Did anybody here get a chance to see the Dunkirk prologue in front of it tho?

Jesus christ trailers did not do a good job of selling just how masterful the tension will likely be in that movie. The dogfight was beautiful too, sound design was terrifyingly loud with the German bomber.

As a kid -- and still to this day -- Luke walking the plank in ROTJ, only to flip back up as R2 launches his lightsaber into the air, catch it, and flick it on to reveal a GREEN blade was one my most hype moments in movies.

Aside from a few silly moments I feel like ROTJ is pretty damn underrated. The Ewok distaste is amongst the most overblown, irrational hate spewed by HC fans.

Real talk, the ewoks aren't even the worst part about the ewok scenes, it's the acting/dialog of the three stars that drags it down in the middle *runs away*

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope/The Force Awakens
Return of the Jedi/Rogue One
Revenge of the Sith
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

Hamill was good, but yeah, by this point in time Ford gave negative fucks and Fisher was coked out of her mind, and their chemistry was toxic.

I think the biggest issue with Return of the Jedi is that the characters don't really do much in the way of arcs in that movie. Everyone outside of Luke didn't really have much of one in the original Star Wars, but that movie so expertly handled Luke's development that it worked. Then Empire came and was a masterpiece, with Luke, Han, Leia, even Vader and Lando going through the ringer. Jedi didn't really expand on it much further by its end. It did some cool stuff with Luke and Vader, but that was pretty much entirely in the third act. Aside from the plot detail of being unfrozen, Han's pretty much exactly the same - he just gets gifted the love triangle with Leia since Luke's not an option anymore! Leia and Lando do nothing outside of participating in some fun action scenes.

Return of the Jedi has some great and memorable moments, absolutely. It's just a bit more shallow than its two predecessors.

WE TALKIN' BOUT RANKINGS?!

1. ESB

2. ANH
3. TFA

4. ROTJ

5. TPM
6. ROTS

7. AOTC

Haven't seen RO yet

Yeah, that's mine, exactly. I'd probably put Rogue One at right around Return of the Jedi levels.

My Ranking...

1. Empire
2. Rogue One
3. Return
4. Force Awakens
5. New Hope

THAT'S IT...THAT IS IT...THAT IS IT!

My explanation...

-Empire - Obvious GOAT.

-Rogue one - This is Star wars as Star wars can be. I mean, this is probably the most "Star" and "Wars" than ANY of the movies.

-Return - Best beginning to any of the star wars movies. A very satisfying third act (I liked the Ewoks so fuck you). and a very satisfying conclusion to a trilogy

-TFA - Re-ignited what I was unsure of being re-ignited due to the god awful Prequels. Made me love Star Wars again.

-New Hope - classic of course and the movie that set it all off. However, looking back on it now without my Child goggles. It just doesn't hold up as well as empire and RoTJ. The acting isn't as sharp for one. And as you watch it, you can get the sense that the people making this had no idea what this would become. It's like going from this to Empire, you can tell everyone turned on their A game in the Sequel.

Just my opinion of course, and I grew up on the original trilogy.

Sorry, but I don't acknowledge the prequels.

also on the subject of ROTJ, I want to reiterate that Yub Nub is a *terrible* closing song -- for both the movie and the trilogy -- and replacing it with the new Williams track was one of the few improvements the special editions added.

I don't subscribe to the "Lucas ruined my childhood/fuck Lucas" narrative, but regarding ROTJ, I will say that the one absolutely unforgivable change Lucas made was adding the NOOOO to Anakin's redemption/throwing the Emperor down the shaft. Way to ruin like, *THE* climax/catharsis of the entire saga, George.

HELL NO...

Yub Nub was my SHIT!!!! especially how it blended in with the credits music was perfect.

Yub Nub is a CLASSIC. im gonna play that shit in my car on the way home from work today with the windows down.

Nah, it doesn't really work.

VADER: Don't play games with me, Your Highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time. You passed directly through a restricted system. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you.

What he says here makes absolutely no sense if he was chasing them directly from the battle at Scarif. It wasn't a mere violation of restricted space. And Vader knows that the plans were not beamed directly to that ship.

If Leia's ship wasn't at the battle and they received the plans later on everything would fit nicely. But no, they had to cram in a direct transition at the very end of Rogue One. Unfortunately that makes the transition very rough and forced.

That line isn't in the movie...
He just says "Don't act so surprised, Your Highness. You weren't on any mercy mission this time. Several transmissions were beamed to this ship by Rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you."

Nothing about a restricted system.

That's a baller ass Williams piece, too.

I don't know if it's worth dealing with that basura Jedi Rocks song or Vaders no

But for something as important as the final scene of the trilogy yeah that new song is so much better

That would not work, the reason why they hand her a disk is because she inserts the disk in R2 in episode 4. What Vader says to her at the beginning is still true because her ship was docked in the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser

The disc could have been created after Rogue One in the same way it was created during Rogue One.

