This movie is awesome.
Easily the best Star Wars film since A New Hope and The Empire Strikes back. (Which, before Rogue One, are the only good SW films, IMO.)

movies are less interesting when i already know what's going to happen. so i can't honestly compare this to IV, V, or VI
but the plot development is less embarrassing than I, II, & III, so i guess that makes it the best in its category by default

it's so strange how much i dislike this movie as a "star wars" movie and how much i like it as just being a movie set in the star wars universe. the movie has all i want in star wars movie yet just feels so tonally wrong that i can't help but feel indifferent to it. i'm probably just hanging onto my nostalgia reigns here but i'd like to see how i feel in a year or two about this because as of right now, this movie was a visual treat but ultimately doesn't invoke the same excitement and lasting impression that TFA had for me.

They never said the place was Coruscant.
They never said where it was in the movie, period. And based on the previous films, it's fair to have assumed it was Coruscant.
Why I assume they destroyed one of the most important places in Star Wars lore, but before doing that didn't bother telling you it was Coruscant and instead said it was in the Hosnian System, a completely new place.
Wouldn't the more logical assumption be that this is a new place in this new system?

Nope, never said the name in the movie. All that happens is you see an urban planet destroyed, then Finn says "That was the Republic!" They never indicate in the movie narrative where it was.
Why would you assume that? Star Wars blows up planets all the time. It was confusing after the movie online, everyone was asking if it was Coruscant or not.

Finally took the time to see this yesterday. Very interesting movie. Not at all what I expected with the premise. A big land and space battle at the end was probably not needed for what the story was about, but after TFA I'm sooo glad they did it.
Also after Starkiller base, I really enjoyed "low power" Death Star. Much better direction to go with "super weapons". Even comes with prettier visuals.
Overall a good movie, but the first act felt like a complete mess and as a result the movie never realizes it's full potential with it's characters and themes.

Man one thing I really loved was Saw's group,
I always said if I was in Star Wars as a rebel i'd steal and wear customized Imperial gear.

When Finn arrives at the rebel base Poe says he has info on "the weapon that destroyed the Hosnian system".
I do agree that it was poorly explained in the movie, there was a scene where Leia sends an envoy to Hosnian Prime to appeal to the Senate, but it was cut.

Saw it a second time today. Movie still holds up.
Ive seen it in 2D and 3D now. I actually think 3D adds a lot for this movie.

I only like the movies, including the prequels.
Hated TFA.
Really liked Rogue One.
Got a second viewing in yesterday, and I thought it was worth mentioning because it was in 3D but I had a worse seat this time and consequently the film was a little bit darker and more blurry. Tarkin looked pretty good, and if I hadn't seen it a bit more clearly the first time I would have struggled to identify him as CGI. I guess I can see now why some people watching on a bad screen, or with non-ideal eyesight, could have mistaken Tarkin for being an actor.

I was amazed the 2nd time I actually enjoyed the soundtrack so much more.
Tarkin looked better the 2nd time.
Leia was worse the 2nd viewing.

They said the name once, but it was really quick, so I don't fault people for being confused. I was, too. I thought it was Coruscant. The problem is that it was named AFTER it got destroyed, so as soon as you see it, you start thinking, "Oh man, that's Coruscant!"

Didn't like it that much. Aside from the visual spectacle, I don't feel like I want to see this anymore. The first part of the movie had a very interestig buildup, but then the second part was just really predictable, no suspense, not anything. They just go there and start dying because they have to.
I find surprising that people who didn't enjoy VII for the references actually like this heartless fanservice movie. The Vader scene was embarassing, fantastic to watch but really empty storywise, doesn't give you anything you needed. It was just pure fanservice, like the other many references. At least VII uses IV as a basis to make something, this is just "hey I'm a 2016 movie that has a million references that have nothing to do with the story".
About the characters yeah, they are the big problem of the movie. The droid and the blind were the only ones I cared about, the rest of the team was useless.

