Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

Im most bummed out about the cut scene that involves Jyn running towards the AT ATs.

Yea, kept waiting for this in the movie as well. Actually the AT's were pointless in the film, got wrecked super easily and barely felt like a threat.

Also wanted to see Krennick on the ground confidently walking through the battlefield with his white cape all dirtied up as in the trailer too. He sucked in the film.

Also, I know the line was controversial in the trailer, but Jyn's "I rebel!" moment gave her character more confidence and identity than how she actually ended up in the film. Another bummer cut for me.

My brother didnt even know Tarkin was CGI. Im interested to know if people who arent familiar with SW notice the CGI.

my friend who isn't a huge star wars fan said "i didn't know he was still alive!" lol talking about peter cushing even though he would be well over 100 years old if he were still alive.

I do wish the Stormtroopers in the water shot/scene was still in there. It looked very nice.

Really good looking film when I think about it.

Im hoping the bluray has a ton of deleted scenes, so some fans can make the ultimate rogue cut, maybe remove tarkin and leia? Do they need to be in there?speed up the pacing a bit, add a few deleted scenes and we have a great fan cut.

I thought the cg of Tarkin and Red Leader was excellent.
I loved seeing some space combat, although the idea of a cruiser pushing 2 star destroyers around is ridiculous.
The old xwings look a million times better than the new ones.
Mendelson was amazing as always.

However, overall the film felt like big budget fan fiction.
It also retcons some things about episode 4 that I'm not thrilled with.

Suddenly the alliance has a fleet, which is gone by the next film.
No one on the frigate thought to broadcast the plans to their entire fleet?
Deliberately putting the flaw in the Death Star makes the empire less menacing.
The alliance has been making hit and run attacks against the empire, but now it's only choice is straight up fighting or complete surrender?

I was kind of the opposite. I totally felt the deaths. It made me ponder war and the sacrifices everyone made to get this mission done. When the rebel fleet came in as backup I was like YEEEAAAAHH..... in fact I found the emotion I was feeling to be quite prominent and perhaps stronger than many equivalent moments in other Star Wars movies.

Could be that I'm older now and having seen the others dozens of times it might be harder to put myself in that place for those films.

This movie man.... it's like the prequel you always wanted. When the prequels were coming out, the sheer joy and wonder of what lines like "when I met your father he was already a great pilot" meant was real. Finding out the back story turned out to be something quite different in feel.

Rogue One does it how you expect and more importantly, want.

And damn, Vader was terrifying in the last scenes. It capped off the whole suicide mission feel of the whole story. The movie did a fantastic job at making you feel that everyone who died made a sacrifice and were real heroes.

I suspect your opinion and mine will be the same, you seem to be in my emotional range.

I'm not one for fan cuts but I do hope there are loads of deleted scenes, especially seeing as this is a spin-off with no sequel secrets to hide.

No one in line for IMAX already which was a different story for TFA. Bought a ticket for Miss Sloane and will keep an eye on the line throughout.

The castle scene in Mustafar? I thought that was awesome actually. That was some George Lucas like world building.

Yeah. I liked the idea behind it but I just thought the execution was a bit off, it was great finally seeing that castle on the big screen, something you've heard talked about for years from the original McQuarrie concept art.

As soon as it cut to that I was thinking "Wait, mustafar?", then as soon as the structure appeared "They didn't...". I just thought something about Vader himself and the dialogue in that scene seemed a bit odd, I'm seeing it again tonight though so I'll try and get a better impression of it then.

The orginal art by Ralph Mcquarrie that inspired the Mustafar scene:

I don't think it's that piece, specifically. There were sketches from Star Wars, too (real rough ones), a couple of which got repurposed for that painting for Jedi.

edit: Caode coming through AS I'm posting. Thanks.

ALSO: Red & Gold Leader aren't CGI. It's just re-used/unused footage from Star Wars. In one case I'm pretty sure there's a repeated shot.

ALSO ALSO: The shot that keeps sticking with me, two days after my first view, is the Devastator bursting in from lightspeed as the rebels are trying to escape, and ships just breaking on its bow.

Just out of it. Overall pretty good. Last third really has some moments that made me well up a little. When the Alliance showed up to help out and of course the sacrifices... Wow.

CGI Tarkin was something I really hoped they would do to try and help gel these films together so they feel like the same universe. I think they actually overdid the amount of Tarkin scenes though, and the first we see him would have been cool and easier to believe if we'd only seen his reflection in the glass as he talked. Also sadly whoever voices him just doesn't quite have his lizard like delivery of the lines necessary. Still, it works more than it doesn't. Leia looked just like her as she turned around but then face on she felt a little uncanny valley. Oh and the ridiculous quickness of the credits right after that felt more rushed than it needed to be.

Still, wow, what a great film overall.
Everybody did die
lol. Lump in the throat stuff. A hopeful future for Star Wars if this is how it starts the spin offs.

Really does seem, the more I think about it - the Tarkin shit would have been way better handled if he was off-site (on Coruscant or something) and communicating w/ Krennic via holo, right up until he decided Krennic's incompetence was too much, and he & Vader come thru at the climax to commandeer the Death Star.

Lessens Tarkin a little, gives you more room to play w/ the uncanny valley aspects...Just seems like it would have been the better move, in hindsight.

I hope the comics run with Vader's castle. I've always wanted to see it utilized more, especially since I read Brackett's ESB draft.

