Alien Covenant Trailer Released

Please explain why a well-scripted, well-acted, well-shot adult-oriented sci-fi movie that turns balls-to-the-wall horror in the second half would be hated today.

People are skeptical of this trailer for the simple reason that Prometheus had great trailers but ended up being a stupid movie.

I'm speaking to the posts complaining that it looks like a slasher, which is what every Alien movie boils down to. It seems odd to moan about something that's been a core part of the franchise since day one.

This really puts into perspective how fucking ace Prometheus' trailer was. Say what you will about that film but the trailer for Prometheus was the hypest trailer in years.
I had legit chills. Then..........my head blew up when the film came out.

I have hopes for this but to be honest. I'll pass on this. Unless reviews here on GAF change my mind.

I'm in the camp where I thought it was gorgeous, Fassbender was amazing, and despite a couple characters being idiots (it's a horror film, it happens) and Theron not being able to run sideways, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The mythology was fine with me, also.
You're in camp 1 then. Honestly I love the IP generally but I don't even really follow the mythology. Reading up on it afterwards made Prometheus even more stupid for me tho
His last Sci-Fi movie was critically acclaimed.

And I liked Prometheus.

I see no reason not to be excited about this.
His last sci-fi movie was also adapted from a book someone else wrote.

For the gamers in this thread who have any interest in the Alien saga, do yourselves a big favor and play the incredible Alien: Isolation (a very well written and made game that is canon to the series).

Dunno. Didn't really grasp much from that. Just a bunch of scenes. Shrug.

That's good. Make no mistake, it wasn't as bad as other spoiler-filled trailers at all; just felt like it would have been better to not know which of the main characters gets face hugged :[

I'm definitely in that camp haha

Awesome :D I genuinely enjoyed it very much even with all the flaws. Nothing comes close to Alien for me, of course. But Prometheus offered plenty. Curious to see if Covenant can tie up the plot in an interesting manner that makes sense.

I love Prometheus. Honestly, the only two parts of the movie I don't like are
the disc-rolling ship at the end and the way Vickers says "Father" when Weyland shows up.

All of the other things people nitpick about that flick don't bother me at all. Movie was awesome. One of my favorites.

Wow, lovely to see others with similar thoughts. The first of two flaws you mentioned in particular was indeed silly in the film. The movie was loaded was wonderful scenes and imagery. Hands down my favorite scene in the film was
Elizabeth Shaw's removal of the "egg" from her body. Intense and gruesome!

I'm in the minority that loved Prometheus, so I'm excited to see this!

Haven't watched it in a few years, I'm actually excited to see the blu ray again. Crazily enough, I recall being very excited to see it in theatres a second time back in 2012!

Where's the green band trailer at? That shit was too intense for my liking.

This is valid, Alien is a fairly typical slasher in the second half. It's just really fucking well executed.

What is it with Engineer ships? They just can't seem to stay up.

Trailer looks good, but it's meant to. Cautiously optimistic. And yes, needs more Noomi. She and Fassbender were the best things about Prometheus, losing that dynamic would be a shame.

I can see people thinking The Martian is an entertaining movie, but it was empty entertainment. Alien has a name and expectations to meet. He isn't good enough to do that kind of film again.

I'm rolling my eyes pretty hard here. You're talking about a critically acclaimed, award winning SCIENCE FICTION movie, and dismissing it as empty entertainment.

I'm sorry that Ridley having made a well liked, Oscar nominated, award winning movie doesn't fit into your narrative of 'Ridley Scott has lost it', but he did.

Prometheus had some serious script issues, and hopefully this won't. But it was gorgeous, and the performances were solid. If the script is good (and there is reason to hope it IS given that Lindeloff wasn't anywhere near it) there is no reason to think Ridley can't pull it off.

I only saw it for the first time within the last year and I giggled at some of the shots of the alien, but otherwise it's probably the scariest movie I've ever seen.

Someone on twitter is saying that the below pic is inspired by unused art for Vincent Ward's script for Alien 3.

That was incredibly underwhelming. Characters looking into an alien sac? Really?

From that it seems no lessons were learned from Prometheus.

Well, that's the thing about Ridley Scott. Phenomenal director, but his movies all live or die by the quality of their scripts. If he shot a script as good as Alien or Blade Runner every time, he would easily be in everyone's list of best directors.

He's an old ass man now, but he's still got it. Give him a good script and he'll give you a great movie. Hopefully this is that.

How do you wind up making a xenomorph going up a woman's vagoo boring as hell?
I'm guessing it ripped the dude ass to eyeballs not the woman.

They already had implied tail rape in the original. But that was mostly because they didn't have footage for her death (those are harry dean stantons legs)

Yeah, they're absolutely reusing materials from the abandoned Alien films. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a giant human/alien hybrid pop up in the final of this movie like in Eric Red's A3 script.

Vincent Ward's script had a scene where the Alien picks off members of the abbey one by one in a corn field, and it looks like this movie is gonna have something like that.

You know, I rewatched Prometheus recently, and it's actually a lot more enjoyable than people give it credit for. Are there a dozen logical oddities at play? Sure. Are some characters constantly switching between being brilliant and stupid? Oh yes. But it's a visually stunning experience, and I found the mythology stuff really fun. Ridley has such an eye for in-movie geography - I always felt I knew where characters were going, and how they were going to get there. It gave the world a real, lived-in feel.

