I saw part of Phantom Menace the other day. It was rough, but my choices were that or Crystal Skull. I should've vhosen the latter
The Vader comic handled this really well, not only in the scene where Boba Fett reveals Luke's last name to Vader and Vader gets hyper pissed at Sheev, but also when Aphra finds the mortician on Naboo who took care of Padme's funeral.
Lucas didn't think that far ahead.
Hmm hadn't considered this. Fairly suitable point. However Kylo senses Han's presence on Star Killer and Han isn't force sensitive in the slightest. So if Kylo can sense Han somewhere in his vicinity wouldn't Vader be able to sense Leia right in front of him? Not trying to strike down you position just testing it because I find it interesting.

It feels like two movies stitched together:
one about a group of outlaws recruited by the rebels to steal the death star plan, the other a proper prequel to episode 4.
Both good movies but frankenstein isn't so good.

I guess, except in Jedi when Luke asks Leia "Do you remember your mother? Your real mother?" and then Leia goes on to describe someone she actually knew.
Please nobody say it was the force, Lucas just clearly wrote himself into a hole.

Presumably Ren is able to sense Han not specifically because he's family, but rather because he's already familiar with his "presence". Or some such.
Kylo had lived with Han for most of his life, he was used to his presence. As far as Vader was concerned, Leia was some annoying uppity traitor. He wasn't familiar with her outside of politics.
I really hope the Blu-ray contains a ton of deleted scenes. I would love to know that they were originally going for.
Too bad! Latent Force sensitivity/memories is the answer. She even had a Force vision of Padme in the Leia comic without realizing what's going on, which was a really nice moment.

Heh... That's the same exact thing I told my friend at the end.
I mean, Mr. James Earl Jones always kills it, but you can definitely tell his age in this one. Captain Obvious and all, but it bugged me how old his voice sounds in Rogue One in comparison to ANH which takes place like days after it.
His voice in Episode III still resembled his old one, but it's been 11 years since...

The lines he had with Krennic bordered on too long. When he first starts I thought it sounded spot on, but as his dialogue got longer his voice sounded different. Still better than any voice actor imitation out there. I think the voice change we hear in this explains why his voice is mixed differently in Rebels, like they were trying to hide it.

That's definitely not a good answer. Leia speaks about Padame like someone she knew first hand, "she died when I was very young"--oh you mean seconds after you were born? haha
Also why can't Luke remember her then? He's got them there Force Powers™ too. Awful writing.
Having rewatched it a second time now, that first third still blows but the ending is still mind-blowing. I'll still always wonder about what this film might have been with better character scenes but I'll take it. Also can I say that the music still isn't sitting well with me. It really sticks out and they really should have just had Michael stick with imitating JW this time around. Heck, I liked the trailer #2 music better than anything in the movie.

Leia looked great. Tarkin varied on a shot-by-shot basis. Some looked awesome, some looked iffy.

...I thought they both looked great. You could see the "seams" in Tarkin, but I thought it was well done.

I thought Tarkin looked fine for the most part...a few scenes were worse than others but Leia...ugh could have done without it. Just have the ending be her turning around and go black before it shows the face.
Digital Cushing was probably something ILM had already spent years working on.

Threw me off. Didn't disgust me as much as others, and I understand why they tried it. I recognize that it is state of the art work, but at this point state of the art isn't good enough. I honestly can't recall one of his lines because I was so taken out of his scenes. I'm open to it growing on me though. Would've preferred a recasting

I was able to brace myself for this one a bit more. I didn't think it looked convincing, but at least it was quick and relatively painless. Once again, would've preferred a recast. Also, regarding the voice, it was weird seeing young Leia speak without the mid-Atlantic accent.
I found this video of some still of Leia and Tarkin. With a 2nd look, yeah, it looks a lot more obvious.
I saw the film last Thursday, but I wanted to read this thread before posting my impressions. Though that gets difficult as the thread moves about as fast as I can read it.
Anyway, a lot of what I wanted to say has already been said, especially in how Rogue One works well to enhance A New Hope, giving some new interpretations and emotions to old scenes. I do like the idea of Leia just outright lying to Darth Vader's face, and he knows it, but can't do anything about it.
However, despite all the Vader talk, I didn't see anyone point out how Rogue One also enhances The Empire Strikes Back. As if it needed it. We see two distinct emotional states of Vader here. There's the almost casual Vader who quips and makes lame jokes, back up by sheer malice, and then there's serious Vader. Who says nothing and is a monster. Now think of Luke's duel with Vader. Who does he meet? Casual or serious Vader? Yeah, the Dark Lord is quipping and toying with him and generally having an amusing time. This is what Vader does for fun. Until Luke manages to avoid him for too long and he switches to serious, and just comes at him to end this fight NOW. So Luke lost a hand. That makes Vader's surprise attack with his fast breathing and all out offense so much scarier because we've seen what he can do. Luke is horribly outmatched. Vader was just having a bit of fun at work up until then.

*Maybe* they'd include test footage (if that was test footage). I don't see any way Lucasfilm will include anything that was subject to reshoots and/or was reworked plot-wise.

Tarkin looked pretty good. I mean, you could tell he was CGI from a mile away, but it's one of the best CGI'd actors I've ever seen.
When he appeared on screen I though they would just show an actor with prosthetics and only from behind (like they did at the end of Episode III, which was also amazing), careful not to show too much of his face.
And then he turns around. I got to admit my jaw fell to the floor. Not really because of the quality of the CGI, but because I didn't expect them to actually show the whole character for so much screentime.
Leia looked more fake, and I thought her cameo was completely unnecessary.
I understand how important Tarkin is to the first Death Star, but having a CGI re-creation of Peter Crushing is just... weird. Every time he was on screen I almost started laughing, it looks really fake.
I think the movie would've been way better if Vader had been the stand in for Tarkin in those scenes.

They knew, they were consulted & compensated beforehand.
Ah for sure. But just imagine what it would feel to watch a family member that died more than 20 years ago 'acting' once again on screen.
It must be a very weird feeling.
There's just something so unsettling about both the skin, and how overly defined some of the features on Leia look. Like either she's wearing way too much makeup that it doesn't look natural or something...

Cassian not shooting Erso or even the frikkin EMPIRE GENERAL WHO IS IN WHITE AND TOTALLY LOOKS LIKE AN IMPORTANT MILITARY PERSON was an irritating moment. How does he suddenly change his mind like that?
Donnie Yen was awesome and I am to take it he has Force Affinity but hasn't been fully instructed in using the force thus isn't a Jedi?

My headcanon says that the Stormtroopers missed Chirrut Imwe not because the Force/faith protected him, but because they are the stupid, incompetent soldiers that cannot aim to save their lives, just like in the OT.
It's funnier that way.
