The pre-title sequence geography often makes no real sense.

The biggest offender being Jyn beating the shuttle to her house, and the shuttle landing like a mile away once it's already passed her.

I'm probably not, but am I the only one who thought "Oh my, Final Fantasy - the Spirits within"-CGI humans have returned every time Tarkin was on screen? What a horribly distracting CGI, why could they not have done this more clever without showing those obvious shortcomings of today's CGI (mainly in terms of animation)? Yuck.

But other than that, I greatly enjoyed it, especially once the space battle started, figurative tears of joy rolled down my cheeks.

You can tell it was hacked in some areas as well. Like how Saw is supposed to be Jyn's caretaker yet for some reason he abandoned her and he barely has any screen time. He's just there to deliver a piece of plot information it's disappointing that they wasted Whitaker like that. Maybe he didn't test well among audiences.

This movie was sort of like an 80s mecha anime in terms of tone. Would be right at home with UC Gundam.

I adored that.

Totally, felt like one of the Gundam side-story OVA's that take place during the original UC storyline but don't directly have the main characters like Amuro and Char.

The whole movie to me seemed like a contrast to what Star Wars was all about up to this point: Almost invincible space wizards cutting people to bits while looking badass doing that.
Rogue One felt kind of like the antithesis to that, as in regular people that don't have the privilege of being space wizards with complete arcs, because grunts on the ground simply die before they can get the luxury of having a satisfying character arc.

I don't think that was the point of the movie. It's always in the best interests of the story to have interesting characters. You don't need to be a space wizard to be interesting. Han Solo is not a wizard and he's still interesting and has a full arc.

You can still achieve the goal of making these characters go unsung without having them be flat and uninteresting.

But they didn't all steal a ship and fly away into the sunset. They were all killed, in some big ways and in some ways that looked like a waste of that character's life. But that's what made it interesting. The plan had to succeed, however. Wouldn't have been much of a movie if the plan failed and the plans never made it off the planet now, would it?

of course the plans had to make it off, success and failure were guaranteed but they still eradicated any suspense as to the how with the trite way they carried it through.

Absolutely loved the movie - so much better than I'd expected.

There was a lot I liked about this movie and I won't type out a lengthy review. The cinematography, the world design, the story, the humour, and even the characters - it all clicked for me. Obviously, it's not without significant flaws; I agree the main ensemble could have been fleshed out a little more, the opening quarter was a bit jumpy, and I thought the CGI was pretty ropey in places. But by and large I was gripped.

If I mention nothing else, I have to say it made me feel for the sacrifices made by the 'little guys' - the ordinary soldiers who don't get jedi powers and big medal ceremonies. I became surprisingly attached to the main team, and was genuinely gutted when they started dying. I really liked the depiction of war-time sacrifice - the crew who plunge their ship into the Star Destroyers... the trooper who realises he's not going to escape and passes the disc through the locked door... the Blue team pilots who fly through the closing shield-gate to help the main crew, etc... the ending felt both heroic and tragic. By the time the credits rolled I wanted to run off and join the Rebel Alliance to help fight the evil Empire.

TFA is made for kids. RO made me feel like a kid again. That's the difference in my view.

I went and saw it a 2nd time today and k2's death for some reason hit me in the feels harder this time than the first time hahahaha

Her father sent her as an ambassador.

Why would he send an ambassador directly to a battle with the Empire? A massive battle at one of their secret military planets at that. You'd think they would have dropped her off somewhere safe first. They are lucky the Empire didn't completely obliterate their entire fleet at Scarif.

The novelization (which is canon) clarifies that the Tantive IV was undergoing repairs inside the Profundity when Raddus decided he was just going to hightail it to Scarif to join the battle.

Loved the movie and it shows the origins of Rouge Squadron so thats awesome. RIP Blue leader you were the brave one. I really loved the space battles.

Its cool how they kept consistent with the TIE fighters having flat wings for interplanet combat vs the space TIE fighters.

They finally brought X-Wings, Star Destroyers and Mon Calamari Star Cruisers to the modern age with RO. (I know TFA had ships but they were future ones)

I did not like Vader's costume. What were they thinking with that helmet? The designs on the arms and legs were odd as hell too. Why isn't it a smooth black instead of that hideous pattern? Also the chest panels were cheap looking as all hell. Red eyes were about the only cool thing.

The characters were cool and it was sad seeing them perish one after the other.

Weird thing to leave out of the movie. The reveal that Leia's ship was at the battle the whole time took a hit on my suspension of disbelief. They coulda had a quick scene where Raddus got the call about Scarif and then some random officer tells Raddus that they weren't ready because of their cargo or something.

it's basically the exact same costume as Star Wars. Helmet, too.

Weird thing to leave out of the movie.

How do you incorporate that detail without tipping off the fact you're getting Leia at the end, though?

Same reason Mustafar is the only planet not named.

Too much 'member berries basically. They don't mind adding bunch of new stormtroopers color, but Vader??
"Oh must be faithful to ANH with his dumb puns, awkward movements and plastic helmet".

I don't think Vader had ever made a pun before R1.

I think me looks great in ANH and R1 though, even with the cheaply made costume.

The shape of the helmet was the same as ANH, the main notable difference being the glossy finish more like ESB.

The pattern on the undersuit material covering the arms and legs was the same as ever, it was never smooth.

It was glossy when I saw the movie and the ridges stuck out too much. Also the helmet had this puffiness to his neck area that made it look like he was wearing a bucket.

I find your lack of memory disturbing.

(But; apology accepted, Captain Surfinn.)

...oh shit wait; you mean chronologically? Hey, maybe that was his first-ever pun in the timeline, and was like "oh that RULED, I'm going to keep doing these!"

Those aren't puns though.

As far as I know there are zero Vader puns in the films. But it doesn't matter because it was great.

I find your understanding of puns.. Disturbing.

One of the weakest aspects of the movie is the soundtrack in my opinion. But listening to it on iTunes...man it's good on its own.

Your Father Would Be Proud...tear jerker. Reminds me of the end of LOST

Wasn't R2 not on board any ship at the end, yet is magically aboard Leia's ship in New Hope?

They mentioned a jedi during the movie were they referring to obiwan?
also that was Bail Organa right?

Yes and yes. If you're talking bout his converation with Mon Mothma. They indirectly mentioned Obi-Wan and Leia. It was about Leia going to meet with Ob-Wan to ask him to help the Alliance, which is why the Rebel Blockade Runner was above Tatooine in A New Hope.

Just came from seeing this. Film was decent. TFA was the better film. Overall I thought the action was solid and the droid provided plenty of well timed humor, but the story itself was just not interesting enough to tell IMO. There were too many scenes of getting from point A to B, with nothing substantial actually happening. And I hate they do this in films.

And just damn at that ending in spite of everything that's happened today :(

Edit: I'm going back through the thread and wtf at the hyperbole on page 8. Are you serious? I understand it's like this nearly all films, but fucking come on..

After Mothma and Bail agree that war is inevitable, she tells him to contact Obi Wan since they want him on their side.

Ah that makes sense thank you.
