I just got back from watching it in 2D. I really enjoyed it, I think in many ways it's better than TFA - which I liked. But at a certain point I kind of thought, what's the point of this. I know what happens. It's great, it's Star Wars, it's well told, acted, shot and paced... But it doesn't really need telling. It was like watching a film I'd seen before, but hadn't (much like TFA).

Also, because it ties into A New Hope, it was weird watching a film where all the main characters die. That hardly ever happens, and it doesn't sit right. A few should've made it out - then George could do yet another special edition of the OT with their faces in the background :/. It is the Dirty Dozen does Star Wars, someone should survive.

I really liked Tarkin, thought it worked well ( and I generally dislike cgi characters ) Leia not so much. Loved Vader going nuts at the end, that part was unexpected and one of the highlights of the film. I wish we had more Vader as now I guess that really is it. It's a bonus that we've got what's there.

One area that was disappointing was the music. It really lost something without John Williams. It needed the Star Wars theme at the start, and more OT music throughout. Weird, it looked like a Star Wars, had lots of callbacks to the OT, but didn't sound like it.

EDIT: I've just retread my impressions they might sound negative but the film is really enjoyable. If all Star Wars films are this good we will be very lucky. I want to see it again for sure. So yeah, great, but a bit odd. But great!

I think if the movies are enjoyable and fun. It doesn't matter if they "need" to be told or not. If anything this is enhancing the universe and expanding it imo.

Now of course in the future. I'd love to side story with no ties to the OT or any of the characters we already know, but I feel at least for the short term with these movies they are getting their foot in the door. Telling different yet very familiar stories

Definitely on board with wider stuff; my dream remains that they do something KOTOR-esque - get a thousand years or more removed from the current lore and just go nuts.

Okay... Just came back from seeing the movie, some thoughts...

It actually took me 30-45 minutes to really get into the movie. Especially the beginning was all over the place. I didn't like how the
imperial pilot and the bombshell information he had
were introduced.
Forest Whitakers character had so little screen time, you wonder why he was even there and his
mind reading alien thingy was kinda stupid
I just didn't like the way the character was used.

A general problem of the movie in my opinion: Most of the characters remained flat. It's not like you couldn't get what every character was going through, but there wasn't much development or explanation either. Especially with Cassian.
K2SO stole the show.

The Rogue One title screen and theme sucked.

That being said.... It's a great and fun movie.. Go see it.
When you accept that it is in fact a Star Wars story, an action centered spin off, you will have fun.
The fan service and all the tie ins and prequel moments were great, the landscapes and images beautiful and the action scenes kicked ass.

Agreed with most all of this.

The title card music let me down as well.

Forest Whitacker's inclusion was poorly handled overall and I definitely did not feel strongly about any of the rogue one squad either. Droid excepted.

Not going to look back on this one very strongly, but that finale with Vader and CG Leia choked me up.

Guys this will be my last post before I watch it on Friday lol. I'm hyped by what I read and I'm sure I'll probably see this movie twice.

I loved the title card. It was to signify this is not your run-of-the-mill Star Wars movie.

It was alright. The parts that were good were really good, but the parts that were weak were really weak. Force Awakens was better imo.

EDIT: Vader was awesome. Probably the best part of the film

Creepy CG Tarkin, I mean the effect was fairly impressive technically (we've come a long way from Tron Legacy) but it's uncanny as hell, felt the same about young RDJ in Civil War.

I really didn't expect to see a KOTOR style Republic ship in this movie. It was pretty awesome

The original design could be traced back to KOTOR, but it was redesigned for Rebels, which is what Rogue One's hammerhead designs were based off of.

Just got back, I really enjoyed it, was it the best film ever? no, but it was a perfectly good Star Wars films.

Vader was wow, so good to see him fuck shit up, I only wish it was a bit longer and we saw him go through a bit more of the ship.

I actually thought we were going to see the plans transmitted to the Tantive IV rather than it actually being present during the battle and fly off at the end. I do like that they kind of end it pretty much just before ANH begins, I feel like that's what most people were expecting so to brush over the link would be silly.

I also loved the shots of the pilots from ANH used in this film, I immediately knew they were pulled from the original film but my friends hadn't noticed, I thought it was a nice touch and amusing to see Red 5 get hit. The CG faces of Tarkin and Leia were a bit weird, I feel like we're almost very nearly there but not quite, their mouths being the oddest part and Tarkins face moved a little too much.

I also didn't know how big that space battle was going to be, I was expecting some X-Wings and Y-Wings, not a bunch of cruisers to show up. The nice part was seeing the Rebels do something different than just try and match the Empire, their ramming of the Star Destroyer was a sweet move and the sort of thing you'd expect to see from a side in the war that didn't have the numbers for scale.

I was disappointed a lot of the cool shots we got in trailers were absent in the film, I would have been very interested to see how they were going to originally tell that last hour or so as it felt like that's where they changed the most from the trailers. Also what was with the Mon Calimari? Showing that a species can vary is fine but they went from costumes that all looked the same to CG but also changed the look quite substantially from what we had seen of them in other films making them stand out and look a bit weird, they needed an Ackbar like guy in there somewhere.