Her ship could have received the transmitted version instead of the hard copy version, then produced the hard copy before or even after being boarded.

This idea it for me, too. I'm pretty indifferent to all the changes, but that one takes the cake.

I've never seen this version and never will.

I'll never get a blu-ray copy of ROTJ I'm happy with. Don't like Yub Nub in the original cut, despise the idea of this Vader scream in the most recent special edition. My ideal version would be the 1997 Special Edition that was only ever put out on VHS/laserdisc, but that seems way too precise for Lucasfilm/Disney to ever touch again.

The Special Editions are great. My favorite release though were the 1995 VHS, which I believe were, aside from the shat 2004 DVDs, the last time the OT was available in an unaltered state.

The reality is we'll never see those versions again, even with Disney now running the ship.

Yes but what is the point of that? The dialogue Vader says at the beginning of ANH is still correct anyway since her ship was docked in the star cruiser. All Vader knows before arriving was that their base was being attacked and some plans were being sent to that cruiser.

There's something weirdly nostalgic about those VHS box covers.

I was thinking that after seeing it the trailer didn't do anything for me I was stunned than I watched that prologue and was gripping my seat haha

I actually thought the fact that the dude got the disc through at all was massively implausible given that Vader could have force grabbed it at any time.

Would have been much more believable if the guys he slaughtered were just protecting the ship from his incursion so it could be prepped to escape the battle zone once they'd received the plans over encrypted channels.

Same here. I'm one of the people that didn't really care so much about the changes he made in the special editions and such, but that one was so fucking infuriating to me I couldn't believe it was real. Especially after all of the years since the ROTS "NOOOOOOOO" got memed to hell and back on the internet, seeing it in ROTJ was such BS.

I was a kid growing up when I saw RoTJ. Truth be told I was probably too young to really appreciate Star Wars and Empire (though I still loved them as "Star Wars"), and related to RotJ more. I understood the point Of the Ewoks even as a kid. They're the technologically inferior natives, but whom the empire chose to ignore to bulls their shield base. After all, what could some sticks and stones do against the technological advances of the imperial forces?

Turned out to be their downfall.

The Ewoks were not the Empire's downfall.

It all boils down to a group of seriously idiotic guards who decided to open up the friggin' blast door to a dude covering half his face who claimed "the rebels are dead, open up!".

Because yeah, fuck the protocol, and fuck asking for a valid ID. No. just open the door to the guy on the blurry screen, covering half his face. No question asked.

Saturday cartoon-levels of plot, and quality writing right there, and my only issue with ROTJ.

Boss took us all out to Rogue One showing.

Some cheesy dialogues and overly melodramatic scenes. The 2 dimensional villain is I dunno tongue in cheek or what. I laughed at all his lines.

Bodhi Rook and Mads Mikkelsen were the highlight of the movie imo. Thin story. Good visuals. Excellent sound effects.

7/10.

Finally got a chance to see Rogue One last night, and overall I liked it a lot. I enjoyed all of the nods to long-time fans, although I thought a few were overdone, most notably the appearance of Evazan and Ponda Baba. Those kinds of things are unnecessary and make it seem like the universe is a lot smaller than it should be.

Was also disappointed a bit at the plot. I was expecting a commando heist film, but what we got was very straight forward. Yes, it had some cool characters, but hardly any of them were given time to be developed, and instead of having some intricate plans that had to come together in order to steal the Death Star data, it was just "well, let's fly off to Scariff and hope for the best." Would have liked to have seen more there.

That said, I did like that we got to see some other elements of the Star Wars universe that we haven't seen in the past, and nothing that really circulated around the Jedi. That did add some nice depth to the setting that has been lacking in the films at times.

All right, I'll bite:

1.- ESB
2.-ANH
3.-TFA
4.- ROTJ (Might be displaced depending on how well RO ages)
5.- RO
6.- ROTS
7.- TPM
8.- AOTC

I was under the impression that they they didn't have encrypted channels and they couldn't take the risk of transmitting the plans just to have the whole empire intercept them and discover the flaw that was planted in the Death Star. The Empire also couldn't take the risk of killing everyone since some ships escaped and needed some hostages for interrogation to locate the rebel base and the plans they stole.

So I just saw it. And I really liked it, especially the second part, the heist. Plot was perhaps a bit thin and characters not very well developed, but I cared for them anyway and was sad for their (inevitable) demise.
Movie fleshed out the star wars universe, was refreshing to see the gritty, boots on the ground part of the rebellion, and no jedis. Like another commenter already said, there was more 'star' and 'war' in this movie then most of the rest combined.

Special effects were great too. They space battles and dogfighting in the second half were some of the greatest I've seen in a long time. How cool was the 'crashing one star destroyer in another' scene eh?

All in all, great Hollywood entertainment, a 7.5/10 for me.

About ranking.

My best friend is a Star Wars fan and say AotC is the best Star Wars movie for the lightsables battles, romance and history. That is the movie he "watch wint the girls".
