do you guys think they will have Ifrit and Bahamut as a summon to appear in battle as a bonus for the future updates?

I really hope so, just because I was slightly dissapointed that we only have 4.

I'm sure they will patch them in to gameplay eventually. At least Bahamut.

I'd like to know what Ardyn meant when he said, referring to Gentianna "that's the face you wore the day..."

Did he mean the day they killed her or did he meet her in his past?

I think a lot of people are really liking Ardyn because he is actually a villain with a legit motivation that you can say "I don't blame this dude at all. FUCK the crystal, the gods, and everyone associated. Bitches goin' down."

Rather than "mwhahha I will conquer the universe! mwwhhahahahaa"

I'm assuming he meant: "The day you guys handed over the Crystal to us/me".

That's so obviously Gentiana and Bahamut. And quite possibly Ardyn (Or the first Izunia).

I took it to mean they had a past of some kind when he was a chosen hero. Not necessarily romantic, i mean. But similar to Noctis's relationship with her.

Naturally! Pure evil is boring. Tragic evil is compelling.

Ardyn was a good guy who's life was ruined by a dick and made to suffer for eternity. So now he's pissed off and it's kinda relatable. He went mad cuz of his longstanding grudge so I understand that too. Tragic character.

The biggest mystery about Ardyn to me is how nobody questioned why he hadn't aged in the 30 years since he joined the empire. Then again, we know nothing about the empire or the people involved like the emperor (who was obviously evulz) except Ardyn, Aranea and Ravus and those two were more recent empire joins.

And yeah, Ardyn is tragic. If anything it's the Gods who are the dicks, as usual.

Bahamut blessed Ardyn with the power of the crystal, while Shiva blessed him with the power of the oracle (at least that's what I've read). This was done so that he could rid the earth of the spreading corruption created by Ifrit.

"There's nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so".

It's funny how in the end, Ardyn is only evil because the gods and the Crystal are absolute dicks. And then they have you kill him.

Yes, you saved the world from the plague, but it seems to me that the gods and the Crystal are not exactly benign entities. At least not completely.

Yup. I can get behind a "mwhahaha everyone must die!!!!" type villain when they are insane and unhinged (like a Kefka) but Ardyn had a reason and was motivated by it and it consumed him and even though he was bad and wrong, what happened to him was fucked up and tragic.

Plus it's nice to have a FF game where it doesn't end up that the bad guy is bad because he's possessed/manipulated by a millennia old god that wants to restart everything/destroy stuff because humans are playthings.

Shhhhhhh Ifrit doesn't matter. It's not explained or mentioned in the game, it doesn't count. Shhhhhh...

i wouldn't wear a fedora so i couldn't relate. and to be honest he was probably wearing that while he was a "good guy" so fuck em

In other translations of that scene, Ardyn says something along the lines of "This is exactly how you looked the day you died".

Ardyn has a great story, personality, design and VA. The only problems I have with him are the fact that his backstory isn't explained (Which I think it should've been in a cutscene delivered by Bahamut while Noctis slept for 10 years) and the fact that he seems too calm for someone that seems furious about what happened to him rather than mildly irritated.

What is an Izunia? I thought it was a person but is it just a name/title? Lucis Caelum is for people of the royal family?

Also what happened to the crystal? Does it still exist in some form after Noctis died? Ardyn wanted the crystal to merge with Noctis so he could destroy them both right? He couldn't touch the crystal himself.

Izunia is the name or surname of the person who the Crystal chose to replace Ardyn as royalty.

And according to Ardyn, this Izunia guy was kind of an ass, as well.

The Crystal is gone. Just like Ardyn wanted.

Yo Ishida, I need your opinions on some stuff to do with this game, mind if I PM you?

Thanks for always answering my questions lol. And I see, makes more sense now (the names). Shame about the crystal. I swear I read somewhere that the crystal was like the soul of the planet though.

Kind of wish you could fight Ifrit again. Was pretty epic. I might have a save file tho.

Izunia was a family name of the individual who demonized Ardyn for taking on the curse of the starscourge, usurping his title and causing the gods to deny Ardyn ascension into the afterlife.

The crystal and the ring was destroyed when Noctis died. With Luna also dead, the human connection to the Gods were cut off basically.
