One thing I wished the movie did better was humanize the stormtroopers more. I think it would have been beautiful if there was a scene of stormtroopers looking at the Death Star before it destroys the base, accepting their fate, same as the two leads.

Because its not nearly as bad as you all make it and most people dont even care the slightest.
It wasn't as bad on a second viewing, but I think it was due to having just accepted that it was CG. It was worse on the first time because of the sudden shock of it.

I had a moment of, "oh shit CGI Tarkin" and then I never thought about it again. It wasn't any worse than when I see other things that are clearly CGI.

Yeah. The first time Tarkin showed up it was really hard on the limit but all the other times he appeared it was really good.

There were a few shots where Tarkin looked convincing to me, but they were all when he wasn't speaking and when no human actor was in the frame with him.

I thought it was amazing and very old school Star Wars.

Though the Buddhist monk kung fu master was a bit... catering to a certain crowd.

And CGI Tarkin and Leia were obvious.

As I mentioned before I was half asleep and dozing off during the movie, but I didn't notice dude was CGI. I also had no idea who the actor was or that he had died. Leia on the other hand was noticeable. The worst CGI effect though was AT-AT walking on the water during that battle. I need to rewatch it, but on first watch, I thought the CGI was poor.

The thing that's bugged me all night is that of all the fan service in the movie, the two guys from the ANH cantina is the most eggregious. I mean it makes sense to have Tarkin, it makes sense to have Red/Gold leader, and even if I felt it was a bit too perfect circle to include Leia, her inclusion makes sense. But those guys from the bar was just... naw son. That's the kinda shit that makes the galaxy feel small.

Just to be clear, I still really liked this movie.

At first when I saw the reflection, I thought "Oh, now that is a nice way to CGI a Tarkin scene, by reflection for this one scene" figuring that'd be it. But, I'm really glad they kept him in more scenes, I was able to look pas the CGI effect, because it was great having him back in scenes.

Eh. Doubtful. I basically came back because I'd seen the flick for the paper and of the alternatives available for freely speaking about spoilers, this was the best one. Now that everyone's seeing the thing, I might retreat back to my little hobbit hole.

Not really that big a deal anyway - this place churns forward as it always has whether I'm here ramming my head into the spokes or not.

How about you just...

stay anyways?

I loved the ending but hated the CGI Leia. Awful. My wife refuses to watch the OT so she wasn't familiar with the scene and disliked the ending. From the responses from other folks, at least of the people we know -- there is about a 50/50 divide on liking the scene.

In general though, I was not at all a fan of the Tarkin decision. I get why they did it given the proximity to A New Hope, but he looked so out of place. The likeness was spot on but the CG depiction was very jarring. Leia though looked terrible in general.

I found Tarkin's lighting to be poorly matched with the actors he was playing against. Not those in the background of his shots, but those he was talking with, ie like shot/reverse shot. Ben Mendelsohn would look one way and Tarkin would look another. Not just light from a different angle, but substantially and qualitatively different light. I feel if they had got this bit better then he would have stood out a great deal less.

I'm still in the Charles Dance camp however. And Leia would have been fine on the half turn.

Truly a facepalm worthy moment in the film.

I think that the sense of scale in the movie was perfect.

Despite Starkiller Base being some ultra mega sun-eating super weapon I thought that the Death Star was far more intimidating in this movie.

Even at its lowest power setting you felt that it was an incredible weapon.

I really dug the locations and set pieces - the CG was almost flawless IMO.

Beautiful movie.

What

It's noticeable, and distracting. It's not BAD. It's just hard to understand how they couldn't get the mouths right on these digital recreations.

This isn't a hyperbolic stance I'm taking. They swung big and didn't park it in the stands. Doesn't mean it's not IMPRESSIVE. it is. It also doesn't work the way they wanted. If it did, the conversation wouldn't even be happening, at least not on this level.

Partially is because we know it's CG. To me the chimps in Planet of the Apes are flawless. I wonder if chimps watch and see it and go "yeah that's not real".

This is my favorite star wars movie. I am surprised there were problems with this and now I really want to see what the director wanted to do before the studio interfered.

Time to file for a divorce.

Really bad week for Ponda Baba. Nearly gets blown up by the Death Star then afterwards gets absolutely smashed at his local cantina trying to forget the horror he could have been victim to and picks a fight with the wrong people getting his arm chopped off.

He should become the "MY CABBAGES" guy for Star Wars.

You best watch yourself. I have the death sentence on 13 12 systems. Wonder if they had a death sentence on Alderaan as well.

Vader wrecking house was so cool. Loved all the different space ships. CGI Tarkin was a little weird but I got over it pretty fast. There was some star wars cheese in there, wouldn't have it any other way. I'll probably see it in theaters again.
why didn't Vader use the force to grab the plans and then leave
Yep it was one of the moments I had to just let it go lol.

I mean they were a step above Aaron Johnson and Olsen, yeah. Not a tall order! Still the worst set of characters in a SW movie for me. I'm also bummed that I didn't like it, but I couldn't get over the bad storytelling, empty characters, jarring editing, inability to care about the drama or what's happening due to the bland characters, and the take me out of the movie entirely CG Tarkin and Leia.

I think Rian Johnson's gonna nail it in a year, though.
I can understand this sentiment. I liked the characters but the movie doesn't feel driven by them like in TFA.

The biggest question I asked before seeing the film was "Do the characters drive the movie?"

And I think the answer is more leaning toward no. They're more used as vehicles to move the plot forward.

It's still a really fun film I think, but after getting characters like Rey, Finn and Ren, the characterization feels weak. That's not to say I didn't like the cast, just that I feel like they were underutilized and scarcely developed.

The biggest takeaways I think are the world building and action set pieces, which were well done.

However we should have had more of a reason to care about the characters' struggles in relation to the story.

For what it's worth, I've had at least two people try to argue that Tarkin was a lookalike or make-up effects. I think general audiences who don't know Cushing and don't really remember Tarkin's role in ANH won't even see him as anything other than another actor.

My brother didnt even notice that Tarkin was CGI. He doesn't remember the OT very well for what its worth.

Enjoyed it a fair bit; the Tarkin CGI was pretty good, Leia on the other hand...

The cantina guys standing out was pretty bad too lol.

Lovely looking film, liked the characters too. Forest was a bit of a throwaway though, kinda expected more.

Anakin being friends with Kid Greedo is far more egregious.

Wait was that actually Greedo?

Anyway...

Film was good. Not the best, but I liked it better than Force Awakens.

The last Darth Vader scene was goosebumps inducing.

K2SO is the best.

But maaaaaaaaan those CGI faces. Especially Leia.

My sister's mind was blown when I told her he was CGI.

It had a feeling that Rogue One would be a suicide mission as soon as the synopsis for the film was announced, especially since it leads right into ANH and killing everyone ties up all the loose ends nice and cleanly, but man, as soon as K2SO sacrifices himself, I got a little misty eyed and knew what was coming for the rest of the crew. Even little moments like Jyn giving K2 the blaster were nice character moments.

The 3rd act was stellar. So great. I felt the desperation of the rebellion in this film more than any other Star Wars film.

It's a good film, but I think it is the type that getsvmore appreciation with time. Except the soundtrack, that fell pretty flat for me.

Didn't even know Tarkin was CG until this thread. I thought he was just recast like Mon Mothma.
