Do they put Donnie Yens martial arts to good use?

Only in one scene when we first meet him but it's a badass 360 shot that doesn't cut away for a good 10 seconds. That's the best you can hope for in a movie like this. He's really fucking great in the movie though , probably my favorite character after K2.

It would have been great if we got to see Krennic watching the Death Star firing up from the top of that tower. Really drive home how he's destroyed by what he worked so hard for, and we get to see the laser coming down as opposed to just watching the dish light up like every other time.

I really loved this movie I think I can narrow down my complaints to 4 bullet points.

1) The first 30 minutes are just a total mess, the movie really doesn't start properly until the market place scene on Jedah.
2) While cute / funny at first the constant quipping started to get a little grating.
3) Series of minor nitpicking about why we needed so many storm trooper / new ship variants that we will likely never see again
4) CGI Tarkin and Leia looked so goofy because instead of trying to get a look alike and then CG / movie magic them into perfection they looked wayyy too CG and it blatantly stood out.

That's it really, my right out of the theater impression of this was waaayyy more positive than episode 7, it took a bit of stewing for me to really feel like I liked episode 7, but after rogue one ended i just wanted to see it again.

I think just having him look up in fear as you hear it fire got that point across. What about that badass shot of the Death Star in front of the sun though, holy shit!

Didnt a few large ships jump to hyperspace right before Vader's destroyer came in? I think it would be hard to say how many exactly survived.

that was one of the coolest shots of the movie for me. They're all trying to get the fuck out, and Vader just drops in out of nowhere and ships are helpless in crashing into him.

There is only one good scene of him being the Donnie Yen we love to see fighting but it was awesome. His character was great though. He does have other battle scenes but it's mostly with a long range weapon.

Just got back from my second screening (Went to the very first showing at 5 past midnight on Thursday and the 1045 showing this morning!)

Best final third of any SW film to date for me! loved it so much!

I really thought Krennik was the best character honestly. Even though everyone else did a great job IMO. More I think about the film the more I like it.

Pacing was super shit at the beginning. Once things picked up though...great film. CGI was on-point. And that Vader scene at the end...chills.

So at the core it's a father daughter relationship and redemption story and, as a dad to 2 young girls, that hit me more than I was expecting. I saw my kids this morning and was calling each of them Stardust. That aspect seems like something that's going to make this movie grow with me more so than TFA.

Yes, that scene was brilliant. They did a good job showing how strong is the Empire fleet (considering the Stormtroopers are still useless lol).

I do feel like some ships escaped but can't remember for sure.

So... The reaction here is positive?

The 4 of us that went last night were supremely disappointed. I fell asleep.

I went with my sister, both SW fans. She loved it more than 7 (and she liked 7 a lot). I'm not sure yet if I like it more than 7 but it's there.

The first 15-20 minutes were kinda messy with a lot of cuts but after that the movie is awesome.

I agree on that comment. The final third definitely helps elevate it to the second best Star Wars film made so far. I love the original trilogy but the Empire Strikes Back is the one I watch the most.

As much hate as TFA and Kylo get, I really really really hope that Kylo becomes [even close to] as menacing as Vader in 8 and 9. Vader is just so fucking imposing and I love it.

Question about the Death Star. It was used twice in this movie - once to destroy the temple on Jedha and once on Scarif. Did they destroy Scarif or just blow up the com tower?

Kylo Ren is the best damn character in this series in a long time and one thing I thank JJ and co. is that they didnt made a Maul 2.0 and killed him in his first appearance, I hope he kills them all including Luke and everybody and finish what vader started.

I'm saying show the fear in his face, cut to a shot behind him lying on the platform with the Death Star visible in atmosphere, lighting up and firing down to the planet.

Yeah, a couple made the jump before Vader appeared.

You should read the book

The Hope theme is just... too bright. Doesn't fit the tone of the movie at all. Not sure where he was going with that one. Playing it full force when the 2 destroyers collided was so bizarre and offputting.
Yeah that feels like the mandated disney investors tony gilroy rewrite.

The original must have been incredibly dark

This film was fantastic. Saw it last night.

Entertaining from beginning to end.

The robot K was hilarious. Gareth Edwards was fantastic.

I hope we get more of these one off stories if they are of this quality.

Black Saber eh?

Also, is it ever explained that kyber crystals power lightsabers in the films, I know it was done in one of the Clone War series.

I'd like someone to name a couple films that feature 8 or so characters in a group, where every character gets the amount of screen time and fleshing out that everyone seems to be looking for. I mean extensive back story, chronicling the past decade prior to the film's events, lots of character traits, full character arcs, etc.

K-2SO was my favorite character. He had great deadpan delivery and Tyudk was fantastic.

"I'm going with you Jyn..."

Dramatic pause.

"Cassian said I had to."

Saw this last night, I can't get over how amazing it was. My expectations were FAR surpassed. Tarkin's CGI was a little rough in spots for me, and we don't get enough screen time to the secondary characters..but those are literally my only complaints. I had a smile on my face practically nonstop for the whole second half of the movie. SOO GOOD

It's one thing to not like the movie, but to say it is worst than the prequels or to say that the characters were just "bad" or that you were so bored you wanted to walk out of the me makes me feel like I'm the crazy one here. This was, at worst, an average film no more offensive than a Marvel movie. At best, it's Empire Strikes Back level.

