Rogue One: A Star Wars Story |OT| They rebel - SPOILERS

Just came back from the cinema, and enjoyed it much more than TFA, which I thought was pretty weak.

I can see why some find the character arcs lacking, but I think that may have been part of the point the movie was trying to make.

Soooo I'm watching ANH. They kinda fucked up in RO making the Death Star capable of lightspeed. It ruins the ending of ANH where the Death Star takes all that time to get into firing range of Yavin when it just insta-appeared at Scariff.

The Death Star could always travel through hyperspace. They just didn't want to fire it through a gas giant in ANH (never really clarified why though) so they had to get into firing range.

The last 15 minutes of this film is better than anything I've seen from the Star Wars series thus far. Generally speaking, these films are quite forgettable pieces of cinema running on pure nostalgia. I have to say, cinema is pretty shit these days. Better drama on TV.

Flying between star systems would have taken slightly longer than 15 minutes without lightspeed. The waiting period was just final manoeuvres when preparing to fire

Is that information actually given in ANH? The gas giant stuff

Is it just me, or was there too much music in this film? It felt like it could have achieved more with the tone they wanted if they allowed more silence and a more percussive music mix than the orchestra heavy Williams-esc score they used.

+ I enjoyed a lot of the first half's world building. I enjoyed the practical effects, the ridiculous amount of puppets and different looking characters and locations. Felt like Star Wars but doing something different, like the very few good parts of the prequels; the fact that they were expanding upon the world rather than doing the same thing.

- Second half has a ton of pacing issues and the last battle is way too long and fuckin headache inducing (regardless of how well made it's done and executed)

+ Vader fight is cool. It's real silly fan service but fuck it man it's Star Wars and whatever, I enjoyed it. Cool for cool has it's place.

- Why did Forest Whitaker die. Wtf was that unearned awful supposedly emotional moment? I actually laughed

- Felicty Jones (or rather what she's given to work with, too) is fucking horrible in it. As bland a character as I think ive ever seen, jesus.

- Characters are actually all bad. There's no build up or proper backstory to any of them. I dont care. No stakes to em.

- We get a frickin hollywood "sacrifice" scene to each single one of them one after the other. gimme a break.

+ I did like that they killed all of em tho.

- Small nitpick but the reusing of old original trilogy footage was jarring. You could easily notice it and it served no real purpose other than create some interesting "trivia" buzz I guess.

+ I really liked Raddus

- I wish I knew more about Raddus and his ship than him somehow being the sudden last half unspoken hero

- CGI characters. why. why you do that. Tarkin was somewhat ok at times. Last minute CG young Leia tho? my god, what a shit way to end the thing. I couldnt believe it.

I like the first half of the movie more than I liked a lot of Force Awakens actually so there's that.

I just got back from it. I thought TarkIn looked terrible and it'll be laughed at in years to come. Leia seemed better to me.

But overall I think I like it 2nd or 3rd best in the entire Star Wars franchise.

saw today, loved it.

the battle sequences was the most warlike of any Star Wars since the Hoth battle in ESB and the space battle in ROTJ

my biggest gripe with JJ Abrams was that he rushes sequences and scenes too quickly and we couldn't savour the air battles much.

Rougue ONE fixed that with the real defintion of the word "Wars" in Star Wars.

The tie up at the end was full of fan service LOL

I think it has to do with the darker lighting. I could handle it at times I guess but I fucking hate it even on principle.

why do something like that. it's never going to be not-distracting and it takes you out of the world in the sense that even if someone likes it; all they're gonna think about while watching is "oh! how impressive!"

it's never gonna be a performance or a character and they're never gonna feel like something that belongs and fits along the narrative. it's a fuckin shitty "trick" that takes you out of it regardless of what you think of it.

What point was that?

The whole movie to me seemed like a contrast to what Star Wars was all about up to this point: Almost invincible space wizards cutting people to bits while looking badass doing that.
Rogue One felt kind of like the antithesis to that, as in regular people that don't have the privilege of being space wizards with complete arcs, because grunts on the ground simply die before they can get the luxury of having a satisfying character arc.

This movie was amazing and it was the Star Wars movie I always wanted.

It had everything I like about the franchise. The only problem I had was the sort of bad Tarkin CGI, but it was worth it to he the character in the movie.

I want more like this.

"movie was trying to make a point by being disappointing"

cool

lets shoot a whole film of a "space pedestrian" that just gets killed by a car

movie was just ridiculously lacking in terms of characters. I dont know anyone's name, I dont care, I forgot all of em.

even K2SO was the cheapest humor available, regardless of some lines landing because of Tudyk.

