Alien Covenant Trailer Released

Pretty excited for this but also pretty cautious after Prometheus let me down.

Slow covers are like the new Inception horns when it comes to trailers lately.

Nice to see Danny McBride getting a chance to play it straight. Looks like he gets to be more than comic relief from what little was shown.

Alien is one of my absolute favorite films of all time.
This trailer was pretty bad. Looks kind of cheap, as well. I hope for the best, but this doesn't look good.

It looked anything but cheap, some people will say anything negative about the film just to say something and contribute to the mass hysteria.

That looked terrible. Redundant, dumb and the trailer was VERY spoilery.

Will watch.

Aimed at Prometheus or Alien? I do think it felt very spoilery though. The "ear" shot in particular kind of spelled the entire story out.

It felt like a throwback to the 80s slashers, hehe.

Yeah Alien always felt like a really classy slasher movie. Like a sci-fi giallo, without any care about budget!

In terms of what? Blade Runner was based off of a widely loved, existential Philip K. Dick novel. Prometheus was an at best average, sci-fi slasher, at worst a travesty in screenplays.

The source material is irrelevant. Blade Runner wasn't recognized as an instant classic upon its release. Early crititcal reception was mixed at best. It didn't find its audience until people got to live with the film for years and consider its themes.

Prometheus appears to be on a similar trajectory.

I wonder why the fellow with the alien coming out of his back has such a pasty/chalk complexion.

Was his body going through shock or was he mutating into an Engineer?

Same happened with The Thing and The Shining. Seems to happen a lot with sci-fi/horror movies

You are in for a disappointment on that. I didn't even hate Prometheus, it was alright. Dumb as shit but alright.

Lmao that was a really bad trailer, I guess they took the wrong lessons from Prometheus. Trailers for that were amazing right out of the gate.

you can never take comments posted on gaf too seriously. Gaf lives in its own little bubble when it comes to this kind of stuff

There's a reason FOX and Ridley went back to the Alien branding instead of calling this movie Prometheus 2. This isn't a GAF bubble sort of thing.

This doesn't really happen anymore with the internet. I don't think it's happened since Fight Club nearly 20 years ago.

Edit:
Cloud Atlas too. One of this centuries best science fiction films, that many passed up at its release

And it's still passed up.

Well The Thing did open with Blade Runner. Which was a couple weeks after ET which did kill the damn things IMO. I wonder if The Shining got jumped like that. I don't know!

They should have gone with something closer to the Alien or Aliens trailer. No dialogue, just nightmarish sounds and visuals.

Edit: Nevermind. The Aliens trailer was not how I remembered it.

Even here you could see how cynical this whole thing is going to be, just a carbon copy of Alien. Katherine Waterson "are you sure about this? we don't know what's out there!" identical to Ripley's scenes with the captain in Alien.

It actually looked redundant to both, now that you mention it.

Scott has described Alien as a 'b-movie, done the A way', which is a good way to put it.

It's interesting that you guys bring up the sex imagery, as it's largely by design for this movie. In the IGN interview on YT, the crew of the Covenant are paired together with people they're compatible with in order to help spur the colonizing of the planet.

I liked Katherine Waterston in Inherent Vice :P

Loved that movie even though it made no goddamn sense.

She wasn't really in Inherent Vice long enough to leave an impression on me, but she was pretty terrible in Fantastic Beasts. If she sucks in this I'm gonna start wondering why she keeps getting these major roles.

The former. There's another scene where the
neomorph doesn't even burst out the back but from inside a crew member, crawls through their throat and bursts out their head.

The neomorphs are smaller creatures with spiked backs and tails that run on all fours like the dog alien from Alien 3, before they learn to stand up.

Sounds like this movie is going to be gory as fuck

Why is Michael Fassbender in everything?

Anyways, trailer looks meh. Can't be worse than anything post-Alien 2 though. That last scene in the shower though? Just terrible.

Honestly it just looks like Prometheus Again. Like... I'm not seeing where this really adds anything to the franchise. Maybe it's too early to tell, but I'm not interested at all based on this trailer.

Pros:
- good use of small scale CGI
- good cinematography
- Fassbender possibly cast as bot
- Danny McBride bringing some quality drama

Cons:
- large scale CGI dims immersion
- environments look too "crisp"
- Jason possessed alien looking to destroy romance

Prometheus reviewed well and was a success at box office so it wasn't received that badly if that what your implying. Also the story of that particular film was based around Prometheus mythology whereas this one could be different. It could simply be that they're using the alien branding because it more recognisable so it has potential to sell more plus this film is looking more like traditional alien than Prometheus edit: actually premature to say that considering how misleading marketing can be

awful trailer, and lol at the
sex kill

So, this doesn't follow the rest of the Noomi Rapace storyline from Prometheus? I mean, I know that movie wasn't great, but geez, I thought we were going to follow her to the engineer/space jockey planet.

Am disappoint.

Gotta be honest I was looking forward to Alien Girl and Robot Head's Big Adventure.
