Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

This is the Star Wars movie I'd least like to watch again. It was a much well shot movie, and had some good performances, but I never cared that much about any of the characters. I went in having seen the other movies and knew the pitch was a group would steal the plans to the Death Star, but there wasn't a moment I found surprising throughout.

If you're reading this without having seen it, I can say I liked this as much as I thought I would from the trailers, but less than I hoped after hearing the praise from others.

The entire sequence from Vader's light saber attack to the Leia reveal are the best, most adrenaline filled 10 minutes in Star Wars history.

I seriously walked in with lowered expectations and this film blew my mind.

Has anyone noticed the number of similarities the movie had to Mass Effect 2?

Jyn (Shepard) gets rescued by rebels who have an ulterior motive (cerberus/illusive man)

Rebel leaders (Citadel Council) do not wish to fight the Empire (Reapers)

Galaxy is under threat by the Empire (Reapers) and it falls down to a ragtag crew of humans, aliens and a robot aboard a spaceship(Shepard, Legion, Normandy etc) to go on a suicide mission (like in ME2) to steal information that can be used against the Empire (just like in ME2)

They also cannot enter the planet without going through a shield barrier (ME2 you can't enter the Collector base without an IFF transponder to get through a relay)

There are other similarities too but those are the ones I can think of right now

I did enjoy the movie though lol

Edit: Also kudos to them for digging all the way into KOTOR for the ship that saves the day!

latest

Those ships were also featured in Rebels in the episode were Leia makes a guest appearance.
3 of them were stolen by the rebellion on that episode so the ship in RO may be one them.

They also stole the Y-Wings at the beginning of season 3, which were explicitly noted as going to the Yavin IV team.

The CGI characters were completely unexpected and well executed. I mean, uncanny valley was still there but they were GOOD.

I really enjoyed it, despite it dragging on considerably.

That last 2 minutes of Vader was a fucking horror film and I loved it.

It was right out of Battlefront >_< ...

Call me a purist but I prefer the subtleness of Vader in the OT. He never lit up on people. He choked officers, intimidated people, choked a friggin' dude by hand. This was Attack of the Clones level of Yoda for me.

Don't get me wrong ... great ... but this is the same Vader that let a bunch of Stormtroopers go first before boarding the ship at the beginning of A New Hope?

Vader here needed to get through the ship ASAP to get the plans back. Vader in ANH had already captured the ship and could take his time.

Yo that Vader choke one-liner tho.

And that not looking up at waving Imperial flags line tho.

fuckin whew.

Yep, this. he was in a hurry for a good fuckin reason. He didn't have control of the situation but desperately needed it. Even then, he wasn't fast enough.

Yeah, I got pretty miffed when he made a choke pun to Krennic. That was very un-Vaderlike and just a poor attempt to make kids laugh or whatever.

Crowd was rowdy during previews but totally silent when the signature Star Wars crawl showed up...

Smooth transition into the SW timeline 4/5 needed Jedi.

Best regards,

OM

Just came back, those last 10 minutes!!!!!!!!!! Wow that's what I have always wanted to see from Vader. The war scenes were great, loved much of the core group but they all could have used some more time to really shine. Had no problems with the CGI, I thought having fake Cushing was amazing.

The first hour was a bit messy, it all gets redeemed by the end though. I love how it shows how the rebellion wasn't all peachy clean and that war generally sucks. It adds so much weight to the start of our favorite trilogy, in that regard it succeeds.

Not sure where I would rank it. It didn't exactly have Star Wars feel of adventure, nor should it have as it's a side story. I just like the characters and stories of the main films more.

but we know how that ended up.

The major redeeming quality the story had (to me) was that the Death Star had an intentional design defect.

Company paid for a few of us to watch the preview, I was so damn tired that I kept dozing off. Definitely awake for a lot of the action sequences and the last 10 minutes. I enjoyed it, but I need to watch it again wide awake for a better review.

The CG effect to recreate Peter Cushing was great. I think I just saw the future of cinema.

Also, congrats to Jyn Erso for having the least stupid female haircut of anyone in the series.

Ranking:
Empire Strikes Back
The Force Awakens
A New Hope
Rogue One
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
The Phantom Menace - Attack of the Clones

This is the reason why the Expanded Universe (old or new) is the best part of the franchise.

Best film in the series, hands down.

11/10, would cry again.

Holy shit that was awesome! Great ending!

