Steam Winter Sale 2016 thread of hoping for better deals elsewhere

Just finished Telltale Batman. It was pretty decent, I'd put it below their best games TWD, TWAU, TftB, but would still recommend Telltale fans to give it a try.

I think talking about sites like g2a is forbidden here since it's morally grey 🤐

Eh. Not forbidden, but it's very proceed with caution, 'cause there's fair chance the key you get will be a dupe, unlike sites we tend to back here (humble, Win/Mac Game Store, funstock, gamebillet, etc).

Well technically yes but the game forces you to run it at borderless Fullscreen so you basically need a beefy build to run it.

I picked up about 3 months ago and couldn't stop playing it til I finished the main game and the DLC. It ran great on my PC with a GTX 970. Performance was really good on my end.

It's great if you have a powerful machine, just make sure to get the DLC.

Thanks guys. So I'm thinking I'll be alright with a 1070/i56600k/16 RAM?

I'm on Ep 3 and "pretty decent" sounds like a good descriptor for it. Solid story and presentation, good VO, with the same awful, horrible, janky TellTale engine sputtering through the entire thing.

Did you know that pausing the game makes all of the slight pauses while it's loading something even longer, on top of desyncing the audio? (It can also screw up animations) Because I just discovered this.

TellTale's engine game puts them on a trajectory to surpass Life is Strange's presentation and polish in a couple generations, at best. I don't know how they aren't raked over the coals more for it.

Like, seriously. Wadjet Eye's games have more polish, and they're using Adventure Game Studio, a freeware engine, and no doubt a much lower budget.

Telltale gets a pass since their writing VA etc is so good and it comes across they are fans of the source material. TWAU is so cool

Re: the Ori and the Blind Forest coupon, I own the original and received the coupon. However, when I go to use it, I just get any error -- something about them having issues, nothing really specific. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you're not gonna play them right away, wait. Otherwise, just buy them. They're not long at all. Oxenfree is the shorter one of the two, at no more than a handful of hours if you just rush through it without paying mind to radio frequencies and such.

LiS is a worthwhile title. I didn't enjoy Oxenfree as much, but if it's something you're interested in, these are good price points.

Pretty sure oxenfree is already in a bundle since I own it and never bought it

Oxenfree is okay but pretty short and feels like a poor mans Life is Strange to me. LiS is fantastic and so worth $5, but you're probably right that it'll be bundled in the relatively near future.

Yeah you're right I think it was right after the Halloween sale IIRC.

I bought the limited edition version of Life is Strange and have no regrets whatsoever. One of the most memorable games I've ever played. Absolutely worth it at 75% off. Oxenfree has already been bundled once. I'm sure you could find it pretty cheap on here or somewhere like G2A. Played it for about an hour and a half a few months ago, but never got around to finishing it.

Thanks for the posts. I think I'll just hold off for now. With any luck I'll be laughing my way to the bank when I get both in the same bundles a few months from now.

Those posts are trying to lead you astray :P

Oxenfree is perhaps the most innovative entry in the genre since the first Walking Dead. With Oxenfree and Life Is Strange, Night School and DontNod have usurped Telltale as the best devs in that niche. Actually Night School is composed from a bunch of former Telltale devs; the writer of Oxenfree was the lead writer on Tales from the Borderlands

Really tempted to get Watch Dogs 2 but I never finished the first. How are the set pieces in comparison to the first? I heard you can stealth/non-lethal play the majority of the game at least.

You can't use it during a sale, you'll have to wait until the sale is done to use the coupon

And with Pony Island and OneShot finished, I've wrapped up games 51 and 52 for the year. What a very interesting pair of games...

I'm seeing improvements at least, I can alt-tab now. It's a bit slow, and the Windows-key still doesn't work for quick access to the start menu.

Still locked at 60 though, but at least I can alt-tab/quit the game now.

Double check your desktops frame rate in the Nvidia control panel

My thing with Oxenfree is that it's too short to really give a hoot about the characters or the moral/dialogue choices you're expected to make, and I didn't think the gameplay was robust enough to make up for those shortcomings. It's not a bad game, but more of a tough sell when there are so many games to buy and compete for your money during this sale, *especially* when one of those games is Life is Strange.

I got Hyper Light Drifter and Ori and the Blind Forest. I hardly have any Steam games at all - what are a few "must have" titles to look out for?
Ys series
Xanadu next
Trails in the sky if u like turn based jrpgs
First 2 are action rpgs otherwise

Im pretty vocal about my dislike for oxenfree. In most cases i can see how a game can be well loved even if i dont, but with oxenfree it completely eludes me.

One guy said it was fantastic because of the incredible ability to walk while talking. really? thats a selling point?

i mean, i liked it enough to finish it, but didnt really care for the story, and walking over that island was an exercise in boredom as well.

I agree that is innovative - the dialog system is really really good. And it has a beautiful art style. I found myself sitting right in front of my TV so I could admire some of the details, especially in the characters. The writing is good as well, but the voice acting is very uneven, and unfortunately brings the game down a bit. I highly recommend it, but (I think) understand why it doesn't click for some people.

It is ~4 hours. That's plenty of time to develop story and characters and they did quite a bit of character development and backstory. I doubt longer would have been better, you're either enjoying the ride with these characters in the first hour, or it just isn't your thing.

My monitor and my TV are 2 feet apart and I am so lazy, I'm considering buying a Steam Link so I don't have to switch the HDMI cable from my PC to TV when I want to use it... A process that takes 15 seconds and requires me to get out of my desk chair.

Problem is like half of that running time is spent plodding around the game's areas which is not particularly engaging instead of talking with the others characters and developing them better.

For example I thought Firewatch's length was fine- because you spend almost the *entire* time getting to know and interacting with the other character in the game while also exploring the world.

The RE7 demo is good

you asked about a gun before...

in the same room as the creature there's a valve on a table...grab that and go to the bathroom you pass by on the way to that creature...put the valve on the pipe by the toilet then flush the toilet...the gun is in there