137 EXT DARTH VADER’S CASTLE

A grim castle of black iron that squats on a rock in the midst of a crimson sea.

138 INT DARTH VADER’S CASTLE

In a tower room, grim and darkling, lighted by the red glow outside. Vader is at home, at ease. He has companions; several small gargoyles that perch or caper on the massive furniture. He is feeding them tid-bits from a golden bowl, enjoying their ugliness and their greed. Abruptly he stiffens. He sweeps the gargoyles aside and stands up, his fists on the table. The gargoyles skitter away, fightened (sic).

139 INT MINCH’S HOUSE – DAY

Minch and Luke. Luke’s face glistens with sweat. Minch is staring at him in amazement.

LUKE

I think… I think…

140 INT DARTH VADER’S CASTLE

Darth Vader, feeling the disturbance in the Force, knowing it can only derive from one source, hurls his own dark power against Luke.

141 INT MINCH’S HOUSE – DAY

Luke, in semi-trance, shows signs of distress.

LUKE

Dark. Dark.

Minch is instantly alert.

MINCH

Come back, Luke.

But Luke straightens and something unfamiliar comes into his face. When he speaks his voice is harsh and deep, and he is not speaking to Minch but to someone far away.

LUKE

No! Fight. Dark…with dark!

Minch, frightened, bends all his efforts to bring Luke

142 INT DARTH VADER’S CASTLE

The gargoyles cower. Darth Vader recoils as if from a blow. And then he laughs, AS IF HE HAS DISCOVERED something that bodes no good for Luke.

143 INT MINCH’S HOUSE – DAY

Minch, frightened, bends every effort to call Luke back.

MINCH

Luke!

Luke’s eyes open and he looks dazedly around at Minch.

LUKE

Darth Vader knows Touched me struck at me. And I felt…power. I struck back.

MINCH

The dark side of the Force. You must never use it, Luke.

143 (cont.)

LUKE

Why not?

MINCH

It’ll destroy you, as it destroyed Darth Vader. Luke, you’re in greater danger than I realized. Even untrained, you’re far more powerful than I, more far more powerful than Obi-Wan. I was trying to show you the way, and you outran me. You don’t just touch the Force, you rend it. You tear it. No wonder Darth Vader knew.

LUKE

(taking this in)

But why should that be dangerous? I mean, to be strong?

MINCH

The more strength, the greater the temptation. Skywalker, if your ship could fly, I’d order you off my world right now. You’re too great a burden.

144 INT DARTH VADER’S CASTLE

Darth Vader has sat down, lost in thought, and the small gargoyles are taking courage, coming back to him. Abruptly a communications device shrills a summons. He rises and goes to it, flips a switch. The screen comes to life. The man revealed is draped and hooded in cloth-of-gold, so that we cannot see his face, but the figure is instinct (sic) with power and Darth Vadar (sic) bows before it.

DARTH VADER

Your Imperial Majesty Highness.

The voice that speaks is silken and deadly as a strangler’s cord.

EMPEROR

You are aware of the disturbance in the Force?

DARTH VADER

I am.

EMPEROR

Then you know that Skywalker is not dead. And he is more dangerous than [unreadable] I had realized. Remove him this time, Lord Vader… Or I shall remove you.

Darth Vader bows. The screen goes blank. Vader turns away. From his posture and the rhythm of his breathing, he is in a rage because he is afraid of the Emperor.

CONTINUED

144 (cont.)

angry because of his fear of the emperor. He knocks the golden bowl off the table with a mighty clang, and once more the gargoyles cower.

Agreed. I really liked the rivalry going on between Tarkin and Krennic. Krennic getting blown up by his own weapon on Tarkins commands was beautiful.

Jyn was a much better lead than Rey.
You can't really compare them imo. Two different sets of character arcs..

Jyn had her backstory and character properly introduced and presented into the story early on. Rey is part of a trilogy and barely scratched the surface of the character. The character of Rey will be more fleshed out over a long time. Leading up to most likely as a more rewarding character in the end.

I think it would be unfair to compare the two. Thought I can see where you are coming from.

The Death Star looked amazing. The eclipse, the shot from the ground at how the weapon disc is aiming straight down. They were some of the coolest scenes for me. I also loved that the Death Star theme played whenever it was shown, I couldn't help but smile :)

"Be careful not to choke on your aspirations".

Honestly, Darth Vader dropping dark and borderline cheesy quips feels to be in line with his portrayals in both original and prequel trilogies.

Vader: "I hate quips. They are rough and course and they get GAF to bemoan my character identity!"

You've got to laugh at the people that said no one would die. It always seemed likely they would. Cassian and Jyn hugging on the beach reminded me of that scene from Deep Impact. The character scenes worked a lot better than I expected after Godzilla.

If Jyn was like Rey she would have found the pilot herself, stole the plans alone and blew up the death star.

Actually getting her backstory had little to do with it.

So what happened to Jyn's father?

He died when the rebels attacked the planet he was on. Killed by rebels in fact.

Did you somehow miss the whole dying in Jyn's arms thing?

You seem a bit annoyed at Rey's character....

And no, Rey would not do that by herself. That is not her character at all.

My problem with Rey is she feels rather disconnected with the plot. Even in IV Luke was already connected to the whole thing, for Rey she felt more like a straggler. Jyn obviously was central to the plot.

I hope they deemphasize "A Star Wars Story" in the posters and advertisements for future spinoffs. I really, really hate that subtitle.