I almost feel like I should post a link to McKee monologue's from Adaptation.

Can we all agree that Rogue One is the best Star Wars prequel?

This should go without saying, this should be beyond debate, but opinions man.

There's gonna be some people who honestly think The Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie, it just can't be helped.

Scariff is an Imperial stronghold, well mapped, the Deathstar could exit hyperspace wherever the fuck it wanted for the perfect shot.

Yavin is some backwater no-name system (where else would the Rebels have their secret base?) so oming out of Hyperspace was a bit more pot luck, the got unlucky and had to swing around the gas giant to get a direct shot.

Or, y'know, The Force did it.

The Casino Royale of the Star Wars franchise, goddamn at the brutality and ending. Anyway by far my favorite prequel but to play armchair director I wished they cut some of the ensemble cast (defecting pilot and his mind recovery didn't do much for me, and less CGI Tarkin the better) and fleshed out more time for the Erso clan, and Cassian.

It's kind of amazing for a blockbuster these days to have a good third act. They are usually pretty epic but ultimately very boring but Rogue One is a rare gem for not falling into that trap.

I appreciated the third act in a Star Wars way, if that makes sense. It was serviceable to that.

but it has a lot of flaws as a film in my opinion. There's a silly amount of build up to it, and when it arrives it honestly just takes a bit too long. I was ready for it (and it needed to) to die down a bit and then Raddus appeared again to say shields were at 50% or something and I went "oof, okay"

it's very well made so that takes a bit of the sting off, but I'd hardly say it doesnt bore in some aspects. It'd work better with a tighter, shorter edit.

like... in what way?

Casino Royale was great because it felt small and focused

this was literally the opposite of that

The brutaility it brough to their franchises, bummer ending, and it was the most spy driven Star Wars yet. But I agree with you - the rest of my post talked about how cutting the ensemble cast and focusing on Cassian and Erso would've improved it.

Im still waiting on Felicity Jones to do fuckin anything to justify casting her in big movies. I can only take so many flat line readings and sour pouts from this woman. She is the black hole at the center of this movie.

I guess I can see the similarity on it being a bit grittier but humongous yeah to your agreement

it's funny how this started out being planned as a small heist movie and it ended up being by far the biggest "spectacle" of Star Wars' pew pews and bang booms

she's dreadful

more of a droid than K2SO

The only other film I've seen her in was a skiing one and couldn't say either way. Haven't seen the theory of everything yet. Her pout is just big teeth, been there with braces, you just look silly closing your mouth and even worse not closed but you have to choose the former.

That's fair, but I still think the entire sequence of getting the barrier down was badly realized, and their roles in its success felt hollow. He could have been a Rebel mechanic, not an defected Imperial pilot, with no impact on character or events in the third act. That's not to say I'm talking about a 1:1 character backstory to action mapping, jus that anchoring that character to doing what he did felt like a waste. I do agree he did a lot with what he had; all the actors did. Overall I liked the story here, but in the end I didn't give a shit about most of them, and that's weighing heavily on my opinion of the film. I saw TFA seven times in theaters because I loved the characters and enjoyed spending time with them. The only reason I'm seeing this a second time is because I'm at my in-laws and they haven't seen it, and always go to a movie before Christmas. This film did not resonate with me the way I hoped it would, and I'm still chewing on why.

Despite how well the action was staged - dat space battle - I'm actively dreading the third act because of how drawn out and dumb the plug/switch/plans plucking sequences are. Which is why I'm going on about them.

I think the point of making him an Imperial pilot was to show Imperials were willing to defect and that's about it. This could be a lead in to one potential Han Solo backstory although it was EU.

How much of a SW fan were yall before watching RO? I didn't grow up on SW, so I didn't think highly of the new movies. When I expressed to my buddies that I thought RO was boring, they flipped out on me and said I was wrong lol. I just found out they are hardcore SW fans, reading all of the novels and such.

Seems like:
-Neutral SW fans didn't like RO much.
-Casual SW fans liked RO well enough.
-Hardcore SW fans loved RO.

Hmm I don't know if I would classify myself as hardcore... Maybe extremist.
I love to death OT and direct derivations and games and I am showing the Despecialized Version to my Gf. The prequel trilogy don't exist.

The Force Awakens is one of the most disappointing movies I've seen.

Rogue one is amazing.