All in all I enjoyed it and thought it was a worthy side story to the main line of films. I think it expand the Star Wars universe and what the galaxy was like around the time of the original trilogy in the right sort of way

Anyone else catch the speaker in the rebel base say Admiral Sendulla, as in the rebels character?

Yep, and the Ghost flying around in a few of the Scarif space battle shots. I imagine they probably didn't escape with the remainder of the fleet when Vader arrived to mop up.

I've also heard Chopper can be seen on Yavin but I didn't catch him.

Hmmm should I watch rebels? Was jimmy smits 'Jedi who was a big help in the clone wars' a reference to that show?

Nah pretty sure he referenced Obi.

Rebels has it's moments, but I think you'd miss a lot if you haven't watched through Clone Wars first.

The back end of season 2 and the current season 3 have been great.

I think that would be Obi Wan or maybe
Ahsoka Tano
, and if that's the case the series you're looking for is The Clone Wars. Rebels is a sequel to that show

Bear in mind I watched the originals all on release (many times) at the cinema (I was 8 in '77) and have been a massive fan from then on and will never stop here's my take.

Having had mixed feelings about TFA (but enjoying on the whole and have watched again since), and absolutely hating the prequels, I went in with a little nervousness to watch this movie.

As a movie I found it was 'alright', but... CGI Tarkin was bad in my view, Leia was awful, the Star Destroyers looked like toys, especially when we first see them. The music I thought was pretty poor, the occasional snippit of stylised Star Wars score but even then it didn't feel like a Star Wars film and had to remind myself it was even though I was watching stormtroopers running across screen! However there were some nice nods to the original film put in there (characters) and the story was actually good though I didn't actually warm to any of the characters and didn't care if they lived or died unfortunately.

I'm glad I've watched it but doubt I'll ever watch it again which is shame.

So is this the best looking Star Wars film? I think it definitely comes close to ESB and TFA in that regard.

So many times I thought to myself "man that looked amazing".

I think the film really hit its stride once Forest Whitaker's character died. Nothing to do with him per se, but I felt that was when the disparate elements of the film fully came together - it didn't look back after that.

I just saw a picture of CG Leia. Quite impressive.

Wait til her mouth moves.

Bail Organa is referencing Obi-Wan and Leia in his last lines of dialog.

edit: and yes, this is the best photographed Star Wars film. Which is crazy, because last year was, at that point, the best photographed Star Wars film.

We're getting spoiled here.

Just watched the leaked Vader sequence. Yes, I know that it will work much better in context of the film, but it is exactly what I was wanting from Vader in this. I need more. A lot more.

I have said it for years, but I want a God of War style game where you are Vader and the entire game is just you casually mowing down Rebels.

Let's talk about Chirrut Imwe. A very interesting character...smiling even in death.
When Saw's henchmen puts a hood over his head, he exclaims, "Are you kidding me? I'm blind!". The cinema erupted in laughter for that part.

Is he a Force user? It seems as though he's blind, but he can "see" things around him. Perhaps similar to Darth Traya / Kreia?

He "sees" Jyn wearing a Kyber crystal necklace, eventhough it's under her clothes.
He can avoid laser blasts(!!) and fight 10 stormtroopers in melee combat.
He can "aim" and shoot down a TIE Fighter, causing it to crash (intended?) on enemy installation.
He walked towards the master switch with the Force guiding him through the laser blasts and succeeded in activating the switch.

He claims he was a guardian of the Temple. Perhaps some Force rubbed off him?

We are still eagerly awaiting Star Wars Musou!

He's able to do all that because he is Donnie Fucking Yen.

The IM BLIND part the whole cinema died lol

Really liked the movie, it was a very good star wars movie

If these side movies keep this quality ...

There's an episode of Invisibilia on NPR with a blind guy named Daniel Kish who "sees" like Daredevil and teaches the skill. If you're wondering if he's really totally blind, both of his eyes were surgically removed.

I wish they gave him a bit more dialogue and that he didn't overuse his mantra. I didn't know if he was supposed to be a comic relief character or not. I really liked the idea of a force user who isn't a jedi, but the execution was pretty poor. I forgot he had even been there after he died.

Sums up my feelings unfortunately.

Didn't like how out of focus everything that was not central looked . Especially in dialogues, character who was talking was always really crisp and sharp while who was listening looked like a blur every time.

Didn't care about the characters unfortunately . I expected everyone would die going in (I avoided all of the trailers but we all know how the story goes) and even then I was not emotionally attached to anyone. Maybe the badass duo but meh.

Forest Whitaker was underutilized. Severely. And his alien served basically no purpose at all. Sad. He had potential.

Not enough cameos. Really, if your central characters are nothing to write home about and if 90 percent of your audience already knows the story by heart, you have to give us some more fan service. 3po and r2 barely were seen. Leia was a 1 second shot. This had lots of potential.

The score. Remixed most was really good, but original songs were lacking.

I tried to compile a list of all returning characters. Movies tie-ins only, not the animated series.

Did I miss anyone?

Mon Mothma
Jan Dodonna
