What's your opinion of the controller? I ordered one, it arrives Friday.
I know this probably sounds like a "No duh" thing, but to be perfectly clear, it's far and away best on the couch or in a chair where using a keyboard or mouse isn't possible.
It isn't a total replacement for KB/M, but it's definitely a very good stand-in on the couch in most cases. Works well for isometric and other bird's-eye view games, and is often fantastic - a real-time game with lots of inputs like Satellite Reign can be dicey, but slower/turn-based games like Chroma Squad, Underrail and PoE work extremely well - and it's pretty much perfect for Dolphin, once you get bindings set up to your preferences. It's been perfectly fine for games with simpler controls too, i.e. 2D sidescrollers like Ori and Momodora, but I've never been a one of those d-pad fanatics, joystick's always been fine for me.
I haven't found anything I'm comfortable with for third-person games yet, though. In particular, I've spent some time with Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3, and it just hasn't clicked with me yet like the 360 controller. As a game that isn't designed with KB/M at the forefront, the gains of being able to do things like trackball-swipe a quick 180 seem overshadowed by the simplicity and directness of having a joystick instead of a trackpad under your thumb. And that's beside retraining your brain for differently spaced buttons and two additional grips.
Beyond that, there are only two things that really stick out: it's an entirely personal thing, but community bindings strike me as pretty garbage so far, so expect to be filling out a lot of your own profiles in games, and I feel like there is a bit of added bugginess to it, with games crashing in ways I haven't seen before and even Steam crashing altogether. Could be BPM as much as the Steam Controller, but for all intents and purposes, they're the same thing in that situation.
Long story short, it's great for KB/M games when you're away from the keyboard (especially slower ones), and thus really hits its full potential when you have a Steam Link to go with it. Beyond that, it ranges from "great" to "a fine swap" to "Eh, it works, but I feel like I'm adding an extra layer of burden here" depending on how fast the game plays, how complex it controls, and how familiar you are with your custom bindings.
Ohhh
Hnnngggg
That's a good call, I did just get my fill of Massive Chalice the other day so this'd be a great step up.
but $29.99 in a steam sale, gotta think that out