I dunno, I get why people don't like it, but I like it. Sue me.

Yep. Prometheus is a solid film. The hate is totally overblown.

The only performances that were solid were Fassbender and Noomi. Charlize and Idris Elba are great but were terrible in the mivie.

And like I said before, the Martian was good but it was adapted from a book. The biggest issue with Prometheus is its script.

And yes, Lindelof sucks but you're underselling how much creative control Scott had on Prometheus by being naive to think that with Lindelof gone the script is going to noticeably improve.

Precisely this.

Good post right here.

Great end to the trailer.

Didn't know Jamal Lyon was in this, glad to see him getting work outside of Empire.

Prometheus trailer looked great and the movie turned out garbage.

This trailer is garbage, so maybe the movie will be great?

Thank you.

Precisely this.
The problem is Scott ok'd Prometheus' script. The Alien IP is basically his baby, he had plenty of opportunities to change the moronic things about Prometheus' writing and he didn't. In addition apparently the script here is based off his idea anyway, so we're boned.

Hmm. Trailer looks good visually, and has a few interesting snippets, but the Ripley look-a-like
which I believe is supposed to be her mother, is borderline Star Wars prequel kinda bullshit. Why the fuck does Ripley dress like her mother with a similar haircut some-40 years after the fact? If this indicative of the thinking that's gone into this, this is gonna be bad
. I remain overly cautious with very low expectations.

And nobody is coming into this expecting The Martian, they want the guy who directed classics like Alien and Blade Runner.

That guy does not exist anymore. And he absolutely could fix the script if he wanted to, but he doesn't give a shit so he will not.

Also helps I read spoilers.

Is that Spoiler a popular rumor? Lmao

Nope. Even if Ridley is blind to whether he's shooting a good script or not, there's no evidence that he fucks up a good script when he's given one.

This film, will likely live or die by its script. Not because it's directed by Ridley Scott and he's lost any talent he once had. He absolutely hasn't.

Everything people hate about slasher films were mostly present in Alien. Outside of Ripley, the rest of the crew were essentially truckers in space, devoided of character development. They all did dumb shit, there was only one enemy, the film had the "you thought it was dead, but we tricked you" end scene. It was filled with slasher tropes when you pick it apart, but still manged to be an excellent film in spite of this

I dont know why some of you are disappointed. ALIEN movies are space slasher with good bit of world building. The horror part was missing from Prometheus and this one has it.
Original Alien definitely has some slasher elements but for me it stands out against similar run-of-the-mill slasher stuff with how restrained and subtle it was. Ridley back then didn't need copious amount of blood and gore to terrified the fuck outta people - the unknown terror that was the Xenomorph did that.

Judging by these posts, if Alien was released today GAF would hate it
Eh, I don't know. Alien 1979 didn't, like, have one of the best trailers of all time or anything...

I also hope this film works for with the fanbase and commercially as I would absolutely love to see Neil Blomkamp's vision for Alien with Sigourney Weaver and Michael Beihn. Both actors hint at how amazing it'll be if it takes off. It will also retcon Alien 3, so there you have it.

Very interesting. Never thought that script would provide some sort of inspiration down the line, if at all.

It sure looks like it.

Fingers crossed they nail it.

Ok

1) he doesn't do anything to fix a shitty script

2) the alien movies that he directs are largely based on his ideas anyway

Edit:

3) he was a writer for exodus gods and kings

He's a shitty writer now with shitty ideas and it's no surprised his most acclaimed movie in years is adapted from a book.

Edit 2: yeah, he's a writer for this movie too. I'll eat some serious crow if the script is even decent.

I really hope Noomi Rapace is in this for more than a "Shaw died on her way to the Engineer planet" cameo. She was a bright spot of Prometheus.

There's nothing wrong with most slasher movie tropes other than their overuse.

And 1979 was long before those tropes were played out.

Saying people would crap on Alien today is sort of like saying people would dismiss Blade Runner today as showing a clichéd vision of the future.

Thank God they didn't spoil that much, just a reenactment of early Prometheus scenes. Holy smokes that fassbender look gave me fuckin chills. Day 1

Like Prometheus, a great trailer.

I hope this movie at the very least is fun and scary. Prometheus, while I actually like the movie, never comes off as scary, but as a fun dumb horror flick.

I liked the use of 'Nature Boy' here though. I hope David's role is substantial here. Also, Danny McBride shedding tears?

Likewise, she was very underrated and my favorite part of Prometheus. Would have even preferred her to be one of the main characters in this one. On the topic of Noome in general, haven't seen her act for some time; it's a shame as I really enjoyed her performance.

And here I thought it was Luke Skywalker.

Isn't it crazy that we're getting a new Star Wars, Alien and Blade Runner film in the same freaking year :0??? Plus Trainspotting 2, a new King Kong, a live action Beauty and the Beast, the final Wolverine Jackman film, Ghost in the Shell, Chris Nolan's Dunkirk, Marvel's new Spider Man film, the first Wonder Woman solo film, a new Planet of the Apes film, Stephen King's The Dark Tower (finally!) and Justice League? Crazy year of film coming up folks.