I saw Rogue One yesterday and, while very impressed with the set design and special effects, felt the plot and characters were very lackluster and underdeveloped. The script tries half-heartedly to cram every battle film theme (sacrifice, redemption, unity) into the 30 or so minutes of the movie's non-action sequences.
Forrest Whitaker lets himself die for no fucking reason whatsoever because these movies have sacrifice, right? But he was kind of a dick anyways, so no big loss. He subjects a brave imperial defector to mind-torture and imprisonment in order to verify his story. This is not what the good guys do; why not waterboard the poor guy while you're at it? You don't have a bionic leg to stand on when claiming the high ground over the evil empire if you do these things.
The secondary "Han Solo" character is the film's only memorable one and what potential he has is squandered in an attempt to rapidly progress through a redemption arc; he has murdered in cold blood for the rebellion and is something of an anti-hero at film's beginning, yet is somehow redeemed by the midpoint of the film (painfully telegraphed in the scene at the rebel base on Yavin IV where he volunteers the services of himself and other lost souls). I assume the catalyst for this transformation is his 10-second exchange with the perpetually sulky main character about how they both lost their families as children. See The Bourne Supremacy or even The Return of the Jedi if you want a redemption arc in an action movie done correctly.
Why does this mismatched band overcome their differences and unite for a common cause? I don't know. It's not due to the leadership of the main character; she has not a single drop of charisma. They don't joke around or bond or reminisce or empathize outside of the battle sequences, like in Saving Private Ryan. I guess it's because the Empire is bad. It seems like those rebels are pretty bad, too, shooting up a marketplace and murdering people who try to help their cause.
It's an average movie with throwaway characters and dialogue that allow audiences to take a piss break or run to the concession stand without missing anything of importance during lulls in the action.

Saw it last night. It was ok. Could have waited for a rental or something. Totally felt like a movie that the series could have went on without. There wasn't anything particularly new or surprising revealed about the Star Wars story as a whole.
Best part was Vader wrecking the rebels. Shame there wasn't more of that.

That's great, because that's exactly how I describe TFA.
That really bothers me.
In RO you go "huh that planet looks like Mustafar, must be Mustafar" turns out it is Mustafar.
In TFA you have planets that look exactly like Tattoine or Coruscant and serve the same purpose but aren't.
That's confusing for most of my friends
Destroying Coruscant would've had a much bigger impact than destroying not-Coruscant
I'm still salty about the pilot's death. He was just waiting around in the ship and one asshole lobs a grenade at his feets without even knowing he was in there. All the others I can make my peace with it but him, I can't accept it. He got captured, treated as an hostage, mind raped and this is the end he gets. He's like Steve Buscemi in the Big Lebowski.
Man Tarkin looked way to cg for my liking. Wish he was cut.

Well there's nothing wrong with giving a hint while keeping it vague. The scene would be very quick and it's right before the big battle sequence, so you wouldn't have much time to dwell on it. Then when you see the ship come out it's an "Oh yeah!" moment that feels earned, instead of an "Oh yeah!" moment immediately followed by a "Wait, wut? Why is she even here?" moment.
"Sir, we need some time to evacuate the non-military personnel"
"No time! We have to take our chances and get to Scarif immediately!"
I kind of liked the nods to those who are Rogue Squadron fans. In the Battle of Yavin there are Red and Gold squadrons - we see them again in Rogue One, as well as a Blue Squadron (that is trapped under the shield for most of the battle, which is why we don't hear of them in ANH). Also, there is like a twenty to thirty second sequence where the Red 5 pilot is killed, which of course opens up his call sign for Luke to use in the Battle of Yavin. Nothing too overt, but was nice to see.

They did nothing in my opinion to make me give a shit about anyone. So when they actually died, I didn't care.
Coworkers said they were tearing up when Donnie was walking up to the button and I was like "why? because he has a catch phrase that he repeated all movie long?"

Well, Donnie and K2SO had the most personality, so I felt something when they bit it, but I wasn't moved to tears or anything. This movie failed at making the characters actual people.

People have been 50/50 on characters it was weird the first time I saw it i was like oh well but I saw it a second time and the feels hit me for some reason can't explain it hahaha
I'm glad it wasn't because it would have made that scene even more terrible than it already is
