I thought he hated the prequels with a passion?

Doesn't mean you can't use pieces of them for the good.

e.g. The Clone Wars.

You don't have to be a fan of a series to do good work in it. Being a fan is severely overrated on that note.

It's not like Irvin Kershner was some sort of Star Wars fanboy when he got the job for Empire.

I'll post my thoughts before reading the thread.

+Movie was enjoyable. I liked it. I loved entering that world with that aesthetic and atmosphere again.
+I felt the new characters were all quite likeable. The creators created a great ragtag bunch there. Even if the story fills a gap that doesn't necessarily need to be filled, I had fun watching these characters.
+It was sooo awesome seeing the rebels in action like never before. I'm talking both in space (although ROTJ still wins) and on foot.
+It was interesting seeing the higher-ups in the rebel alliance actually functioning (or not functioning).
+Set design and set-pieces in general were terrific.
+Costume design was amazing. They perfectly blended classic 70s Star Wars designs with new ideas. I'm not just talking about troopers (which were all just so awesome, new and old), but also about all those lovely weirdos on Jehda. They were all so cool.
+Seriously though, who is gonna design and sell those awesome jackets with the puffy stripe sleeves? I want.
+I got a kick out of some of those cameos and callbacks. Bail Organa, the droids, the rebel pilots from the death star run, blue squadron...no Porkins though :(
+It was neat seeing the Force acknowledged outside of the circle of Jedi.
+Vader wrecking rebel scum was badass.

-Movie dragged at times. Some would say in the middle, but I thought the final battle dragged as well. It just took so long for that pilot to hook up his damn radio. And for Jyn and Cassian to get that tape. Then when they finally get it, they have to climb. And it took forever. We know how the movie ends going into it, so this stuff really shouldn't take so long to view, because suspense is already hobbled.
-Blind dude was cool, but holy shit tropes. Tropes everywhere.
-I did not enjoy CGI Tarkin. The effect was obvious and it took me right out. I'm also not sure that it was entirely in good taste. He didn't have to be part of the plot.
-I also did not enjoy CGI Leia. It did not look good. Very uncanny valley, especially with the eyes. Besides, it wasn't necessary. Save a couple hundred thousand dollars and just show her in the hood from behind. We know who she is, no face required, we get it.
-Continuing with a theme here, although I enjoyed some callbacks, I definitely thought they went too far at times. Did we need to see Dr. Evazan and Ponda Baba on Jehda? So they were at the site of the first firing of the Death Star and then coincidentally in the same cantina as the plans like a day or two later? Also, did the Death Star really have to be linked to lightsabers?
-How does Leia think she's gonna tell Vader she's on a diplomatic mission when her ship was at the damned battle and Vader had already practically stepped on board before it got away?
-Although it was cool seeing Vader tear it up, it was also pointless (except it looked cool). They just couldn't resist the opportunity though, I get it.
-Jyn didn't end up being quite the character the trailers protrayed. I know trailers are trailers and the movie is the movie, but she didn't seem at all cocky and rebellious like I would have expected.

I'll no doubt come up with more, but yeah, this was just a stream of thoughts. I liked the movie, will buy it.

Good point

Supposedly the actress did record radio chatter(not known if it was Hera though).
However the Ghost was in the battle, Chopper was on Yavin 4 and "General Syndulla" was called over the intercom of Yavin Base.
The Ghost (or another VCX-100, since they will probably never come out and say if that ship is actually the Ghost or not) was also on Yavin IV, it appeared a bit in one of the hanger scenes, I believe when Jyn arrives on the planet or something. I'm not exactly sure when, because I missed seeing it (that was the Ghost appearance I was a tad bit upset about that I missed, just because I read before going that the Ghost was visible in another scene besides the one from the trailer when the Rebel fleet shows up, so I was on the lookout and never saw it a second time).

No way people actually applauded her in your theater. I only ask because when I saw The Force Awakens at midnight last year, she was the only cast member who didn't get applause. But crowds are all different, I guess. Although I didn't like A Rogue One, I actually kind of liked the CG Tarkin. The first scene I hated it. As it went on, it grew on me.

Damn skippy. Just looking at that gif was a mistake. I haven't rewatched BSG in too long.

Went to an early screening on wed. The only times the theater erupted in R1 was when the movie opened with the the "A Long Time Ago..." crawl and when Leia appeared. LOTS of cheers for young CG Carrie. Vader had everyone gasping pretty much right beforehand.

Something that wasn't quite lining up for me was the timeline for construction of the Death Star. At the end of Catalyst the thing has been under construction for quite a while (despite a temporary setback) and they've even been doing tests of the weapon concept. It's already been taking so long that the Emperor is getting antsy because they need it to start tamping down on rebellion. But at the start of Rogue One at least a year or so has to have passed since the end of the book, and then it has to be a minimum of 15 years later (probably more) when we meet adult Jyn. And the Death Star is just completed?

And Felicity Jones is 33? Haven't seen her in anything else (other than Meadowlands but didn't know who she was then) and assumed she was maybe mid-20s.

I rate this as one of the best if not the best starwars movie out of all of them . Genuinely felt for all the guys as they got slaughtered and honestly expected the heroine to survive so that was a nice surprise .

Loved all the tie ins to the originals as well and they pulled off tarkin really well.

Love the grittiness and see Vader finally go badass for once was awesome.

Can't wait to see it again. Disney are knocking it out the park

I just wish I caught Chopper, I even knew about it and was looking and still missed.

B-Wings and A-Wings weren't used until after the Battle of Yavin.

Rebels retconed that.
its just a different cell that had A-wings,
Bwing was only in prototype form at that time though.