... until the theatre's shitty camera decided to de-sync the audio and video as Jyn/Cassian were climbing up the spire away from Krennic till the end of the movie.

Wow. What the fuck? If this is what Disney is OK with doing I'm all on board. Direction and writing could be better, but the overall product definitely delivered.

I agree with Bobby that he should've been a hologram for most of the movie. It was a very well done effect but it just wasn't quite ready yet. In a decade we'll all be looking back and cringing at it.

First 30 minutes is a little scattershot, but once you get to Jedha it settles in and is easily the best Star Wars has to offer.

RO > ESB > ANH > TFA > ROTJ

I think the most surprising thing about this movie was that Disney let it happen this way. Thing was dark and violent thru and thru. Literally everyone dies, and not in a good way. There was actually nothing feel good or plucky about any of it.

Really liked it. I think the beginning had to be the beginning, but, everything in the last 2/3rds was pretty good. Ending was amazing.

Also turns out I really wanted a Hammerhead to push a dead SD into another SD and have that crash into a planet force field gate. That was AMAZING.

Both Tarkin and Leia looked really good. Can only imagine what they do with this in the coming years.

Yeah I hope before the bluray they maybe go back and work on it a bit more. Leia momentarily looked absolutely real but then when you see her face on she looks a bit.. chubbier than we see in a New hope and I don't think when she spoke it looked overly convincing. In Tarkins scenes I was too preoccupied just studying the effect that I kind of wasn't tuned in to the actual dialogue. Oops.

EDIT: And if they can make it look utterly real in a few years I have no objection to the, doing that and reissuing the movie.

The Vader's castle scene was my one of my favorites. I instantly remembered the McQuarrie concept art of it (or maybe I'm thinking of the original lava throne room?) and started freaking out. Never thought we'd get that in a movie.

But it had to be violent through and through. ANH made it clear just how great the cost was that came with the acquisition of those plans. It was as sad and rough as I imagined it might be.

And in retrospect, the plot was satisfyingly simple to follow. Everyone's motivation and things that happened were as clear as you could ask (imo).

Not sure RO is my #1, but a few more viewings will establish that.

I liked the hell out of this movie! I won't say love just yet, since there are a few problems here and there, but I'll definitely be seeing it in the theatre a couple of times again. I was a kid again for the third act, and that Vader scene is insanity. Loved all the creatures, that was something I felt was there in Force Awakens but wasn't in there enough.

Also, Gareth Edwards has a thing for killing fathers at the end of first acts, haha.

I can't believe I love this movie as much as I do. It's a little scattershot in the beginning and the OT nods vary between awesome and way too on the nose, but this thing shoots into the stratosphere of greatness with that third act.

Just got back from Rogue One. That was...kinda great actually. I had relatively low expectations, and I'd say it wildly exceeded them.

I would say the first half of the movie was a little bit messy and disjointed, and a few characters who seemed like they would/should be more involved in the plot were over and done with pretty quickly considering the build up. Definitely felt like it could have been helpful to have seen a little bit of Jyn's time as one of Saw Gerrera's soldiers.

Sticking with negatives for a second, CG Tarkin was pretty distracting. I get why they did it, but it was very noticable.

That's about it for serious critiques, though. Otherwise the film was tons of fun, the characters were really enjoyable (K-2SO was great, kind of a friendlier HK-47), and the only final act was really awesome. If it didn't really feel very Star Wars-y early on, it sure as shit did by the end. The action sequences were definitely pretty spectacular and had a real urgency to them.

I'd love to watch Rogue One and A New Hope back to back. It seems like it would lend a lot of gravity to the opening scene in A New Hope especially, and it would be interesting to see how it changes the perception of some characters like Vader and Tarkin.

Yes, best scene in the movie. I just wish his gargoyles from the Brackett ESB script were there.

yeah I wasn't feeling the CG at all

was really obvious that they were fake

unfortunately, since this takes place the day of episode IV, I understand why they went this route. hiring actors that kinda look like the major characters wouldn't have worked.

I'm disappointed at no Boba Fett, but it's pretty much a given that he'll be in the Han Solo movie, right?

Also a friend of mine is freaking out how the planet shield is a carbon copy of the air lock from Space Balls and won't shut up about it. I haven't seen Space Balls so, is he right?

Funny you say that. booting up one of the proper fan edits right now.

I think this fits my opinion exactly. Well said.

For those who didn't realize Tarkin was CGI, did you think they hired a really spot on body double or used prosthetics or something?
