Thinking on it some more, I see RO as a fan-made SW film like TFA except the RO fanfic writer made boring characters, had a hard-on for Vader, and knew how to write vehicular warfare.

I'm not sure how Darth Vader in his ANH armor slaughtering Alderaanian rebels trying to board the Tantive IV to deliver the Death Star plans is "prequel fanservice".

It was about damn time! After TFA was stupid fan service for OT lovers. We all get a piece of it. :)

Also Vader was far better and more intimidating here than in the entire Episode IV.
Well yeah. Vader is ultimately second fiddle to Tarkin and his death star in IV even if not everyone remembers it that way. Still think he was at his best in V though.

Hard-on for Vader? They showed incredible restraint in the movie with Vader. The movie was 2 hours and he was there for 4 minutes. A fan film he'd be there half the running time.

I think Vader got darker and more menacing in Episode V, since Tarkin was basically the main villain in IV. But that's just me. :)

Agree with both of you. Tarkin is the main villain in IV; that's how it tends to feel to me, although Vader isn't too far off.

And yes, ESB Vader is best Vader. Whenever I rewatch the OT, it strikes me how ambivalent I feel toward Vader in ANH. With Empire and Jedi, he is so much better, especially Empire.

Restraint? The movie had him force choke a high ranking dude under him (because that's what Vader does), use his red lightsaber (cause he has a red lightsaber) and kill dudes (cause, again, he does these things).

Felt like a Vader power fantasy. While I thought Vader's final scene killing those rebel dudes was cool, it was cringier to others and I can definitely see how.

If anything, it felt like the fullfillment of a promise made in ANH.
They simply didn't have the SFX to show off Vader in the ANH as they did in R1, but for him to have the galactic reputation he does, it's kinda heavily implied he's still a bit more than just a middle manager.

I agree him in combat was far more intimidating but in general he was all the same, which just goes to show how great he has been throughout.

Seriously get over yourself. There was nothing cringy about Vaders final scene.

People were fantasizing about him hunting down each of the heroes one by one throughout the movie, basically replacing Krennic as the main villain. That's what a fan film looks like, not showing up for one or two scenes where it makes total sense for him to be there considering how IV starts.

He was in 2 scenes . If the movie was chock full of Vader fanboyism he would've been the main villain and would have hunted down and killed each main cast member individually.

For me "UHHSUM FORCE POWARZ VADER" was the worst thing about the whole movie.

Stupid fan service for prequel lovers, and has nothing to do with the way Vader was depicted in ANH, TESB or ROTJ.

wrong

The scene on that lava planet ("Mustafar"? Why'd you want to stay at the place where you got crippled?) was also just cringy.

Rogue One would be a better movie without these scenes.

whoosh

Is it a C3PO Power fantasy when he makes his neurotic comments, because thats what he does? Man, TFA was a 3P0 Power fantasy, so cringy.

Well I mean, C3PO does like two things: translate stuff and complain/look out for himself. He's comedy relief so you don't have to do much with C3PO in his scenes.

Now with Vader.... I mean, in the OT, we had scenes of Vader just talking down at people or being weird with his intuition.

Everyone with criticisms must be a keyboard warrior, right?
Everyone gettin upset over two goddamn scenes, must have an issue

It's two fucking scenes that make sense in the context of the series as a whole, but a vocal minority is acting as if it was Jar-Jar in the suit making poop jokes and doin shit

I spent the whole climax waiting for Jyn to pull those two sword-things off her back and have a big awful fight scene where she ends in this pose:

So glad it never happened :P

They showed restraint in his on-screen time.
The way he is depicted as an unstoppable killing machine though is more in line with the prequels and some of the more cheesy computer games ("Force Unleashed").

In no way, apart from the costume, this feels like the Vader they have shown in ANH.

That's basically the argument for George Lucas doing all these "highly praised" changes to the original trilogy.
The SFX weren't there, so the stuff depicted in the original OT is all wrong.

Even though in the OT people fear Vader, they don't fear him because he's some big man in a mask and suit. There is nothing wrong with the scene with him killing the troops, him being unhinged one out of twenty times makes sense. Him being PISSED at the beginning if Star Wars, makes sense.

People complaining about the final Vader scene are nitpicking like a motherfucker. That literally was maybe the greatest SW scene of all time.

Of all time? It was pretty cool, I concede. Best scene in the franchise, I... can't. :p

Yup, alot of people here on Neogaf are pointing at flaws that don't exist. I have spoken to many friends who are Star Wars fans and they loved Rogue One especially in regards to what they did with Darth Vader.

I wonder if in a year's time everyone on the Internet will be parroting what Mike and Jay said on their Rogue One review.
I feel like most people agree with the main points of the review but it just didn't detract as much for some as much as others. Doubt there will be much of a 180, but then again I always think predicting future opinions on movies is silly.

People on internet will turn on this movie in two months. Bet.

Nah, I feel like the battle lines are pretty much already drawn.

It's already divisive, as opposed to TFA. I think some people know what they like and are willing to forgive the flaws, and others are unwilling to see it any differently.

Something can only be objectively good or objectively bad, and if you aren't 100% on board you're just making things up. Clearly

The good thing is now I get to also read how 7 was actually the worst Star Wars movie and Rogue One is as good as Empire, if not better. Sure.

You could if your favorite character of all time was Darth Vader. That scene was well beyond "pretty cool". It felt like a fulfillment of a legend. And after seeing that, I want more. I want a Vader crusade movie as he searches for Obi Wan while hunting down what's left of the Jedi.

This should be the obi wan movie.

Yes! With Ewan reprising his role! It could be like a stealth suspense horror film. With Vader as Vorhees, mowing down Jedi opposition as Obi Wan does his best to stay hidden while stealthly fighting back in some way.

I feel like there is so much story there to tell between ROTS and RO.

Ehhhh... what's the specific context of Obi-wan being hunted down by Vader? I always got the impression he was at Tatoonie all that time in hiding not daring to attract attention to Luke. What could possibly be the interaction there? And that all seems silly when we know Obi-wan just waltzes up to Vader in A New Hope.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking.
Obi Wan alone trying to stealthily meet up and regroup with the other Jedi but they keep getting brutally cut down with Obi Wan never being in the right place at the right time. Definitely Ewan Obi Wan written like a more serious version of him in the Clone Wars show. While Vader is mowing down Jedi the one he's really after is Obi-Wan

I want my Obi-Wan movie so damn bad. Ewan wants it, fans want it, fuck a Fett movie
Fuck Bobba Fett in general
See this is why we're bros.

So with those U Wings / Rebel star fighters what is the logic to folding out their wings? Also what is the actual name since I saw both while googling?

I assume the design is inspired by WW2 carrier aircraft, which had folded wings in order to store more of them on a ship.