Obi-Wan was an extremely well regarded General, he probably considered Obi-Wan being involved in all upcoming conflicts priority.

Bwing isn't supposed to exist until ROTJ. They had one in Rebels, but it was like a prototype.

I was wondering if they had one on screen for a split second. Nice nod to Rebels.

It's the Ghost. Pretty sure Filoni's said so somewhere already.
Ah, okay then. Nice that someone would confirm it.
I know people were speculating as soon as they saw it in the trailer, saying that they could see where the Phantom should have been docked had it not already been destroyed in Rebels. Seems like if they are going to namedrop a "General Syndulla" and have Chopper in the film (didn't catch that, but I've never seen Rebels. I have the Chopper crew card for the X-Wing minis game but don't think I have looked at the actual art enough to know what he looks like), then it should be the Ghost and not a random other ship.

Well yea, Death Star's don't get built overnight :p

I really wanted to like this movie. I thought the concept was great and was excited to see where it would go. But movie suffers from being put on rails and doesn't allow its cast to deviate from anything that isn't pushing the plot forward. Jynn Erso barely has a personality. Shes the only one with a backstory and its entirely banal. As for everyone else I can't even remember their names they were so vague.

So when everyone died I really didn't feel anything for them. Except for maybe that fat X-Wing pilot.

There's another way to look at this, which is how I'm looking at it. Don't look at these as main characters. The main character is the Rebellion. You're supposed to see the struggles, the loss, the sacrifice. I don't think we were meant to have emotional ties to the individual characters. I think they intended us to have an emotional tie to what they were fighting for, and if you look at it from that perspective, I think it makes the movie that much more enjoyable.

Honestly i'd have like to seen Hera at the briefing but understandably it puts Rebels in a bind with being committed to her survival.
General Syndulla could be her dad if the show wants to kill her off eventually or whatever.
And the Ghost could be Cham or Sabine, Zeb for that matter.

In official canon though, it's first appearance was in Rebels right?

Can't remember but I *think* they mentioned it being very old.

How did I miss this?

As I said in my last post about it heI confirmed to be the Ghost, I missed Chopper but that was because I've never seen Rebels and didn't know what Chopper looked like. I just pulled out my binder of X-Wing TMG cards to look at the crew card and saw that he was a droid, which I did not know (a small Astromech-looking droid too, which makes me interested in seeing Rebels since Chopper is a pilot for the Ghost in X-Wing TMG). Now that I know what he looks like, I know that I did see him. I didn't know it was him, but I saw the droid and thought "Well that droid looks a bit fancy and like he may be important."

Vader corridor scene made the movie for me. I enjoyed it all the way but it was way plot-focused so I was really only into the action and the finale definitely delivered, though I was way more interested in the space battle going on than the ground combat.

The Ghost?
I was honestly surprised how much screen time it got, At least 4 different scenes in the space battle.

I missed it on Yavin though.

Its funny when you think that Hera, Zeb,Sabine and Chopper are there making their little puns and jokes while fighting and in the meantime Jyn and her team are being slaughtered.

I absolutely would love if we saw Rogue One from the Ghost's perspective as their series finale or something.

Now I'll be disappointed when this doesn't happen.

Would love that to happen even if the series doesn't make it that far.
Just tack it on as an epilogue episode or two.

I'll post my thoughts before reading the thread.

Um. That's a really good point and a pretty huge continuity mistake, for a film that is all about setting up an existing film.

I don't think it really makes any difference. They were lying before this movie came out. They're still lying now. The lie was always thin bullshit before. Now it's just more of a "fuck you, I'm sticking to my story, do something about it" kind of lie as opposed to "nobody will believe this but you can't prove shit, fuck you." kinda lie.

But there's no reading of Star Wars movie in which everyone on either side of the confrontation doesn't know the rebels are lying their ass off at the beginning of the movie. Rogue One doesn't change that.
Bobby says it best

What did you guys think about all the crazy ass ships and storm trooper variants they put in that were never in the original trilogy? Kind of neat to see but also weird.

It's a weird complaint, particularly regarding the trooper variants. Where should the shore troopers have appeared in the originals? Why would you expect death troopers to be a common sight?

In addition to Bobby's thoughts, I've seen another expanation thrown around that because they made the jump to hyperspace, they "lot" Vader so Vader had to essentially hunt down the ship based mostly on knowledge that it was a blockade runner, of which there are thousands in the galaxy. So he could've simply had the wrong one when he boarded Tantive IV.

Didn't he say "she". I figured it was a wink to Ahsoka since he mentioned she was helpful in the clone wars or something. I mentioned it a couple pages back but I missed a line or two somehow, so at first thought Kenobi, then he said She, then leia was the only cameo the rest of the way.

That's plausible enough, too.

But it's not like the lie they were all telling needed to be plausible. It was a pretty easily blown-open lie. Vader never believed it. He was right not to.

This movie doesn't change that at all. If anything, all it does is make the rebels more defiant.

I mean, look at Leia selling "I don't know what you're talking about" now. She might as well be saying "suck my fuckin' dick, I ain't giving you shit."

You can't track a ship at hyperspace. Who knows hiw long it takes Vader to find her. Leia saying you don't know it was this corellian corvette.

Nah, she's saying "We don't have the plans, we're on a diplomatic mission." She's lying. Vader obviously tracked them through hyperspace somehow. Someone brought up some sci-fi bullshit earlier in the thread about hyperspace buoys, which sounds good enough for me. I know in the Radio Drama version of this, they get the plans beamed directly to the ship, and immediately jump, and think they're safe, only to drop out of hyperspace at Tatooine, and almost IMMEDIATELY get rushed on. So far as I can tell, there's no version of this story in which they don't immediately get got after dropping out of Hyperspace.