I would love to debate how much character development is actually in this film considering what I thought was there was absolutely fine if not the perfect amount for a film like this. In addition, I thought this was EONS better paced than The Force Awakens and especially the prequels, so the pace issues are lost on me as well.

And complaining about "dad joke" Vader? That IS Vader. Dude is snarky af.

Examples:
[after choking Captain Needa to death]
Darth Vader: Apology accepted, Captain Needa.
Darth Vader: We would be honored if you would join us.

I feel like we could have avoided the scene with Cassian at the trading outpost in the beginning just to avoid all the world jumping.

Well you know at least
red leader and gold leader made it out. But some bigger ships did make the jump.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty effective. I really didn't see Cassian killing the informant until the last minute. I didn't even know they'd be exploring that side of the rebels so it felt pretty necessary to me.

That's his only scene that doesn't involve Jyn, and it sets up the dirtier side of the rebels. I think it was a pretty necessary intro.

Loved the movie, enjoyed it so much. The ending was totally awesome especially when vader destroys the rebel troops. I'd watch the movie again just the see that scene.

I kinda wish they given donny a saber staff, something like this

Maybe his saber got damaged/khyber crystal got destroyed during the empire's desecration of jedha city and he made a makeshit staff outta the hilt. Now, jyn comes along gives him her crystal when they reach Scarif and he assembles his saber again for his last stand against the death troopers.

So those were just shots pulled out of ANH, right? There was a moment where Red Leader says something to Red 5, and I thought he looked and sounded exactly the same actor from ANH, but there's no way that guy still looks and sounds that way, haha.

how many people were at the theater last night for you guys?

in Austin, TX it was shockingly dead. I go to thursday night premiers on a regular basis for movies i am interested in. Batman vs Superman, and TFA were the last 2 i can remember. It was packed at the theater for both.

Last night there were 5-10 people waiting in line for later showings. No line for popcorn. The actual theater (3D, 8:30 pm start time) was a quarter to half full.

Yah, they were identical. Even the camera movements on the roll call gave it away. I had a lump in my heart though as nostalgia set in.

Ok, I saw this last night and my initial impressions are so so good. I know I need to digest a bit and that further reflection will probably take some of the sheen off but overall this was an amazing experience. The extent to which this felt like Star Wars in the classic sense really can not be overstated.

I loved how present everything felt in the world, and things like having an Imperial Star Destroyer hanging over a city were things that I have been waiting to see in a Star Wars movie for a long time. Force Awakens got some things right on the character scope, but ultimately made the Star Wars galaxy seem even smaller than it already did, and totally flubbed things like Starkiller Base and any chance at interesting space combat. Rogue One made the galaxy feel huge and intricate and gave a sense of the scale of the Empire and the war against it.

Pros:

+As above, look and feel were awesome
+Space Combat felt visceral and employed some interesting tactics:
The use of the ramming frigate to punch the disable Star Destroyer into the shield was a particular standout
+Director Krenic was a great villain. He exuded this wonderful sense of thwarted ambition and it was great watching him try to scrabble for influence as more powerful players constantly take advantage of him.
Tarkin's easy betrayal and usurpation of Krenic's accomplishment was both the perfect end to Krenic's arc and a great illustration of how ruthless political game in the Empire is.
+K2 was fantastic, and I have to wonder if Alan Tudyck will be reprising the voice for that model of droid in other films to come.
+Vader. Holy Shit Vader is amazing in this. Used juuuuust the right amount and used perfectly.
+
Everyone Dies. Kudos to the creators for having the guts to carry it through.

Neutral:
+The main cast were good, not great. They got the job done but I didn't feel like I got enough time to really invest in the characters. In fairness, the plot needed to move very quickly. Note that this is not a knock on the acting, which I thought was good to great through the cast, but just a comment that the script never got a chance to breathe.
+Cameos. Some were fun, like the Red and Gold squadron leaders, Tarkin was done well despite some Uncanny Valley moments, and some were a bit weird.
Leia in particular seemed strange to me, but more on that in a minute.

Bad:
-Pacing. As mentioned above, the movie moves at lightspeed to hit its plot points and that makes certain scenes feel clipped or rushed. This was particularly noticeable to me in the very beginning when we zip between planets with very little in the way of establishing, just to briefly introduce a character and then zip away. I feel like that could have been handled better because those scenes were jumbled and lacked any sense of place, which the move later excelled at.

Trying to get too cute in setting up for Ep. IV. Look, we all knew this had to end with the plans getting to the Tantive V, but the idea that Leia and that ship were at the Battle of Scarif makes the beginning of A New Hope ridiculous. How the fuck is Leia trying to play off that they are just a regular ship on a diplomatic mission when Vader saw this exact ship tear ass away about 20 minutes before? Like, he had his hand on the door, lady, don't even bother.

Overall: I think this may be the best Star Wars film since Empire. My very first reaction leaving the theater was that this could be even better than Empire, but I'm going to digest a bit before I make up my mind on that. I am seeing it again on Sunday and already can't wait.
